SANFORD, N.C. (Nov. 17) — When 5-year-old Shaniya Davis of North Carolina went missing, suspicion turned to a man described as her mother's boyfriend. As he was let go, police targeted another man spotted on hotel surveillance footage holding the child. Then, authorities arrested the girl's mother and accused her of offering her daughter for prostitution.
The arrests offered a glimmer of hope Shaniya would be found alive, but searchers discovered the girl's body Monday off a rural road, nearly a week after her mother reported her missing from a mobile home park.

Hundreds of volunteers who helped look for Shaniya left the search area dejected, unable to bring her home to her father, 7-year-old brother and the dolls she so loved.
"I still feel kind of sick to my stomach," said Angela Jackson, 27, from nearby Sanford, who has a two-month-old daughter but searched for consecutive days.
Particularly disturbing were the accusations against Shaniya's mother, 25-year-old Antoinette Davis. Police charged Davis with human trafficking and felony child abuse, saying Shaniya was offered for sex.
Davis was calm and quiet during a court appearance. She provided one-word answers to the judge's questions. She requested a court-appointed attorney and did not enter a plea.
Her sister, Brenda Davis, 20, said she does not believe the charges.

"I don't believe she could hurt her children," said Brenda Davis, who spoke with her sister at the jail Sunday. Davis' aunt, Yvonne Mitchell, said the mother had two jobs and would never harm the child.
Authorities also charged Mario Andrette McNeill, 29, with kidnapping after they said surveillance footage from a Sanford hotel showed him carrying Shaniya. Authorities said McNeill admitted taking the girl, though his attorney said he will plead not guilty.
Fayetteville police spokeswoman Theresa Chance declined to talk about additional charges. She also wouldn't comment on a cause of death or the condition of Shaniya's body, except to say that state investigators planned to retrieve it about 100 feet off the road.
"Detectives have been running off adrenaline to find this little girl and to bring her home alive," Chance said. "You have a lot of people in shock right now."
Davis reported Shaniya missing from a mobile home park Tuesday. Authorities first arrested Clarence Coe, but charges against him were dropped a day later when investigators tracked down McNeill after receiving a tip from a hotel employee.
Additional information led investigators to a search site near Sanford on Sunday. They continued searching Monday, scouring miles of landscape, roads, ravines and fields on four-wheelers and with helicopters.
"We were hoping that someone could carry her home," said Syd Severe, 42, who came from Raleigh to help with the search. "It's just sick."

Missing Children Cases
Hassani Campbell: The 5-year-old Oakland, Calif., boy disappeared on Aug. 10. His foster father, Louis Ross, said Hassani vanished when he left the boy alone near his car in a shoe store parking lot for no longer than five minutes. Hassani has cerebral palsy and wears white braces on his ankles. Ross said Friday he had taken a polygraph test.

A cluster of emergency vehicles and law enforcement gathered where Shaniya's body was found. Authorities blocked access to the road, a rural area popular with hunters that is less than a mile from a lakeside community.
On Monday night, dozens of people attended a vigil at a Baptist church about two miles from where the body was found.
"We have kids and it just hit so close to home. It's unbelievable how somebody can just do something that horrible to something so precious," said organizer Crystal Godfrey, who lives a few miles from where the body was found.
Shaniya's father, Bradley Lockhart, said he raised his daughter for several years but last month decided to let her stay with her mother. He had pleaded for her safe return.
Lockhart told The Associated Press on Saturday that he and Davis never argued about him raising Shaniya, and Cumberland County courts had no record of a custody dispute. He described his relationship with Davis as a "one-night stand" and said he did not know McNeill.
Davis struggled financially over the years, but she recently got a job and her own place, so Lockhart said he decided to give her a chance with their daughter.
"I should've never let her go over there," he said Saturday night. A friend at Lockhart's home Monday afternoon said Lockhart did not want to speak with reporters.

When will you zealots learn to leave god out of this, I don't have beliefs in god but I would never, ever harm one of my children.

People don't do bad or good because they have god in their heart, they do bad or good because of personal choices. Decisions THEY make THEMSELF.

And where did you read that the father didn't want responsiblity and never even checked the inside of the mothers home? Or is that something your god is telling you?

So, I'm not the only one who has that idea. If people were actually punished for their crimes, they would think twice before harming another human being or commiting any crime in general.

These people who go to prison get 3 meals a day, heat/ac, water, electricity and don't have to do a thing to work for it, yet I watch the people who are paying for it work 12+ hour days and can barely put food on their table.

I'm all for public executions, and no this isn't a racial thing, race in this case isn't an issue, being guilty of an atrocious crime is. Harsher punishments is a must, society needs to wake up and stop letting criminals get a free ride.

Okay everyone, here's one to get you riled up. How about public executions? Maybe if we send these pieces of sh*t a message by letting them know just what's going to happen to them by making it public, they might think twice about doing something like this. Just for the record, this is not about color. So nobody go there please. Remember John Couey? The scumbag who raped and buried Jessica Lundsford alive? He was white. He got to die in a comfortable hospital bed while being taken care of by the tax payers. Let's figure out some kind of way to make these executions a type of "pay per view" and try to get some tax money out of it? What'ya think about that folks? Ah come on, all you ACLU members, don't get your panties in a bind. Black, white, I don't care what color you are, if you hurt a child or commit any kind of horrendous or heinous crime, let the whole world watch you fry, then maybe, just maybe the next evil creep will think twice, when he or she knows what's coming next. RIP Shaniya and all the other kids out there who don't get to celebrate Christmas anymore.

What did she expect to happen? Well just drop her off when your done! What a scary scary world we live in. They need to make a special island for these people & leave them there. people can do this if they don't have the love of God in there heart sin is why the father and aunt left this baby with the mother they didn't evan check the inside of the mobile home where the little girl that they so much loved was living at the last weeks of her life wanting to give the mother a second chance is not a good reason to live your child whom you love so much no way you don't think about the mother getting a second chance you think about the child needing a clean home needed to around people she's use of needed to be loved it wasn't right to take her out of her normal surroundings and putting her in a dirty home with a woman that has a bad reputation to me he and the aunt didn't want the respondsible of Shania now Shania is gone thanks to God she's not suffering she's in God's home now where she'll be well taken care of for eternity

I think everyone needs to wake up to the realization that we have alot of sick people living in our cities, we may not like it, but we need to to something about it. Prison is not an option, maybe if every tax paying citizen screams at congress to change the laws , for those that are guily of such as crime as this, death is the only answer. Why would anyone think this trash should live? If you take a life once(especially in this manner) I'm not talking about the self defense issues,I'm talking anyone who takes the life of a child should be put to death. Maybe we might see less of this crime when they know they'll die for commiting it. Not live in a cell on my tax dollars, too much of that going on also. I hope the state will be stepping in to take the child this mother is pregnant with also, or we'll see this happen again.

A missing 5-year-old whose mother was accused of offering her for sex was found dead off a heavily wooded road in a rural area Monday, ending a weeklong search, police said. Searchers found Shaniya Davis\' body early Monday afternoon about 100 feet off a road southeast of Sanford, in central North Carolina, Fayetteville Police spokeswoman Theresa Chance said. She declined to comment on a cause of death or the condition of Shaniya\'s body.
