LAKELAND, Fla. (May 5) -- A 13-year-old boy who watched his father kill his stepmother and two younger brothers before aiming the rifle at him is helping investigators reconstruct what happened in their Florida home.
The teen was staying with his grandparents Monday, a day after investigators said his father, Troy Ryan Bellar, 34, shot and killed his wife, Wendy Bellar, 31, and then their 5-month-old and 8-year-old sons following an argument.

Bellar then chased his oldest son, Nathan, through the home's cluttered garage and took aim, but tripped on a bicycle before he could get off another fatal shot. As Nathan ran screaming to the safety of a neighbor's house, his father killed himself in the front lawn.
Detectives praised the surviving teen for being helpful and answering their questions despite the horror he witnessed.
"His entire family is gone," said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, who said the teenager cried some and was very quiet. "What he witnessed, what he was engaged in, most people in this world will never witness."

His father and stepmother had fought before, but Nathan Bellar told investigators he had no reason to believe their latest exchange would turn violent.
But then Wendy Bellar carried 5-month-old Zack James Bellar out the front door in a car seat when her husband followed them with a 7.62 mm rifle, the sheriff said. She intended to take the infant and 8-year-old Ryan Patrick Bellar to her in-laws for the night but was shot down on the screen porch.
Investigators said they had not found any suicide note, and a motive remained unclear for the killings in Lakeland, between Tampa and Orlando.
"They argued a little bit, but nothing significant," Judd said.
It wasn't the first argument for the couple who'd been married for a 10 years. According to an arrest affidavit, Troy Bellar accused his wife of hitting, punching and scratching him in March. Wendy Bellar was arrested on suspicion of domestic battery, and the case was pending.
After Nathan safely reached a home nearby, a neighbor relayed information from him to a 911 dispatcher.

"A boy's here at my house that lives there and says that his dad shot his mom and there's a baby there," the neighbor, who was not identified, told a 911 operator.
Deputies arrived at a horrific scene: Wendy Bellar and her two young sons dead from gunshot wounds in their screened-in porch and their father lifeless in the front yard. A preliminary investigation indicates that more than 10 rounds were fired in all.
Investigators say Troy Bellar ran a home remodeling and handyman business, which next-door neighbor Doug Lane said seemed to do a steady business despite the economic downturn.
Judd couldn't say if the family was experiencing any financial difficulties.
Records show the husband had been arrested twice in the county, on suspicion of armed robbery and aggravated battery in 1994 and for driving under the influence in 1999. He was convicted of petit/retail theft in the first case and of driving under the influence in the second.

News That Stunned Us
A Preventable Crime? Prosecutors asked that a judge lock up Isaiah M.K. Kalebu, who was out on bail pending trial for charges he threatened to kill his mother, after a suspicious fire at his aunt's house killed two people. Six days later, on July 19, authorities say Kalebu stabbed a 39-year-old woman to death. For that alleged crime, a judge set the bail at $10 million on July 25.

if he did not have the gun..........he would have used a knife or fire or his own hands. theese are all weapons when used as such. your friend was unstable and the gun made him dangerous. i doubt the nra defended him at all. we have the right to own guns and the nra defends that right not the taking of a life. if the government came door to door to take away all guns......only criminals would be left holding the weapons. what a lovely society that would be. a killer can kill because of what is in his heart......not in his hands. GUNS DO NOT KILL ! PEOPLE KILL !!

Sanfranguy, is an idiot. If you take all of our guns, how can we protect ourselves from ignorance spouting liberals like him. People kill people, not guns.

We are all capable of doing horrible things, when we are pushed beyond our ability to cope. That's why we see so much gun violence now. And knowing that any of us could do terrible things, you must agree that it is time to finally once and for all ban all guns now! Can you imagine how bad it's going to get as the economy gets worse. Basically each and every gun is like a little self-contained murder machine, and despite what nra says, they DO make people kill. Just holding a gun has a way of making people want to murder as many people as possible. It's the feeling of power that makes them do it. Ive seen it with my own eyes. Once a friend of mine who was a nice guy, bought a gun. And when he loaded it, we could see the change in him. He got a crazed look on his face and then he pointed that gun at my other friend and shot him dead. He pointed it at me, but the bullet jammed and I got away! They need to go house to house if need be, and collect all the guns before things get worse.

I am sick of this!! Anybody can get a freakin gun and kill their whole family for no reason. And this country is more focused on taxing cigarette smokers, and getting more money to the health nuts to feed our children better....bla bla bla....why can't we fix this problem! I say, as I have said many times before.. NO ONE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO BECOME A PARENT UNLESS THEY CAN PASS A MENTAL HEALTH EVALUATION!!! enough said

I hope that Nathan gets help to deal with what has happened to his family...but what gets me is that the husband had her arrested 2 months ago for hitting him ..but he ended up killing her. Seems like something is wrong with that

how very sad..those poor children. My heart breaks for that boy. He will never know his brothers or hear their voices again. I couldn't imagine..a 5 month old??!! I have a 6 year old, 2 year old and a 3 month old..I look at them and often wonder why anyone would want to hurt a child. Sickening..and heartbreaking.

Sadhopeful - It sounds like you could reach out to this kid. Tomorrow, when he wakes up, that little baby with it's sweet loving sounds won't be there, his brother won't be there and his stepmom won't have happy sounds to greet him. He will never be able to ask his dad for advice ever again. This kid will miss his family and I think someone should reach out to him. Is his biological mother alive?
