Arizona Senate OKs Allowing Guns in Bars

PHOENIX (July 1) -- The Arizona Senate has given final approval to a bill that would allow people with concealed weapons permits to carry a gun into a business that serves alcohol.

The move completes legislative action on the bill and sends it to Gov. Jan Brewer. She has not said whether she will sign it, but she has long been a supporter of gun rights.
The measure has pitted powerful groups representing gun and bar owners against each other, sparking a debate about whether guns and alcohol can coexist without bloodshed.
Critics of the measure say guns and alcohol are a dangerous combination. Supporters say they should be able to protect themselves and their families even if they happen to be inside a business serving alcohol.
The measure would ban drinking while packing and allow restaurants to deny entry to gun-toting citizens by posting a sign next to their liquor license.
The bill initially required that a bar serving alcohol also serve food, but that provision was removed at the request of bar owners who worried about uncertainty over which bars have kitchens.
Forty other states have approved similar measures, according to the National Rifle Association.
Former Gov. Janet Napolitano vetoed a similar bill earlier this decade that would not have required people to have concealed weapons permits in order to carry guns in bars.
More than 127,000 Arizonans have concealed weapons permits, which require a gun safety course and background check, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

DavClbrs said, "The right to bear arms is a right each US citizen has, unless prevented by exemptions. What is really absent here is the fact that anyone who is going to consume alcohol, should not be carrying a firearm. The right to bear arms also means common sense as it releates to handgun safety. Just look at how many times fights break out in bars and the cops have to be called. Now add in a firearm in the hands of someone who has been drinking and what do you have?" . . . . . You have a criminal. The law specifically says the legal gun-toter cannot drink. So the difference is, under current law, only criminals carrying guns illegally will have them in bars, and they'll be drinking. Under the new law, gun-owners who are licensed to carry will also be in that bar, but, will not be drinking. What better way to make law-abiding patrons safer?

well first off the law is written that you can bring in your gun if you are NOT going to drink, it is also only for bars that serve food. Here in Michigan it has been that way for years, some of the corner bars are the best place to go for dinner as they serve the best food around. I personally don't drink never liked the taste of alchol but I do like the food in the local bar, why should I have to go home to lay away my weapon just to go back out to get dinner? second it's the crimminals you have to worry about having guns. the people who go through the training and pay for the permit are honest citizens who are absolutly NO threat to you. these are the same people who may one day SAVE YOUR LIFE if they see you being attacked.

Look at where all of the violence occurs....all of the areas that do not allow concealed guns, the criminals know this. If criminals had to think about if someone had a concealed weapon or not i bet they would not be so quick to take the risk. just a thought....

as for my two cents.. whoever ruled in favor of this is a MORON and they will regret that decision if it is their own family member who was an innocent victim in a bar shooting. (although i pray to god that doesnt happen- dont get me wrong)

Soo..you can't smoke in a bar-or within 25 ft of it-but you can carry a gun in one. Makes alot of sense. Don't get me wrong-I'm in favor of the Senate's decision. I'm just sitting here thinking that the AZ government is worried about killing people with cigarette smoke but not guns. Hmmm.
