(Nov. 11) -- A Fayette County grand jury has indicted former Kentucky lawmaker Steve Nunn on one count of capital murder in the death of his ex-fiancee. If convicted, the son of the state's former governor could face the death penalty.
Nunn, 57, is accused of shooting Amanda Ross, 29. Her body was found in front of her home in Lexington on Sept. 11. Hours later, police found Nunn with his wrists slashed, armed with a handgun, in a graveyard about 100 miles from the crime scene. His mother and father, former Gov. Louie Nunn, are buried at the cemetery in Hart County.

Former Kentucky legislator Steve Nunn and Amanda Ross attend a Kentucky Derby party on May 1, 2008. A grand jury has indicted Nunn on charges of murder and violating a protective order Ross obtained. Ross, who was once engaged to Nunn, was shot outside her Lexington, Ky., home in September.

The grand jury also indicted Nunn on one count of violating a protective order Ross had obtained in March. The second indictment constitutes an aggravating circumstance that makes Nunn eligible for capital punishment if convicted, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. The prosecutor hasn't said whether he will seek the death penalty.
Nunn ran unsuccessfully for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 2003. He lost a bid for re-election to the state House in 2006. The next year, he became deputy secretary of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, but resigned after being charged with hitting Ross, who worked for the state insurance department.
The ex-lawmaker pleaded not guilty to murder in September and remains jailed without bond.
