Obama Eyes More Troops for Afghan War

President Barack Obama summons his war council to try to finalize a decision on Afghanistan. Military officials say they expect Obama to ask Congress to send an additional 32,000 to 35,000 troops to the war zone. The increase would include at least three Army brigades and a single, larger Marine contingent, military officials say. Troops would likely begin deploying in January.

As Thanksgiving approaches, travelers with a touch (or more) of the flu are faced with a dilemma. Do they fly, turning the plane into what one flight attendant calls a "petri dish in the sky"? Or do they get slapped with stiff cancellation fees from the airlines? A recent survey suggests 51 percent of travelers will choose to fly the germ-infested skies.

A Belgian man crashed his car in 1983 and doctors said he was in a vegetative state. But Ron Houben says he was conscious all the while -- but unable to speak or even cry out. Doubtful of the doctors' diagnosis, his mother found a physician who put her son through a PET scan that indicated he could touch and feel.

A kangaroo sleeping peacefully near a pond wasn't happy about being disturbed by a man walking his dog. Australian Chris Rickard says the irate kangaroo tried to drown his dog, a blue heeler named Rocky, and when Rickard went to help his pet, the rampaging 'roo attacked him with its hind legs, tearing gashes across his abdomen and face.

Melting Ice Sheets Boost Sea Levels

A new study says that since 2006, the melting Antarctic ice sheet has caused sea levels to rise faster than originally predicted. Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin used satellite images to track the process. "If the current trend continues or gets worse," says one researcher, "Antarctica could become the largest contributor to sea level rises in the world."
