Attorney General Weighs Torture Probe

WASHINGTON (July 12) - Contrary to White House wishes, Attorney General Eric Holder may push forward with a criminal investigation into the Bush administration's harsh interrogation practices used on suspected terrorists.
Holder is considering whether to appoint a prosecutor and will make a final decision within the next few weeks, a Justice Department official told The Associated Press. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on a pending matter.
A move to appoint a criminal prosecutor is certain to stir partisan bickering that could create a distraction to President Barack Obama's efforts to push ambitious health care and energy reform.
Obama has repeatedly expressed reluctance to having a probe into alleged Bush-era abuses and resisted an effort by congressional Democrats to establish a "truth commission," saying the nation should be "looking forward and not backwards."
Justice Department spokesman Matt Miller said Holder planned to "follow the facts and the law."
"We have made no decisions on investigations or prosecutions, including whether to appoint a prosecutor to conduct further inquiry," he told the AP on Saturday. "As the attorney general has made clear, it would be unfair to prosecute any official who acted in good faith based on legal guidance from the Justice Department."
Newsweek magazine, which first reported the development, said Holder was aware of the political implications of having a probe and preferred not to create unnecessary trouble for the White House. Still, the attorney general was troubled by what he learned in reports about the treatment of prisoners at the CIA's "black sites."
The probe would focus in part on whether CIA personnel tortured terrorism suspects after Sept. 11, 2001. Holder has said those who acted within the government's legal guidance will not be prosecuted, but has left open the possibility of pursuing those who went beyond the guidance and broke the law.
Holder has discussed with his staff the possibility of a prosecutor, saying he needed someone with "gravitas and grit," the magazine reported. In the end, the attorney general asked for a list of 10 candidates, five from within the Justice Department and five from outside.
"I hope that whatever decision I make would not have a negative impact on the president's agenda," Holder told Newsweek. "But that can't be a part of my decision."

It is very easy to verify facts, just open a history book or even google and weed out the fiction. Nazism is often considered by scholars to be a form of fascism. The Nazis formed most of their alliances on the RIGHT. The Nazis were one of several historical groups that used the term National Socialism to describe themselves, and in the 1920s they became the largest such group. . Among the key elements of Nazism were anti-parliamentarism, Pan-Germanism, racism, collectivism eugenics, antisemitism, anti-communism, totalitarianism and opposition to economic liberalism and political liberalism.....that's correct, the NAZI hated liberals! Amazing similarities of right wingers today and yesterday. A teleprompter breaking is very insignificant; silly republicans- trix is for kids! An investigation of the former administration is truly needed.

Justice selectively served is justice denied to ALL. Obama's administration is legally bound to prosecute all potential law-breakers including Bush Junior and Cheney despite being politically inconvenient. Failure to do so constitute obstruction of justice by the Obama administration. We gained independence in order not to have the King George look-likes run roughshod over and trample our constitution. NOBODY IS ABOVE THE LAW INCLUDING ESPECIALLY THOSE ELECTED PUBLIC SERVANTS TRUSTED BY THE PEOPLE TO REPRESENT AND CONDUCT IMPORTANT BUSINESS OF RUNNING OUR GOVERNMENT ON OUR BEHALF. THESE ARE OUR SERVANTS AND NOT OUR LORDS.

What happened to the rule of law? Is there no accountability in this country? Can we break the law and go scot free just because we are powerful? Who are we? Myths take on proportions of their own. The myth that we don't torture has been destroyed. The myth that Cheney and Bush didn't lie has popped. The myth that we went to war over WMD's has been falsified. Now it is up to Americans to show their worth. Do we lead by example or are we sheep. Many on this thread think we should remain sheep, BAAAAAAA and keep our mouths shut and accept that we don't believe in the rule of law. But there are others who see us as leaders in the world, ones who can recognize our mistakes, fix them and continue to lead. If we don't lead, if we don't believe in the rule of law no one will and this world we share will only continue to degenerate. You choose.

Holder should be looking into why BHO won't release any details of his birth, attending physician, place of birth and his early scholastic records. Something really smells bad here.

this was an AP story about a Newsweek article .... why is it that it looks to me like the AP is trying to warn Eric Holder to ( be very careful ) of the political ramifications.... when widiot or some R wing scum says anything... they just print it... their excuse for printing their crap is that they do not editorialize... the swift boaters said this... rove said that.... but Holder is not allowed to proceed as he sees fit

Attorney General Weighs Torture Probe ! What's to weigh? The Attorney General is REQUIRED to enforce the LAWS of the United States, it's Constitution and Treaties. No OPTIONS! If a law has been possibly broke, REQUIRED TO INVESTIGATE. If the investigation shopws illegal activity, he is REQUIRED to PROSECUTE. Key word REQUIRED.
