FINDLAY, Ohio (May 8) - A student at a fundamentalist Baptist school that forbids dancing, rock music, hand-holding and kissing will be suspended if he takes his girlfriend to her public high school prom, his principal said.
Despite the warning, 17-year-old Tyler Frost, who has never been to a dance before, said he plans to attend Findlay High School's prom Saturday.

Frost, a senior at Heritage Christian School in northwest Ohio, agreed to the school's rules when he signed a statement of cooperation at the beginning of the year, principal Tim England said.
The teen, who is scheduled to receive his diploma May 24, would be suspended from classes and receive an "incomplete" on remaining assignments, England said. Frost also would not be permitted to attend graduation but would get a diploma once he completes final exams. If Frost is involved with alcohol or sex at the prom, he will be expelled, England said.
Frost's stepfather Stephan Johnson said the school's rules should not apply outside the classroom.
"He deserves to wear that cap and gown," Johnson said.
Frost said he thought he had handled the situation properly. Findlay requires students from other schools attending the prom to get a signature from their principal, which Frost did.
"I expected a short lecture about making the right decisions and not doing something stupid," Frost said. "I thought I would get his signature and that would be the end."
England acknowledged signing the form but warned Frost there would be consequences if he attended the dance. England then took the issue to a school committee made up of church members, who decided to threaten Frost with suspension.
"In life, we constantly make decisions whether we are going to please self or please God. (Frost) chose one path, and the school committee chose the other," England said.
The handbook for the 84-student Christian school says rock music "is part of the counterculture which seeks to implant seeds of rebellion in young people's hearts and minds."
England said Frost's family should not be surprised by the school's position.
"For the parents to claim any injustice regarding this issue is at best forgetful and at worst disingenuous," he said. "It is our hope that the student and his parents will abide by the policies they have already agreed to."
The principal at Findlay High School, whose graduates include Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, said he respects, but does not agree with, Heritage Christian School's view of prom.
"I don't see (dancing and rock music) as immoral acts," Craig Kupferberg said.

That is completely ridiculous. Why would the principal sign the form and then tell him there would be consequences? That was stupid. He shouldn't be suspended for the simple fact that the principal signed the form. Because if the principal knew it was against the rules for him to go he shouldn't have signed the form.

you cant sign the paper, giving your permission for him to go, knowing full well that he plans on going, and THEN, deciding what punishment to threaten him with. And so what if the kid danced and listened to music? the Bible says nothing about it being wrong to hold hands. he has a right to do anything he wants outside of that school as long as it is legal. a school can not have the right to enforce rules outside of school. and how many of their students have danced or listened to "rock and roll" music without the school finding out? you go shopping and they are playing that kind of music over the load speaker. Why is this kid being punished for being normal

Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, may I remind you that the Bible is full of music and dancing. Please open your bibles to Psalm 150, or anything referencing King David "dancing before the Lord". If you have "trained up the child in the way he should go, [then he] won't depart from it!". Did people at MY prom have sex ... probably. Did I? NO! Because of my Christian beliefs, I enjoyed the company of a beautiful young lady and danced to the popular music of the day (1979). MAYBE by going to the "den of iniquity" (the prom), this fine, upstanding Christian young man can be an example to those around him who might be otherwise tempted to fall into sin. Pray for the youth of America and let 'em dance!

JPearlD1 SAYS:"..This is not a matter to be demolished by PUBLIC opinion. It is a PRIVATE school and has the right to enforce its own rules based on its foundations. Get a clue people...." BULLHOCKEY! Whether you are running a private school, factory, apartment complex or any other business that sells a product or service to the general public, you cannot deny services to individuals for not following your religious beliefs. That is discrimination, and its against federal laws. I hope Tyler joined this school specifically for this reason, and for taking them down through the courts. These religious fanatics think they are above the law, and can do whatever they please. WRONG! I hope Tyler gets a team of lawyers and sues this throwback to the dark ages into obliivion.

the school and everyone else here saying that prom is all about sex is stupid if a guy has to take a girl to prom to get sex then he is a loser..most guys and girls are having sex long before and again after prom night ..it may happen afterward yes..but seriously i would think that the school would realize he kids are safer spending their time chaperoned in a school dance than in a bedroom dancing under the covers.the senior year is the best year of a students life..these kids are all going to go their seperate ways and are proud of their accomplishments for most students this is their way of celebrating together ..some have been friends 12 -13 years and wont be seeing each other again for along time while off to college...tyler wanted to be part of his girls special accomplishments and celebration.whether it involves sex or not..why degrade it..

I find it really sad that in our country there are still religions that forbid such innocent joys as listening to music, dancing and holding hands. We are in modern times here people, a whole LOT more educated and aware of the limitations age has. On top of that, the rules for schools is when the kids ARE in school or attending the functions provided BY the school. Trying to state that a child or young adult has to follow what a school says OUTSIDE of that school is repressive to the point that maybe they are even brainwashing the kids...I'd look further into what this school is actually teaching.I also know that if a child of MINE were attending this school and something like my child wanting to hold someone elses' hand is NOT their jurisdiction and I'd be quickly removing my child from that school.
