MARYVILLE, Ill. (March 10) – Terry J. Sedlacek was called a quiet teen who washed dishes and helped prepare food at his family's restaurant. After a hospitalization during which he almost died, he became known for odd behavior, such as making barking noises. His body would sometimes jerk.

Verna Giley, a former cook at the Key Galaxy Restaurant in Alhambra, said Sedlacek never was threatening — nothing like the man prosecutors charged Monday with gunning down a Baptist pastor in the middle of his Sunday sermon and then stabbing two congregants.
Neither Madison County prosecutors nor Illinois State Police commented on a possible motive, or whether Sedlacek even knew the Rev. Fred Winters, a married father of two who led the First Baptist Church for nearly 22 years.
"We're still not sure what the reasoning was," said Illinois State Police Lt. Scott Compton, who added investigators had not yet interviewed Sedlacek on Monday afternoon.
However, authorities say Sedlacek appeared to have planned the attack, since he referred to Sunday as "death day" on a planner found in his Troy home and he carried enough ammunition to kill 30 people.
Madison County State's Attorney William Mudge did not have any other details on the day planner entry.

"The only thing I can really comment on is he came armed with many rounds of ammunition and a knife, and I think we can surmise that more bloodshed may have occurred," Mudge said.
Sedlacek, 27, of Troy, was charged Monday with first-degree murder and aggravated battery. He was ordered held without bail.
He remained in serious condition Tuesday in Saint Louis University Hospital's intensive-care unit, said hospital spokeswoman Laura Keller.
Sedlacek's attorney, Ron Slemer, told the Belleville News-Democrat that his client has deteriorated both mentally and physically since contracting Lyme disease.

But Dr. Eugene Shapiro, a Lyme disease expert at Yale University, said it would be unlikely that the tick-borne illness would make someone so violent. "Lyme disease doesn't cause people to shoot people," Shapiro said.
None of the 150 worshippers attending the Sunday service seemed to recognize Sedlacek, and investigators did not know details of words he exchanged with Winters just before he allegedly began firing. They planned to review an audio recording of the service.
Sedlacek had 10 rounds of ammunition in a handgun and was carrying two more 10-round magazines in his pocket at First Baptist on Sunday, said Mudge. The .45-caliber Glock jammed after four shots were fired at Winters.

Church Shootings
In November 2008, a man opened fire at St. Thomas Syrian Orthodox Knanaya Church in Clifton, N.J., during Sunday services, killing his estranged wife, another man, and critically wounding a third person. According to a witness, the gunman entered the church and said, "I came to take my wife." Click through to see other church shootings that have happened in recent years.

Mudge said it appeared Sedlacek may have arrived at the church, about four miles from his home, as early as 5:30 a.m., partly because his Jeep was in a parking space close to a door in the crowded parking lot.
The first bullet was deflected by a Bible held by Winters, 45, but a subsequent shot struck him in the heart.
That first bullet exploded Winters' Bible, sending a confetti-like spray of paper into the air in a horrifying scene worshippers initially thought was a skit, police said. Witnesses said Winters managed to run halfway down the sanctuary's side aisle before collapsing.
An autopsy found Winters was hit by one bullet that went straight through his heart, said Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn.
Authorities said Sedlacek stabbed himself in the throat while being wrestled to the ground by two congregants, who also suffered knife wounds.

News That Stunned Us
A Preventable Crime? Prosecutors asked that a judge lock up Isaiah M.K. Kalebu, who was out on bail pending trial for charges he threatened to kill his mother, after a suspicious fire at his aunt's house killed two people. Six days later, on July 19, authorities say Kalebu stabbed a 39-year-old woman to death. For that alleged crime, a judge set the bail at $10 million on July 25.

A 39-year-old congregant, Terry Bullard, was upgraded to fair condition Tuesday. The third victim, Keith Melton, was treated and released.
Slemer said his client's family is "very sorry for the pastor's congregation." First Baptist Associate Pastor Mark Jones said one of the church's pastors visited with Sedlacek's family Monday.
"We actually pray for him," Jones said.

People make choices, they like the outcome or they dont. The man who killed Pastor Fred, knew he was wrong. Thats why he hid the weapon, thats why he attempted to kill himself. I am about tired of hearing weak excuses about mental illness and blame placing on anyone but the guilty party. At what point, do we become accountable for out behaviour and/or decisions? Grow up and realize, that this man did what he did, and no one is to blame but him. No the State of Illinois...not a tick, no one but him.

To Kosn8, as to your question about why God did not stop this killing. God allows man to make decisions. Man did not want God to interfere and chose to make his own way. Well now he has choices, he is not a preprogrammed robot. He chooses to either believe in God, or not too. He chooses to do right or do wrong. So many people ask this same question. God does not interfere in man's choices because that was what man chose in the beginning in the garden of eden. He decided he could be like God and so he chose to disobey God and eat of the fruit of knowlege of right and wrong. Then he had to move out of the house like a knowit all teen and make his own way in the world. He was sooo smart that he chose his own decisions over God's. What a mistake. So many of us suffer because someone chose to cause us pain. The drunk chose to drive that car and kill that family. The man chose to pull the trigger on a gun and take a life. If God interfered in all of this, people would call Him a tyrannt! The...

AnnEdyth, it is a hard thing to pray for, or forgive someone who has caused you pain or hurt you or your loved ones. But...if you are a Christian, then you must try and do so. It really does make a difference in your outlook. Also brings peace to you the more you pray for them. As hard as that seems, it is true. I have done it many times. It frees you of all of the anger and hate that eats at you. It gives you insight into that person's spirit and The Father said to pray for those who despitefully use you. He knows that forgiveness and prayer for the one who treated you bad will bring healing to your heart. It really does. God is so very wise! He is so loving. I am telling you that God always teaches freedom and peace and love. The Bible talks about people who cannot forgive and dwell on the bad, that it cause the bones to dry up...causes illness like arthritis! which dries up (or wears away) the cartlige between the bones and causes physical and mental pain.

DavidBlanket, you are for sure a Christian. So am I. I am very happy that the Lord chose me. I also know that our Messiah told us to pray for those who do bad to us. We are to show forgiveness and love, show the light of God in a dark world. I feel very sorry for anyone who does not know Jesus. They are really missing out! If you ever had a special meeting with the Holy Spirit, you would NEVER question God's reality again. I feel sorry for nonbelievers. They are really lost. It is so heartbreaking to know they refuse to even search for Jesus. They would find Him if they did. I feel sorry for all involved in this tradgedy! The Pastor's wife and kids and the church who lost him and the shooter and his family. It is really time to pray for all of these. For nonbelievers: Try to get a copy of: Case for Christ or How to know that God is real! They are at a Christian bookstore, maybe even online. These books will challenge your reasons for not knowing God and teach you things you did not kno...

I am so surprised at so many who have no compassion for the Pastor, his family and especially his wife. It is only God working in her heart that allows her the freedom and compassion to pray for the shooter. It sounds much like what happened to Christians during the days of Rome as they were slaughtered in the arena. I have great sympathy for Pastor's wife and I feel sympathy for the shooter who will waste the rest of his life in jail. I will try to forgive , with God's help, those who are so mean and nasty and enjoy being that way so much.

Why didn't Rev. Winters' OMNISCIENT(All wise, All Knowing) GOD prevent this tragedy? Since HE KNEW of it in advance? Unless maybe it was HIS WILL. But then why would it be HIS WILL?

LashyLady76..If some of the people in the congregation had guns on them they could have shot this loser like the dog that he is and the preacher would still be alive. You need to reread the original article concerning this shooting. The shooter walked up to the preacher casually and shot him. Nobody in the Church could have seen this coming. It is doubtful anybody having a gun or guns would have prevented this. The killer tried to kill himself after the shooting and had no intention of living. People always think having guns in the hands of law abiding citizens will prevent these kind of violent acts but the reality is that unless any of you are psychic it wont matter. I can walk into almost any public place in this country and open fire. If I am not concerned for my life I doubt anybody having guns would prevent me from killing my fair share. This guy may be mentally ill so hold your judgments.

Although the reason why Terry Sedlacek, left, allegedly walked into an Illinois church and fatally shot the pastor remains a mystery, authorities receive a clue after finding an entry in the 27-year-old\'s planner referring to Sunday, the day of the attack, as death day.
