Protesters Kiss Near Mormon Temple

Gay Couple Arrested for Kiss on Cheek Days Before

(July 13) -- Protesters engaged in very public displays of affection in front of the Mormon church headquarters in Salt Lake City after two men were detained for sharing a kiss on the cheek in a plaza owned by the church.
Matt Aune said he and his partner, Derek Jones, were walking home from a concert on the night of July 9 when they cut through the Main Street Plaza near the Salt Lake City Mormon temple.

Aune, 28, said he gave Jones, 25, a hug and kiss and that the two were then approached by a security guard, who asked them to leave, telling them they were being inappropriate and that public displays of affection aren't allowed on the property. He said other guards arrived and the men were handcuffed.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said that the men became argumentative and refused to leave after being asked to stop their "inappropriate behavior." The men say they were targeted because they are gay.
Police later arrived and both men were cited with misdemeanor trespassing, Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Robin Snyder said.
"It doesn't matter what they were asked to leave for," Snyder said. "If they are asked to leave and don't they are ... trespassing."
The incident sparked a protest on Sunday: a "kiss-in" at the headquarters of the LDS Church in Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
More than 100 people, some wearing bright lipstick and others with hearts pinned to their clothing, gathered near the Main Street Plaza to share kisses on the cheek and mouth to show their support for Aune and Jones. Security guards and later police stopped the protesters from actually entering onto the plaza.
Jones and Aune attended the event, but remained quiet at the back of the crowd.
"I just want to get the message out," Jones said. "We're very flattered and very proud."
The Tribune reported the incident and protest have become a "flash point" of controversies involving the LDS Church: first, the sale of the plaza from the city to the church 10 years ago and second, the church's more recent support of California's gay marriage ban.

Jesus just told me, with suspicious cheerfulness, that it is so-called "Gay Pride" the last week of June. Since God created me in His image, I have selflessly devoted my life to passing on th efavor by trying to make everyone just like me. As such, nothing is more galling than people I approve of being happy. And I would not be a True Christian (aka Baptist) if I didn't view other people feeling content as a ripe opportunity to besmirch thme, leech out their joy in Jesus' name -- and then make some tax-free cash! Therefore, I encourae all homos to sign an irrevocable $9,899 contract with my ex-gay ministry: BASH (Baptists Are Saving Homosexuals) Building on the qualified success of my Ex-Negro Ministry, BASH has helped countless* gay men to find frumpy lesbian wives and renounce the silly, annoying hobby of being who they are! I apologize about my long comments. I started off mad when I wrote my last one, and the one before I wrote because I don't think it's fair that my church is targeted that way. Besides, they aren't the only religious group (collectively) that are against gay marriage, so are other Christians (yes, we are Christian). But for those of you who can't see my comment, I said if you really want to know about the church, attend a few of the meetings to get a feel for what it's really like and just how nice the people are (at least I hope they would be). And I even apologized for my rant and name-calling, but it's hard for me as a Latter-Day Saint to know there are sites out there that tear us down. So I expressed my outrage. And also if you want to learn about the church you can contact me; I just don't want any words of intolerance being sent to me. I don't need it b/c I don't really care to know what those kinds of hateful people think. [analyzethis07@aol.com]

EXPOSED?! What do you mean exposed? There is nothing wrong with the church! You really think ex-members understand the church? No, they don't get it! Oh my gosh you people that read that crap are so stupid! I'd say "sorry", but I'm not. Wow you'd dummies would fall for anything like that. Yeah I'm a bad example as a member to call others names, but I can't believe some of the things you are saying. Members that leave the church really don't understand it at all. People that "expose" the church twist any truth around that they can to make it out like it's bad. There could be some truth, but it's probably about some dirty Mormons, just like there are dirty cops. Do you know what members do? Go to church every Sunday, read their scriptures, pray to the same God as everyone else, preach and stand up for what they believe in, pray for people who aren't doing well, and encourage and do volunteer work. They even help with aid when natural disasters hit. They're good people with a good heart. ...

To sosusa8: Thank you. Seriously. And to those of you idiots who think LDS people are part of a cult get a book or something. You shouldn't say dumb things about something you know absolutely nothing about. I am so TIRED of people assuming that. The FUNDAMENTAL church is a cult. They don't think on the same terms we do. Get that through your heads, for real! And the city is not homophobic, there just happens to be a great concentration of members that don't support the movement. Maybe they didn't need to be detained, but whatever, if they were tresspassing and did not leave when they were told to, then they were violating the law. I know some of you LIBERALS will argue about it being gay discrimination (no I'm not Republican, so don't give me any crap about being right-wing), but they weren't allowed to be on the premises anyway. And the guard would have said the same to a straight couple b/c he said no PDA was allowed there either. If you don't believe me read the article again. And ...
