Ohio executes inmate with one-drug injection
LUCASVILLE, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio killer was put to death in an efficient 10 minutes Tuesday in the first U.S. execution to use a single drug injection instead of the standard three-chemical combination that has come under legal attack because it can cause excruciating pain. Kenneth Biros, 51, was pronounced dead shortly after one dose of sodium thiopental began flowing into his veins at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. The U.S. Supreme Court had rejected his final appeal two hours earlier.
Accused terrorist bridged two different worlds
CHICAGO (AP) — Part American and part Pakistani, the Chicago man accused of conspiring in the bloody terrorist attacks in Mumbai has followed a twisted trail through two different worlds. David Coleman Headley grew up in two countries and ended up with two names. A troubled young man, he dropped out of school, was convicted of heroin smuggling and ended up broke and jobless.
'Upset student' opens fire in class; no injuries
WOODBRIDGE, Va. (AP) — Authorities say an "upset student" is in custody after pointing a rifle at a teacher and firing shots in a classroom at a community college in Virginia. No injuries are reported. The shooting happened Tuesday afternoon at Northern Virginia Community College's campus in Woodbridge, about 25 miles south of Washington, D.C.
Fierce winter storm hits Midwest with snow, wind
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A fierce winter storm hammered more than a dozen states Tuesday with dangerous ice, heavy snow and vicious winds that threatened to create 15-foot drifts in parts of the Upper Midwest. As much as two-thirds of the country will be affected by the storm by the time it moves off the Maine coast Thursday night, said Jim Lee, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Des Moines.
4 slain Wash. officers honored at memorial
TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — A procession of 2,000 cars followed the flag-draped caskets of four slain police officers to a memorial service Tuesday as thousands of mourners, mostly members of law enforcement from across the country, lined the streets. Lori Lightfoot, a police detective from Fresno, Calif., was among officers who traveled from as far away as New York, Chicago and Canada to remember Sgt. Mark Renninger and Officers Ronald Owens, Tina Griswold, and Greg Richards.
Woods' mother-in-law released from Fla. hospital
OCOEE, Fla. (AP) — Tiger Woods' mother-in-law collapsed at his home and was rushed to a hospital early Tuesday, touching off the second media frenzy in two weeks surrounding the pro golfer's carefully guarded private life. Barbro Holmberg was taken by ambulance to Health Central Hospital with stomach pains after a 911 call from Woods' house. Holmberg, a Swedish politician, was released about 11 hours later and returned to Woods' mansion, hospital spokesman Dan Yates said.
Light turnout as Mass. works to fill Kennedy seat
BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts had a light turnout for party primaries Tuesday as voters took the first step to fill the U.S. Senate seat held for nearly a half century by Edward M. Kennedy. Four Democrats, from political insiders to newcomers, and two Republicans were competing for their respective party nomination in the quick campaign to succeed Kennedy. He died of brain cancer in late August at age 77 after holding his seat since 1962. The primary winners will face off in a general election on Jan. 19.
Episcopal lesbian bishop calls election liberating
NEW YORK (AP) — The lesbian priest who was elected assistant bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles said Tuesday that she was upset by claims that her role in the church is divisive. The Rev. Mary Glasspool said that she was aware her win troubles some people, but that she believes her election last weekend was mostly "liberating" for the denomination.
Conn. ex-cop acquitted of manslaughter, assault
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A white retired police officer was acquitted Tuesday of manslaughter and assault for shooting two unarmed black men, angering the victims' families and prompting a call for peace from the city's mayor. An all-white Hartford Superior Court jury deliberated for several days before returning the verdict in favor of Robert Lawlor, who killed 18-year-old Jashon Bryant and injured 21-year-old Brandon Henry in 2005.
Doctor shot to death at rural Ky. medical clinic
HAZARD, Ky. (AP) — Police say a doctor in eastern Kentucky has been shot to death at a medical clinic and a man has been taken into custody. Kentucky State Police Trooper Tony Watts said Dr. Dennis Sandlin was killed about 11:40 a.m. Tuesday at the Leatherwood-Blackey Medical Clinic in Perry County, in southeastern Kentucky.
