Chaiten Volcano Erupts in Chile

SANTIAGO, Chile (Feb. 20) - More than 150 people who had returned to a Chilean town destroyed by a volcanic eruption last year were evacuated again on Thursday as the volcano roared back to life, spewing ash high into the air.
The explosion apparently rocked the dome of the Chaiten volcano and sent volcanic material down the mountain's slope, threatening to block a river and trigger flooding, said Paula Narvaez, a presidential delegate to the area in southern Chile.

Blowing Their Tops
This photo, taken June 12 from the International Space Station, shows a volcanic eruption in its earliest stage. The volcano is Russia's Sarychev Peak on Matua Island in the Kuril Islands, northeast of Japan. The main plume appears to be a mixture of brown ash and white steam, NASA said. Experts who flew over the volcano reported "large emanation of gas" on Thursday and said the situation is risky for the nearby seaside town of Chaiten because rains could trigger avalanches.
"The experts were unanimous in considering that no one must remain in Chaiten," Chile's Emergency Bureau said in a communique.
Narvaez said that as many as 160 people were evacuated from the vicinity of the 2,700-foot volcano.
More than 4,000 people were initially evacuated after Chaiten erupted on May 2 for the first time in an estimated 9,000 years.

On Thursday, increased seismic activity was reported and ash fell 100 miles away in Futaleufu.
Some residents of Chaiten, six miles from the like-named volcano, have strongly resisted government efforts to relocate them to a new settlement following the devastating eruption last year.
Residents opposed to the move in recent weeks staged protests in the town's ruins, amid houses buried under ash and volcanic mudflows.
Narvaez said the situation on Thursday "was exactly the kind of danger we were talking about when we decided to relocate Chaiten."
The relocation site has yet to be determined.

Thorrsman 10:13 PMFeb 21 2009 DKandMP Keep in mind the nature of Christians. They BELIEVE that prayer helps. I can tell you, it doesn't HURT a bit. Lots of folks who know that I am a good, practicing, Born-again Pagan say that they'll pray for me, and it never did me a bit of harm. Didn't effect my beliefs a wit, either. Take the offer with good grace@@@@ Thors, it is the attitude of some of the "Christians" that I have the problem with. They can pray all they want, and believe what they want. It's when they start telling everyone else who doesn't share their beliefs, that they are wrong. Such as this particular one who told me that she was going to pray for me as I really need it. Like there's something wrong with me. It's that holier-than-thou attitude that gets me. I'm all live and let live, if these "christians" learned to do that they'd get a lot more respect.

Wow...there's like 3 pages of debate over religion and no comments about the actual volcano, or anything even remotely close. Well if you can't beat them, might as well join them...So here's my fav quote by my fav author regarding "God." The argument goes something like this: "I refuse to prove that I exist," says God, "for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing." "But," says Man, "humans are a dead giveaway aren't they? They could not have evolved by chance. It proves that You exist, and so therefore, by Your own arguments, You don't. QED" "Oh dear," says God, "I hadn't thought of that," and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic.

Husted999 06:28 PMFeb 20 2009 Global Warming, Y2K and Big Foot are the three big lies. 45 years ago when I was in high school the percent of O in the air was 21.121%, today it is the exact same number. I remember asking my chemistry teacher about more people putting out CO2, and he said the more out there the more the plants use and the faster they grow, it is a balance. Did you ever wonder with all the ice caps melting the shore line is the same as it was in 1932, look at the marks on the piers.XXXXXX Husted, your sense of science is astounding. I assume your chem teacher was competent at teaching and your take on the subject reflects your incompetence in listening. Sure, plandt do grow faster with more CO2 to ues, but it's not anywhere near a balance. The oil and coal we burn represents hundreds of billions of tons of ancient plants turned to coal and oil. We are not adding plants back into our enfironment, we are depleting them. The balance is entirely negative; CO2 levels rise...

PrometheusSin 1:44 AMFeb 21 Uhhhh, Wildwudy, where did you come up with 7.5 billion years? ############# More like 13.5 B, right? I had in mind the unprecedented recent observation of a burst that occurred 7.5 billion light years away. That made quite an impression on me.

MrngStr05, I'm capable of making a distinction between thinking Christians and the mean "Christians" with bricks for brains. I just get so frustrated with those who can't see what God -- or our Supreme Being -- has been up to for 7.5 billion years, and refuse to accept the tools and knowledge acquired to begin to understand the whole picture. There are those who literally believe that science should be ignored and accept ONLY what Genesis says, despite its overwhelming, outrageous contradictions with the obvious truth.

Wildwudy 12:13 AMFeb 21 2009 Nothing more disgusting than a self pompous "Christian" saying "I'll pray for you". Translated: "You &^#%$. God is on my side you ^#%%#@ and you're evil". And the "Christian" says "But God loves you and I love you." Translation: "You ^#%#, you're going to hell". And a "Christian" knows I'm right. I was raised in a fundamentalist Church, and I know the unwritten language perfectly. WOW!!! Doesn't it get tiring carry around all that baggage for so many years??? Look at all the nice people you might never get to know because of your prejudice. Being a pompos a** isn't reserved for Christians and if you look in the mirror you will see what I am talking about. You really should peel the layers of prejudice that has engulfed you for way to long. If a good person says that and means it, look what you have done to yourself and the sh*t splattered on your loved ones because of your prejudice.

MrngStr05 12:27 AMFeb 21 Wildwudy======= ..... I mean think about the flood, God did make provisions for continuance of all creatures even when he was pi**ed off. God promised not to do that again, because anger destroyed all he created instead of the only the bad ones who deserved it. ######## Ah. The flood. Actually, there were many floods in the area after the Ice Age. Take a look at Google Earth and the continental shelfs. Ice caps removed much of the sea, exposing the sides of the continental shelfs. End of ice age, Atlantic flooded western 1/2 of Med Sea, then east 1/2. Then the civilization in dry Black Sea bottom flooded more recently. THOSE are the legends of The Flood, with tale of a real criminal building a boat to escape creditors.
