NEW YORK (April 20) - A rare, 7.03-carat blue diamond, expected to bring up to $8.5 million at auction, is on display in New York.

On Monday, Sotheby's New York previewed the vivid blue diamond, which is slightly smaller than a dime and shaped like a cushion. It will be sold in Geneva on May 12.
The conditions that are required to form a colored diamond seldom occur in nature, making them extremely rare. Sotheby's said the gem was also notable for its clarity.
The diamond was unearthed last year in the Cullinan diamond mine, northeast of Pretoria, South Africa. The stone was cut from a 26.58-carat diamond in the rough.

Over the weekend I had went to southwestern Arkansas at a place called Crater of Diamonds State Park. It is the only place in North America where you can dig for diamonds and keep any that you find for a fee of $7 a day for adults. I got all muddy and wet as a storm rolled through and no one from our group actually found a diamond. But all it takes is one to hit the lottery. It was a fun road trip, but too bad we didn't find something like that blue diamond shown above. And for those complaining about children being injured or killed mining diamonds, look around your house. Your shoes, clothing, electronics, furniture, etc. may have all been made by children in overseas "factories," sweatshops, or other facilities that their country calls a business.

its a shame that people make so much of a big deal over diamonds that they have to have them or how much they cost. our brothers and sisters over there in the Motherland are dying in these coal mines, make little or no profit from their tedious efforts and we want to complain about everything. i have a better respect them because they really do seem to enjoy life's simplest elements; even if its in meager amounts or in harsh conditions. just like that one picture, the Black Queen has more luster and durability than the diamond she holds.

To VolksrodRKT===========I am not a jeweler but a fancier and collector of colored stones. In this picture the color of the blue diamond looks more like a swiss blue topaz to me. Also wonder why they didn't cut it into a round brilliant which would give it more pop. Guess to save the weight and cut it into a cushion cut. Guess what I think doesn't matter. Hope they get what they want for it but think that $8M is really high too.

I see whoever didn't like my post, didn't like the truth!!! Well you need to read the facts. You obviously don't care that innocent children die for those diamonds you so desperately want to show your status quo in society. You people are disgusting.

Conflict-free stones are available - there are diamond mines in Canada. They produce beautiful diamonds and are reasonably priced. DeBeers has no connection to them, so you won't be supporting the mess they have made of South Africa.......check them out. http://www.brilliantearth.com/

A beautiful Diamond. I wouldn't waste 8 million on it though. My husband has a .50 carat natural blue diamond on his finger. Perfect clarity.. no flaws. I paid 2200 for the ring and diamond. I see no need to be greedy and spend a huge amount of money for something thats not even set in something. Who's to say it wouldn't disintegrate once set?

Anyone who obssesses over a diamond is a sick person. Do you realize how many children die in Africa for those stupid rocks. Get over your need to show the world how much better you are and start realizing that innocent children have probably died over the stupid rock that sits on your hand or around your neck.

I think it is beautiful but you can't see the sparkle of the diamond from the picture. I have a $12,000 diamond engagement ring sitting in a lock box at the bank for the last 7 years. Diamond's may be forever, unfortunately husband's aren't. I agree in the scheme of things it is only a piece of overrated carbon.
