Sarkozy: Burqas Not Welcome in France

PARIS (June 22) - President Nicolas Sarkozy said the Muslim burqa would not be welcome in France, calling the full-body religious gown a sign of the "debasement" of women.
In the first presidential address to parliament in 136 years, Sarkozy faced critics who fear the burqa issue could stigmatize France's Muslims and said he supported banning the garment from being worn in public.

"In our country, we cannot accept that women be prisoners behind a screen, cut off from all social life, deprived of all identity," Sarkozy said to extended applause at the Chateau of Versailles, southwest of Paris.
"The burqa is not a religious sign, it's a sign of subservience, a sign of debasement — I want to say it solemnly," he said. "It will not be welcome on the territory of the French Republic."
Dozens of legislators have called for creating a commission to study a possible ban in France, where there is a small but growing trend of wearing the full-body garment despite a 2004 law forbidding it from being worn in public schools.
France has Western Europe's largest Muslim population, an estimated 5 million people, and the 2004 law sparked fierce debate both at home and abroad.
Even the French government has been divided over the issue, with Immigration Minister Eric Besson saying a full ban would only "create tensions," while junior minister for human rights Rama Yade said she was open to a ban if it was aimed at protecting women forced to wear the burqa.

The terms "burqa" and "niqab" often are used interchangeably in France. The former refers to a full-body covering worn largely in Afghanistan with only a mesh screen over the eyes, whereas the latter is a full-body veil, often in black, with slits for the eyes.
A leading French Muslim group, the French Council for the Muslim Religion, has warned against studying the burqa, saying it would "stigmatize" Muslims.
Sarkozy was due to host a state dinner Monday with Sheik Hamad Bin Jassem Al Thani of Qatar, where women wear Islamic head coverings in public — whether while shopping or driving cars.

One thing I do not understand is how covering your body becomes a way of depriving a woman of their needs! How can a non-Muslim dictate what Islam is or what teachings of Islam are?

Yes it is correct that it is NOT said in the Qur'an that women have to wear a burqa...however..it IS said that women have to cover their hair. It is also said that women must not wear tight clothing (that would reveal their figure) otherwise they will not even smell the scent of Jannah (Heaven). The burqa is loose clothing, and so women who wear it have a means of trying their best not to show their figure and therefore increasing their chance of entering Jannah, which is the ultimate goal in most Muslims lives. That is the main aim of the burqa. Although there is also the fact that it helps "brothers" not look at them with desire, this is not the main aim; it is like an added benefit to both males and females.

Sarkozy is supposed a free minded individual however his comments reflect the opposite. In fact,he's worse than the Taliban mullahs who enforce the burqa upon women. He needs to address the real problems of his country rather than pick on an insignificant issue such as the burqa.

lets get to the plain and simple here ! The Burqa for some Muslim women is a personal choice and must be respected , however some have to wear them and are made to do so ,head scarves do not intimidate in any way but alas the full face (letterbox) type is intimidating to many non Muslims and in my opinion should be not be worn , I can understand in a hot and hostile sandy climate they have a functional use, but in the temperate climate in Europe I really don't think so , I feel that Muslim women especially in the teaching proffesion in particular should not be allowed to wear the letterbox type , communication through facial expression is essential when in the public domain , the normal head scarf is quite flattering , so lets get this debate in perspective ,

The subject of the burqha is not up for debate. The French president needs to have a greater awareness of the Islamic world. The wearing of the burqha is more cultural nature not religious. If women want to wear it that is their choice.

Women are forced to wear these garments in Afghanistan! They are not a religious garment, but a symbol of enforced female imprisonment, devised by the Taliban to dehumanise women even further!
