Knox convicted, sentenced to 26 years in Italy

PERUGIA, Italy (AP) — American college student Amanda Knox was found guilty of murdering her British roommate and sentenced to 26 years in prison early Saturday after a year-long trial that gripped Italy and drew intense media attention. Her co-defendant, former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, was convicted and sentenced to 25 years. The two also were found guilty of sexual assault in the 2007 murder of Meredith Kercher, a 21-year-old student from England.

Senate preserves long-term care program

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate on Friday turned back a Republican effort to eliminate a long-term care insurance program to help seniors and the disabled, saving the plan once championed by the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy in its health overhaul bill. But the vote exposed the difficulties Democratic leaders face in persuading their own moderates to remain united behind sweeping legislation they hope to deliver to President Barack Obama. Eleven Democrats voted with Republicans, who warned that the new program would turn into a drain on the federal budget.

Reports: Russian nightclub blast kills 101

MOSCOW (AP) — An explosion and fire apparently caused by pyrotechnics tore through a nightclub in the Russian city of Perm early Saturday, killing 101 people, according to news reports. Regional security minister Igor Orlov said the club had a suspended plastic ceiling that caught fire quickly when ignited by so-called "cold fireworks," which generally are fountain-type displays with lower temperatures than conventional fireworks, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

Va. Tech report: Staff warned their families first

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — At least two Virginia Tech administrators told family members about a double shooting in a dorm — the prelude to the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history — well before the rest of the campus was notified a gunman was on the loose. Those details were revealed in a revised state report released Friday and prompted bitter reactions from some victims' relatives who have been demanding the resignation of President Charles Steger ever since the 2007 massacre that left 33 people dead.

George Washington, Poe auction records set in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) — A letter by George Washington has sold for $3,218,500 at auction in New York City, setting a world record for a letter by America's first president, according to Christie's. Washington's 1787 letter to nephew Bushrod Washington argues for the ratification of the newly drafted Constitution.

Unexpected drop in jobless rate sparks optimism

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two years of steep job cuts all but ended last month, unexpectedly pulling down the unemployment rate and raising hopes for a lasting economic recovery. Federal figures released Friday showed that the rate fell from 10.2 percent in October to 10 percent as employers shed the fewest number of jobs since the recession began two years ago. The government also said far fewer jobs were lost in September and October than first reported.

US Marines launch offensive in Afghanistan

KABUL (AP) — U.S. Marines swooped down behind Taliban lines in helicopters and Osprey aircraft Friday in the first offensive since President Barack Obama announced an American troop surge. About 1,000 Marines and 150 Afghan troops were taking part in "Operation Cobra's Anger" in a bid to disrupt Taliban supply and communications lines in the Now Zad Valley of Helmand province in southern Afghanistan, the scene of heavy fighting last summer, according to Marine spokesman Maj. William Pelletier.

Obama shifts Copenhagen visit to boost deal

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama on Friday abruptly altered the timing of his upcoming appearance at an international climate summit in Copenhagen, hoping to capitalize on steps by India and China and build a more meaningful political accord, the White House said. The move means Obama will be at the summit on Dec. 18, considered a crucial period when more leaders will be in attendance, as opposed to his scheduled stop in Denmark on Wednesday on his way to Nobel Peace Prize events in Oslo.

Obama's stylish aide is under withering scrutiny

She arrived in Washington with more of a splash than any White House social secretary before her, and no wonder: Desiree Rogers had obvious style, wealth, a Harvard MBA, years of corporate experience, and friends at the top, most importantly Barack and Michelle Obama. She defined her goal as nothing less than bringing life to the Obama presidency. And she pulled off a series of innovative, high-wattage events that seemed to be doing just that. She even got the nation's governors to dance in a conga line.

Nets get 1st win, end 18-game skid to open season

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Players hugged at center court. Fans stood and cheered as music blared through the arena. Finally, the New Jersey Nets got to experience that winning feeling again.

Eight day trip is costing at least One Million a day and our President Obama says it was worth it, than i suggest he pay for it because as the Tax Payers are being told we must cut back. This President must be smoking Wacky-Tobacco and drinking his own Kool-Aid he does not make any sense. Correction Election Sarah Palin 2010-2012.
