ADELAIDE, Australia (July 19) - A British teenager who was found dehydrated and freezing after 12 wintry days lost in Australia's wilderness said he wrote farewell notes to his family and expected to die of starvation.
Jamie Neale, 19, told Australia's "60 Minutes" television program Sunday that he was "a total idiot" to venture unprepared into the Blue Mountains, 60 miles west of Sydney.

"In the U.K., you can walk for a day and you'd end up in a pub," Neale said. "Out here, you can get lost so easily. You should respect the fact, be more prepared and think about what you are doing a lot more."
Neale said he set off for a hike on July 3 with only two bread rolls and a small bottle of water. He wore light clothing, did not carry his cell phone or a safety beacon and told no one where he was headed.
"I had overconfidence and I didn't respect the seriousness of the situation, and I made mistakes," Neale acknowledged to the program, which paid him $160,600 for his story.
Temperatures in the Blue Mountains were about 55 Fahrenheit during the day and fell to nearly 32 F at night while Neale was lost.
"It got really, really cold. My feet were burning," Neale said on camera as he walked with a reporter through the thick trees and plants in the area where he was lost. "(I was) trying to move my toes because I was scared that I might get something like trench foot or gangrene. Then, where it was also moist I kept getting attacked by the leeches."
He said he ate seeds and weeds, and kept warm at night under strips of bark. He waved his blue shirt at circling helicopters, but the forest was so thick that he was not seen. One day, he fell into a stream and then pushed on in wet clothing. On the day he realized he was walking in circles, he began to fear he would never be rescued.
"The lowest thing that I thought was going to happen would be that I would starve to death, which is something I really didn't want to happen," Neale said. "I didn't want a long, drawn-out thing and that did terrify me."
He had a notebook with him and began to write farewell letters to his family.
"(I) had actually written some goodbye notes and things to family saying, my last walk, saying sorry, explaining how I'd got lost and different things like that," Neale said.
Two hikers happened upon Neale last Wednesday. He spent two days in the hospital for treatment of dehydration and exposure. Doctors said his lungs were not in good enough condition for him to fly home, and he plans to spend a few weeks with family in Perth.
Neale and his father, Richard Cass, threw a party for rescue workers when he was released from the hospital on Friday. Cass has said that any money earned would be donated to the searchers.
"The Blue Mountain rescue service — we'll be in touch with them," Cass told reporters before he flew back to England on Friday.

hey hippie: u simply identify with this slackard. you must believe in evoulution? then you all would belong in the "darwin group" who would not survive...even the kid who got separated fromhis family and got lost here watched survivorman and applied the lessons learned and survived. this guy should pay back the rescue services with the money he got for the story.Oh lets go out into the Australian wilderness totally unprepared...duh! many American men and women are OUTDOORSMEN who KNOW how to survive and remain PREPARED for eventualities and contingencies. even the kid knew to find a water feature and try to follow it: get to high ground and survey where you are, going into the wilderness? carry a firestarter or at least have knowledge how to start one, try to keep clothes dry etc, TELL PEOPLE WHERE YOU ARE GOING AND YOUR ITENIRARY.....COMMON SENSE....guess you people have none...and you don't believe in GOD....please....

He gets paid how much? You must be kidding. He should give the money to the rescue squads that spent big bucks looking for him. Moron.

As one that has hiked and backpacked for many years in several mountain rangers, he is an idiot. You never go alone you leave a message of where you are going and when you will be back. He is one lucky person to have surived. Anyone want to buy some of my hiking story for $160,000??? I thought not! I know how to do it right and have a great time. Got me some fantasic photos!!

Wow Mother nature can be tranquil but swallow you up if your not cautious. I guess this guy learned his lesson but as the boyscout moto says come prepared he decided not to. Walking around out their in the woods or what ever you might be doing you should prepare if you get stranded and cant get out for a few days. Water shelter and something to eat helps. Maybe this man needs to take a wilderness survival course next time before he ventures out on anymore excursions. It cost alot of money to send a rescue team to get you here if you get lost in the cascade mountains of wa state and who pays for that your family gets charged and its not cheap and not free. Plus your endangering the lives of others trying to find your dumb ass.

What he's paid for his story probably won't even cover the cost of the hospitalization, search and rescue and his father's trip to look for him.

I think his honesty is admirable he truly didnt realize it was so undeveloped and when rescued was grateful and contrite. Im glad he is ok and It does take a real man to admit when he is wrong. all those jerks out there that like to preen and talk about how manly they are and "i could do it you *****" are just little boys its about time the world saw more guys that can admit their wrongs and limitations and appreciate help when it is given

My opiotion of hikers is that they are All idiots. If you want to go hiking then go in a grouo with a stable leader who knows his way arund and how to survive. any onne who goes out with 2 buns and justwater iis a complete foof and expects a rescue team to gofind him. Tha tis moneythat couls be used for the poor and ill children. I feel if you cannot afford a back up rescue team should not go hiking, no matter how much they might love the out doors. A certain responsibilty goes with this. Period and out tax money is not it. No plan. No hike. .

Self deprocation is the English way! It's just great he is ok and hopefully now he can learn from his mistake. He was lucky and now he will value his life a little more. The part of the story I liked the most was the donation of the money earned to local rescue services. This shows real gratitude, I expect all his parents wanted was to see their son again and these guys have made it happen! Bravo!
