Obama Pressures Senate on Climate Bill

WASHINGTON (June 27) - Hailing the House, President Barack Obama put pressure on senators Saturday to follow its lead and pass legislation to limit greenhouse gas emissions, helping usher the U.S. into a new age of energy efficiency.
"Now my call to every senator, as well as to every American, is this: We cannot be afraid of the future. And we must not be prisoners of the past," the president said in his weekly radio and Internet address. "Don't believe the misinformation out there that suggests there is somehow a contradiction between investing in clean energy and economic growth. It's just not true."

The legislation, which the House narrowly approved Friday night, would place the first national limits on emissions of greenhouse gases from major sources — such as power plants, factories and oil refineries — to reduce the gases linked to global climate change. It would also start moving the U.S. away from fossil fuels and toward cleaner power sources, such as geothermal, wind, solar and more nuclear generators.
The potential impact on people's daily lives is great. If the proposal, which faces an uncertain fate in the Senate, were to become law, it could make it more expensive for people to heat, cool and light their homes; mean more smaller, fuel efficient and hybrid electric cars; and create more "green" jobs, or environmentally friendly ones. Windmills and solar panels might replace smokestacks.
The complex bill, would require the U.S. to reduce carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent from 2005 levels by 2020 and by 83 percent by midcentury.
Opponents complain about the costs and say some industries will simply move their operations and jobs out of the U.S. to countries that don't control greenhouse-gas emissions.
House Democratic leaders said the bill helped accomplish one of Obama's campaign promises and would make the U.S. a leader in international efforts to address climate change when negotiations take place in Denmark this year.
"We passed transformational legislation, which will take us into the future," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., after the 219-212 vote.
Success will be tougher in the Senate. Majority Leader Harry Reid says he wants to take up the legislation by the fall. Sixty votes will be needed to overcome any Republican filibuster.
The "razor-thin vote in the House spells doom in the Senate," said Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla.

At a press conference on Wednesday night, President Barack Obama tied health-care reform to economic recovery, and assailed critics of his plan. "This debate is not a game for these Americans, and they cannot afford to wait for reform any longer," he said.

The White House and congressional Democrats argued the bill would create millions of green jobs as the nation shifts to greater reliance on renewable energy sources such as wind and solar and development of more fuel-efficient vehicles — and away from use of fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal.
Republicans saw it differently.
This "amounts to the largest tax increase in American history under the guise of climate change," declared Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind.
In the Republicans' weekly radio and Internet address, House GOP leader John Boehner of Ohio said, "By imposing a tax on every American who drives a car or flips on a light switch, this plan will drive up the prices for food, gasoline and electricity."
But Obama said the measure would cost the average American about the price of a postage stamp per day.
Associated Press writers Dina Cappiello and H. Josef Hebert contributed to this report.

As the Waxman-Markey bill passes, more than 700 scientists bitterly contest the flawed notion that global warming is "caused" by man. These 700 scientists are 13 times the number of the defective thinkers that wrote the original "consensus" that climate change is man-made. Please note that global temperatures have flat-lined since 2001 and that, if anything, the Earth is cooler now than in the Viking days when you could circumnavigate Greenland in a flimsy boat. This is an impossible feat today.

What we need is a comprehensive energy bill that uses all sources of energy, cleans up the ones that are dirty, invests in alternative energy sources, and has some common sense. Since we all breathe out carbon dioxide, that would make us a source of pollution. Since the sun is most responsible for global warming, as evidenced by the heating up of the atmospheres of Mars and Jupiter, humans are not a major factor in global warming. Water vapor is more of a greenhouse gas and that is due to evaporation of water by the sun. I'd hate for Obama to wreck our economy and then find out that we are going through global cooling and we can't afford to meet the challenge.

MEMO TO EVERY THINKING AMERICAN, and TO OBAMA: CAP & TRADE IS THE MOST ANTI-FREE MARKET, ANTI-AMERICAN LEGISLATION EVER SERIOUSLY CONSIDERED BY CONGRESS. FURTHER, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO CREDIBLE EVIDENCE THAT ANYTHING WE DO WILL SUBSTANTIALLY CHANGE OR STOP "GLOBAL WARMING". FOR MILLIONS OF YEARS BEFORE MAN, THERE HAVE BEEN MAJOR NATURAL CYLES OF GLOBAL COOLING AND WARMING. DON'T ATTACK AND BURDEN THE AMERICAN BUSINESSES WHICH GIVE US JOBS, FOR SOMETHING WHICH MAY BE "FEEL GOOD" BUT HAS NO CHANCE OF MAKING ANY REAL DIFFERENCE IN GLOBAL WARMING. THIS WILL EXPORT EVEN MORE JOBS OUT OF AMERICA, ALL FOR ALMOST NO CLIMATE IMPROVEMENT. VOTE NO.

Let A equal the population of the United States. Let B equal the idiocy of the typical American.....Democracy is the theory that if you multiply A times B somehow you will come up with a brilliant result!

How laughable! Obama did this or Bush did that! The hammer that will drive the stake through America's heart is its people - a nation full of self-indulgent morons.

Obama is a true imperialist President. He wants to dictate what kind of car you drive, what kind of house you live in, what kind of energy you use, what kind of health care you use, what kind of food you eat, even what type of light bulbs you light your home with. Obama is doing this even though the U.S. Constitution does'nt give him the authority to do any of it. Apparently, Obama believes his policies supercede the authority granted by the Constitution..

This is our finest hour and it remains to be seen if we will accept the challenge of a new dictatorship in America. The foundation has been laid and the noose of tyranny is about to be tightened around the neck of liberty. Thomas Jefferson once said, " The government that govens least governs best." Obama is evil and needs to be impeached and removed from office. If this is not done we will collapse into a civil war that we may not survive as a nation. Obama is a socialistic communist that gets along well with Hugo Chavez, Castro, and Daniel Ortega. This is all the evidence we need to realize this man is an enemy of America and all of the traditional values we as Americans once held. Freedom is failing fast in America and war and secession of the states from the union could be days or weeks away.

The science behind the Cap & Tade bill is inexact and outdated. Alan Carlin's report (which the EPS suppressed) identified a number of studies that have been done by scientists that should now be considered and identified trends and other factors (water currents, etc.) that the original study did not consider. Interestingly, while CO2 levels have gone up, temperatures have decreased. That would suggest that there is no correlation between temperature and CO2 or that we should be pumping more CO2 into the air, not less. The Dem politicians however are hell-bent on pushing Cap & Trade as it's a source of revenue for them. They really don't give a damn about the Earth's temperature. Their nose is sniffing the tax dollars.

The country's economy is in dire straits and Obama is using that crisis to generate fear that unless his agenda is enacted the situation will get even worse. This guy is a lying narccist on a power trip. We are seeing our country becoming mired in debt and our foreign policy in shambles with our enemies embolded and some who were our enemies now supported by Obama. Wake up and get this tyrant voted out.

In a triumph for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House narrowly passed sweeping legislation Friday that calls for the nation\'s first limits on pollution linked to global warming and aims to usher in a new era of cleaner, yet more costly energy.
