Fierce winter storm hits Midwest with snow, wind
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A fierce winter storm hammered more than a dozen states Tuesday with dangerous ice, heavy snow and vicious winds that threatened to create 15-foot drifts in parts of the Upper Midwest. As much as two-thirds of the country will be affected by the storm by the time it moves off the Maine coast Thursday night, said Jim Lee, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Des Moines.

4 slain Wash. officers honored at memorial
TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — About 20,000 mourners, mostly members of law enforcement from Washington state and across the country, honored four slain officers who were remembered Tuesday as heroes and loving family members. A procession of 2,000 cars followed the flag-draped caskets of Sgt. Mark Renninger and Officers Ronald Owens, Tina Griswold, and Greg Richards to the Tacoma Dome, where the memorial service was held. Several candlelight vigils have been held for the officers since the shooting on Nov. 29, but Tuesday's memorial service and procession are believed to be the largest in state history.
Ohio executes inmate with one-drug injection
LUCASVILLE, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio killer was put to death in an efficient 10 minutes Tuesday in the first U.S. execution to use a single drug injection instead of the standard three-chemical combination that has come under legal attack because it can cause excruciating pain. Kenneth Biros, 51, was pronounced dead shortly after one dose of sodium thiopental began flowing into his veins at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. The U.S. Supreme Court had rejected his final appeal two hours earlier.
Woods' mother-in-law released from Fla. hospital
OCOEE, Fla. (AP) — Tiger Woods' mother-in-law collapsed at his home and was rushed to a hospital early Tuesday, touching off the second media frenzy in two weeks surrounding the pro golfer's carefully guarded private life. Barbro Holmberg was taken by ambulance to Health Central Hospital with stomach pains after a 911 call from Woods' house. Holmberg, a Swedish politician, was released about 11 hours later and returned to Woods' mansion, hospital spokesman Dan Yates said.
Student opens fire in Va. classroom; no injuries
WOODBRIDGE, Va. (AP) — A 20-year-old student opened fire in a community college classroom, but did not hit anyone and was arrested in a hallway, police said Tuesday. No injuries were reported following the afternoon shooting at Northern Virginia Community College's campus in Woodbridge, about 25 miles south of Washington, D.C.
Sen. Brown wins GOP primary, Coakley tops Dems
BOSTON (AP) — Two veteran state politicians won their parties' nominations Tuesday amid light turnout that followed a low-key campaign to fill the high-profile Senate seat held by the late Edward M. Kennedy. Attorney General Martha Coakley won a four-way race for the Democratic nomination, while state Sen. Scott Brown bested a perennial candidate to win the Republican nomination. They will go head-to-head in the Jan. 19 special election.
Episcopal lesbian bishop calls election liberating
NEW YORK (AP) — The lesbian priest who was elected assistant bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles said Tuesday that she was upset by claims that her role in the church is divisive. The Rev. Mary Glasspool said that she was aware her win troubles some people, but that she believes her election last weekend was mostly "liberating" for the denomination.
Doctor shot to death at rural Ky. medical clinic
CORNETTSVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A "disgruntled patient" shot his doctor to death Tuesday at a rural southeastern Kentucky health clinic in what might have been a dispute over prescription pills, officials said. John Combs, 46, is charged with murder in the slaying of Dr. Dennis Sandlin, said Kentucky State Police Trooper Tony Watts. Combs had been a patient of Sandlin's earlier in the day, returned with a gun and fired at the 57-year-old doctor, Watts said.
Senator: Va. medal winner can keep his flagpole
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A 90-year-old Medal of Honor winner can keep his 21-foot flagpole in his front yard after a homeowner's association dropped its request to remove it, a spokesman for Democratic Virginia Sen. Mark Warner said Tuesday. The Sussex Square homeowners' association likewise has agreed to drop threats to take legal action against retired Army Col. Van T. Barfoot, Warner spokesman Kevin Hall said.
