I dont think that, that is right at all! How is this right? The hospital should NOT be able to take organs of patients unless, brain dead and parents/ legal guardians are available to say yes or no they want to wait for sometime. But then again once proclaimed brain dead you are considered dead. Because you obviously need your brain to function. They should have waited to see if progress with the patient happened and than, taken the organs. Paying customer or not, they need to think about things before just taking their ogans if there is a possibility of living. My deepest condolences to the family. That must have been tough.

First of all, the Jacobs have my deepest heart felt condolence for the loss of their son. I don't think anyone knows how difficult a decision it is to donate a child's organs unless you have been in a similar situation. We recently donated our 24 year old daughter's organs and although our situation was quite different, the memory of the hospital stay and the decision will always be with us. Would we do it again if we had it to do over again or would we decide something different? I don't know. Everyone must make their own decision when faced with such a very difficult situation.

It all comes down to business. The hospital makes a buck any way it can. They probably had a paying customer for the organs.

myguitarhasaname Hospitals are evil, deadly, dangerous, places. And yes, I do know what I'm talking about.-----------I agree! And I've even heard doctors say this.

JOHNRHABIBMD You have got to be kidding me. I have worked on a transplant service in Miami and I can tell you no donor makes it to the operating room without the documentation of brain death signed and sealed. This guy signed the documents and now he wants to collect on his sons tragedy is pretty sickening. His son was dead long before he hit the operating room and no one forces or pressures a family into this, trust me. The guy likes dollars more than he grieves his sons demise thats for sure.-------Maybe you work for a decent, ethical place, but not every place is like that. Many years ago in Los Angeles, corneas were routinely harvested, with or without permission -- look it up -- there was an article in the L.A. Times about it. And get off your high horse. The parents have every right to sue, WITHOUT being called "greedy," if the hospital harvested organs before the kid was dead.

Zodiac000 Let's be real here. The first real problem was snowboarding in the first place! I dont know who the idiot was that decided to cross surfing and skiing but it is a very stupid, and unsafe sport. I'm sure this young man was showing off, acting stupid and wiped out or hit his head on a tree and that's the real cause of his death. Trying to make money off his death because the parents are misinformed is cruel and greedy.-------No, YOU get real! What makes you think snowboarding is any more dangerous than other sport? All sports can be dangerous. Getting out of bed in the morning is dangerous! (but so is STAYING in bed, trying to avoid all danger -- bedsores, y'know) And what makes you so "sure" that the kid was "showing off" when he was injured? The hospital harvested organs while the kid was still alive, still had hope of recovering! So the parents are suing -- this is NOT greed!

I think when a person has a head injury like this boy and Mrs. Richardson that they should be on life support for at least a week or two before any talk of organ donating , I have always wondered if there is a rush to harvest organs for someone else and the organ donar was declared brain dead to soon.

Oh money will make you feel better for losing your son, won't it. This family has lots of grief and resentment issues that money will not solve. How will making the hospital pay hold the individuals responsible ? All it will do is cost resources for people who need care now, not some dead teen who was probably hot dogging it and caused his own death two years ago. The teen is responsible for his death, not the hospital or the dad who is filled with grief for signing a piece of paper. Sorry to be so harsh but there is no common sense in the world anymore.

They are claiming the brain was not dead aren't they?If the brain isn't dead they shouldn't have done it and I believe they have you sign a consent when they thing there is a possible you won't live ayway. Organ harvesting is abused often because think aout it, you can sacrifice one person and save many.
