Searchers Find Body of Missing Girl

SANFORD, N.C. (Nov. 17) — When 5-year-old Shaniya Davis of North Carolina went missing, suspicion turned to a man described as her mother's boyfriend. As he was let go, police targeted another man spotted on hotel surveillance footage holding the child. Then, authorities arrested the girl's mother and accused her of offering her daughter for prostitution.
The arrests offered a glimmer of hope Shaniya would be found alive, but searchers discovered the girl's body Monday off a rural road, nearly a week after her mother reported her missing from a mobile home park.

Hundreds of volunteers who helped look for Shaniya left the search area dejected, unable to bring her home to her father, 7-year-old brother and the dolls she so loved.
"I still feel kind of sick to my stomach," said Angela Jackson, 27, from nearby Sanford, who has a two-month-old daughter but searched for consecutive days.
Particularly disturbing were the accusations against Shaniya's mother, 25-year-old Antoinette Davis. Police charged Davis with human trafficking and felony child abuse, saying Shaniya was offered for sex.
Davis was calm and quiet during a court appearance. She provided one-word answers to the judge's questions. She requested a court-appointed attorney and did not enter a plea.
Her sister, Brenda Davis, 20, said she does not believe the charges.

"I don't believe she could hurt her children," said Brenda Davis, who spoke with her sister at the jail Sunday. Davis' aunt, Yvonne Mitchell, said the mother had two jobs and would never harm the child.
Authorities also charged Mario Andrette McNeill, 29, with kidnapping after they said surveillance footage from a Sanford hotel showed him carrying Shaniya. Authorities said McNeill admitted taking the girl, though his attorney said he will plead not guilty.
Fayetteville police spokeswoman Theresa Chance declined to talk about additional charges. She also wouldn't comment on a cause of death or the condition of Shaniya's body, except to say that state investigators planned to retrieve it about 100 feet off the road.
"Detectives have been running off adrenaline to find this little girl and to bring her home alive," Chance said. "You have a lot of people in shock right now."
Davis reported Shaniya missing from a mobile home park Tuesday. Authorities first arrested Clarence Coe, but charges against him were dropped a day later when investigators tracked down McNeill after receiving a tip from a hotel employee.
Additional information led investigators to a search site near Sanford on Sunday. They continued searching Monday, scouring miles of landscape, roads, ravines and fields on four-wheelers and with helicopters.
"We were hoping that someone could carry her home," said Syd Severe, 42, who came from Raleigh to help with the search. "It's just sick."

Missing Children Cases
Hassani Campbell: The 5-year-old Oakland, Calif., boy disappeared on Aug. 10. His foster father, Louis Ross, said Hassani vanished when he left the boy alone near his car in a shoe store parking lot for no longer than five minutes. Hassani has cerebral palsy and wears white braces on his ankles. Ross said Friday he had taken a polygraph test.

A cluster of emergency vehicles and law enforcement gathered where Shaniya's body was found. Authorities blocked access to the road, a rural area popular with hunters that is less than a mile from a lakeside community.
On Monday night, dozens of people attended a vigil at a Baptist church about two miles from where the body was found.
"We have kids and it just hit so close to home. It's unbelievable how somebody can just do something that horrible to something so precious," said organizer Crystal Godfrey, who lives a few miles from where the body was found.
Shaniya's father, Bradley Lockhart, said he raised his daughter for several years but last month decided to let her stay with her mother. He had pleaded for her safe return.
Lockhart told The Associated Press on Saturday that he and Davis never argued about him raising Shaniya, and Cumberland County courts had no record of a custody dispute. He described his relationship with Davis as a "one-night stand" and said he did not know McNeill.
Davis struggled financially over the years, but she recently got a job and her own place, so Lockhart said he decided to give her a chance with their daughter.
"I should've never let her go over there," he said Saturday night. A friend at Lockhart's home Monday afternoon said Lockhart did not want to speak with reporters.

people can do this if they don't have the love of God in there heart sin is why the father and aunt left this baby with the mother they didn't evan check the inside of the mobile home where the little girl that they so much loved was living at the last weeks of her life wanting to give the mother a second chance is not a good reason to live your child whom you love so much no way you don't think about the mother getting a second chance you think about the child needing a clean home needed to around people she's use of needed to be loved it wasn't right to take her out of her normal surroundings and putting her in a dirty home with a woman that has a bad reputation to me he and the aunt didn't want the respondsible of Shania now Shania is gone thanks to God she's not suffering she's in God's home now where she'll be well taken care of for eternity

I think everyone needs to wake up to the realization that we have alot of sick people living in our cities, we may not like it, but we need to to something about it. Prison is not an option, maybe if every tax paying citizen screams at congress to change the laws , for those that are guily of such as crime as this, death is the only answer. Why would anyone think this trash should live? If you take a life once(especially in this manner) I'm not talking about the self defense issues,I'm talking anyone who takes the life of a child should be put to death. Maybe we might see less of this crime when they know they'll die for commiting it. Not live in a cell on my tax dollars, too much of that going on also. I hope the state will be stepping in to take the child this mother is pregnant with also, or we'll see this happen again.

My stomach turned..I was got sick to my stomach to hear of this. These people are monsters with Satan as their father..jail is to good for them..don't waste taxpayers money taking them to court...give them their rights? What rights did this little precious baby have? NONE. I pray for her soul because I know she is in good hands with the Creator..these two will rot in H_LL for sure! This baby was so innocent, so pure and these rotten souls destroyed her..I am just sick to hear of this. I know the Father wished he could turn back the hands of time, however, that can't be.

Perhaps the police have a dififcult time investigating black crime because there is so much of it going on. Watch the news and you soon get the picture. A great part of the problem is that blacks tend to protect the criminal element in their community by hindering police investigations when asked to point the finger at the guilty party. It has to be terribly frustrating for a policeman when everyone at a crime scene denies seeing anything, or knowing the perpetrator of the crime When they, black and white move beyond the tendency to live in a world of denial, perhaps then, the police will be able to pursue justice for them. Does this let the white race off the hook? By no means. There are many whites, who also turn the cheek and look the other away in order to protect the criminal element in their sociey when a neighbor or a family member is involved in a crime. How about EZ Harris, the drug trafficking and aspiring politician, or the Governor, who cheated on his wife and coccocted a story explaining his absence? No one wants to assume responsibility for bad behavior, and those, who turn the cheek or defend such behavior are worse than the offender. So, is it a race problem or is it a moral problem our society is content to live with as a result of outright indifference toward criminals, and a self destructive decision to turn the cheek and protect the guilty? If you draw a glass of water and see that it is rusty in color, does that make you a rust racist when you report it if it continues to occur frequently? You see what you see, and you can't help but wonder when the issue is ignored by those who have the power to fix it-(neighborhood and community working WITH the local police dept.) Blacks and whites have the power to fix their problems. Why don't they, instead of dancing around the truth and singing the self destructive song of denial? Throwing stones is a childish and ignorant way of avoiding the truth. Peace

God knows how she suffered...I have 2 words..death penalty...enough said..and let's take the race card out of this..the mother is not worth living, no matter what color she is...that darling little girl is the victim...screw the mother!

Two more pieces of druggie ghetto s**t posing as people. How could a mother prostitute a little girl like this one? The mother should have an axe buried in her skull. Execute both of these pieces of crap. They are wasting valuable air.

A missing 5-year-old whose mother was accused of offering her for sex was found dead off a heavily wooded road in a rural area Monday, ending a weeklong search, police said. Searchers found Shaniya Davis\' body early Monday afternoon about 100 feet off a road southeast of Sanford, in central North Carolina, Fayetteville Police spokeswoman Theresa Chance said. She declined to comment on a cause of death or the condition of Shaniya\'s body.
