LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (March 13) - Ten children at an Arkansas day-care center drank windshield wiper fluid after the owner served it from a container mistaken for Kool-Aid and placed in a refrigerator, authorities said Friday. The day-care owner voluntarily surrendered her state license Friday.
Doctors estimate the children, ages 2 to 7, drank about an ounce of the blue fluid late Thursday afternoon before realizing it tasted wrong, said Laura James, a pediatric pharmacologist and toxicologist at Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock.

The operator of this home day care center in Scott, Ark., surrendered her license after 10 children were accidentally given windshield wiper fluid instead of Kool-Aid.

Only one child remained hospitalized Friday in good condition, after blood samples showed "measurable levels" of methanol, a highly toxic alcohol that can induce comas and cause blindness, officials said. In moderate cases, it can cause nausea, vomiting, staggering and sleepiness, James said.
The day care also provided the fluid for testing.
The owner bought the windshield wiper fluid with several other items on a recent shopping trip, James told The Associated Press. "This product was mistakenly grabbed and thought to be Kool-Aid and put in the refrigerator," she said.
The day care's owner, Carolyn Bynum, was interviewed Friday by child welfare investigators and gave up her license, said Julie Munsell, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Human Services. Bynum declined to comment to the AP, but Munsell said she accepted "total responsibility" for the incident.

A Preventable Crime? Prosecutors asked that a judge lock up Isaiah M.K. Kalebu, who was out on bail pending trial for charges he threatened to kill his mother, after a suspicious fire at his aunt's house killed two people. Six days later, on July 19, authorities say Kalebu stabbed a 39-year-old woman to death. For that alleged crime, a judge set the bail at $10 million on July 25.

"She was so upset about what had occurred and she was definitely worried some of the children had been injured," Munsell said. "It was just a mistake, she says. She says it was just a horrible mistake."
Bynum's license had allowed her to care for 10 children in her home in Scott, about 15 miles east of Little Rock. Munsell said Bynum had no found complaints or serious compliance issues since receiving the license in 2002.
By surrendering her license, Bynum can no longer care for the children without reapplying. State law requires a license when someone cares for more than five children from more than one family at the same time in their home.
The toxicologist warned that many antifreeze or windshield wiper solutions have bright colors, which can be mistaken for fruit drinks.
"I think the take-home message is not to have these products in the kitchen or where you're doing any kind of food preparation," she said.

Wow. Some people really need to get off their high horses. Have you really NEVER made a mistake? Does everyone here REALLY look at EVERY SINGLE LABEL EVERY TIME YOU USE SOMETHING? I really doubt it. Sounds like most of the people here keep their kids in a plastic bubble. Yes, she is at fault. Things happen though and it probably was an accident. It's highly likely that the washer fluid may have been stuck in with the pre-made drinks. How it got there, perhaps a store employee stuck it there by mistake or someone else could've put it there. The shopper may have picked it up from the shelf. Most people will pick up a random container, especially if they all look a like, because they assume if it's there with all the other jugs of pre-made drinks, it's got to be a pre-made drink. Labels mean nothing if you're doing something by habit. As for the house, we all know everyone has the money, time, and skills to keep maintenance on their mansions. Get a life people. It's obvious...

First off there is nothing wrong with her house. Maybe it is not the McMansion you live it but it's a perfectly normal home. I worked in a center that looked like that one and it was one of the best I have ever been in. I am working toward a degree in Childcare and I could tell you horror stories that far out weigh this one. However, the majority of those in the field are responsible, loving, and smart people. A horrible mistake was made, no one can deny that. She did the responsible thing by giving up her liscense. Do not lump all teachers together. Daycare/Preschool teachers are some of the most hardworking people I know. It is emotionally and physically draining. The pressure is unbelieveable. I doubt most of the people who left hateful comments could handle it for 20 minutes. I have worked with 2 year olds that have better manners and can speak better. I haven't signed into AOL in years but I had to so I could say my piece.
