PENSACOLA, Fla. (July 19) - The adult daughter of a slain Florida couple known for adopting 13 special needs children said she is planning to move into her parents' home and raise the children as her own. Ashley Markham, 26, told the Pensacola News Journal in Sunday's editions that she and her husband intend to care for the children, saying it was her mother's wish.
A phone message was left by The Associated Press on Sunday with her attorney, Crystal Spencer.

Markham also defended her parents, Byrd and Melanie Billings, whose lives and deaths had gained national attention since the July 9 attack.
Byrd Billings, 66, was an entrepreneur who had dabbled in used cars, boats and the adult entertainment industry. His 43-year-old wife was a country music lover who fed the homeless and was devoted to her MySpace page. They adopted 13 children with autism, Down Syndrome and other developmental disabilities and lived in a sprawling home west of Pensacola.
Markham said her father was able to build a comfortable life for the family through a lifetime of hard work and planning.
"My dad is a very smart businessman. My dad worked from 6 in the morning to 8 at night Monday through Saturday," Markham said.
The two were found slain at their home in what authorities described as a well-executed invasion captured on surveillance video. Nine of the couple's children were in the home during the attack, though none were injured. Eight people have been arrested in the case, including a teenager, an Air Force Sergeant and an antique mall owner.
The children were taken back to the house Saturday for the first time since the killings.
Markham said the house now has new doors and carpeting. A security gate is going in and locks have been changed.
"There were 20 family friends out there cleaning," she said. The children were anxious to get back home to their toys and go swimming, she said.

Just so you people know...when you "adopt" You are responsible for taking care of the child or in this case children! Not any sort of government agency is responsible after you adopt a child. That child is yours. That family that adopted those children had money, so they didn't need financial help. They adopted these children out of love not for any other reason. If they were not able to take care of these children with love and a good financial status they would not had been able to adopt them!

Mrs. Markham is giving unconditional love to children who, through no fault of their own, have special needs.Don't you wish to be loved that much.

Not all states offer that type of adoptions anymore (Supplimented adoptions that is, where the state pays the parents to adopt special need children and they receive monthly stipends just as if they were foster parent, ONLY now they are the legal adoptive parents of these lovely children). Many of them have reduced the supplimental checks for support of these special children. Having worked for a state agency in foster care, I can say that to find parents who are willing to accept into their homes and lives children with as severe of disabilities as you see with this family, it doesn't matter how much you get, it is three full time jobs to get through the day. These parents deserve kudos for all of the work. The devestation of losing people of this caliber is a terrible shock to the disabled community as well as to the children of these great people. I wish Ashley and Blue all the best of luck in the future as they step into the very big shoes of her parents and continue to raise ...

You also are paid by the state for each hour for just being there with the children on top of a disability check for each so it is a lot of money. Centers for CDC are coming to the caretakers homes and soliciting for this service. REF: APD Operating procedures and you will understand this.

I believe if the kids were adopted, they wouldn't get any payment from the government. I am not sure if there is a program where they get money from the government for having disabled children. I just know normally only foster parents get money. (Those are the people who need to be monitored. Many people get into foster care just for the money. ) Once a child is adopted I believe they are the parents responsibility. Now, if you are living in poverty you can collect a check from the government. But, if sounds like he made enough money, so they probably don't get help. But, if they do get some money to help pay to take care of these children, then so be it. I am sure it's not a fortune. Can you even begin to imagine caring for disabled children, the time and money involved.. I don't think they were in it for money. I think they really wanted to make a difference. God bless them for taking on that huge responsibility. You people need to quit judging them so harshly when you ...

Any plans for the future are now gone for the daughter... I'm sure she didn't plan for this, and now she is tied to 13 disabled kids, that need 24 hour care, for the rest of her life!!!!!!. You couldn't pay me enough to have 13, very needy children, suck the life out of me... Sorry.
