Palestinian negotiator: 'Defining moment' is here

JERUSALEM -The chief Palestinian negotiator on Monday warned Israel that if it does not take peacemaking seriously, it will find itself dealing with the militant Hamas instead of moderates like him.
Negotiator Saeb Erekat and other Palestinian officials have been quoted as recommending dismantling the Palestinian Authority, set up in interim accords with Israel to prepare for creation of a Palestinian state. Erekat said that plan has failed because "18 years of negotiations since the two-state solution was raised have gone nowhere."
"We have reached our defining moment," he said. "We are still trying to convince the Israelis to stop (West Bank) settlement activities" and accept a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza, and if progress is not made, "we will have to take other steps." He would not elaborate.
But he denied calling for dissolving the Palestinian Authority. "I didn't say that. Nobody said that," he told The Associated Press in a telephone interview late Monday.
He spoke as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was about to meet President Barack Obama in Washington.
Palestinian officials have been expressing extreme frustration at the stalled peace negotiations, blaming Israel and calling on the U.S. to exert pressure.
Several officials have been quoted in recent days as calling for dissolution of the Palestinian Authority, but that would leave a power vacuum that could be filled only by Israel or Hamas. Instead, the idea is seen as a way to press Israel and the United States to take steps toward a peace accord.
Palestinian reformer Mustafa Barghouti, who served once as a Cabinet minister, dismissed talk of dissolving the government. "That would be a mistake," he told the AP. "What should happen is that we should defy the Israeli rules and regulations."
Last week Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he would not like to run for re-election in January voting. He left open the possibility of recanting if Israel stops all construction in the settlements, as he has been demanding before peace talks resume.
Erekat warned that if not, Abbas might step down before the election. That would make the speaker of the parliament, Abdel Aziz Duaik of Hamas, the acting president. "How would Israel like to deal with Hamas?" Erekat asked, indicating that this, too, was a pressure tactic against Israel.
Other Palestinians say that talk of mass resignations if Abbas steps down or dissolution of the government are meant as pressure tactics against Israel and the U.S.

DSS I hate to correct you but the rest of the "moderate" Arab states have already stated they will never go along with the peace treaty unless Israel accepts the Palestinian right of return for all Palestinians. So where have they changed. You know that Israel can never agree to that because it would be the end of Israel. So Abbas is forced to listen to the other Arab states and even if a peace treaty was agreed to, the other Arab countries would still not make peace. Don't you get it yet? The Arabs will never tolerate a Jewish and democratic state in their midsts.

This war on terror is about Islam. It is not peacful or tolerant. If you noticed there seems to be a lot of muslims comiting terror. The religion of Islam tells it follwers to fight in the cause of Islam. Muslims whom comit terror are rewarded by Allah for killing non-muslims. Islam never has peacfully coexisted, and today there is not one country in the world that has peace with the Muslims. It has been a 1400 year old Jihad. It is a world wide Jihad. Isreal Jeserlum the bith place of Christanty and Judiusum. Jihad is world wide, America to.

I dunno Cpat. The Palis population has tripled. That doesn't seem like the Palestinians are suffering too much. Again Cpat posts his rhetoric and never answers like all the bigots do. Notice they never respond to a post, but just post their hate and refuse to discuss their hate. Ya see their Church of the Unholy bigot doesn't allow them the time to respond to their hate posts. They never respond, just keep on posting the hate. Tell the Pastor Bigot he just doesn't get it yet. Tell him to try to find some educated people with some smarts. People like Cpat, localhoney, natoswego combined have an IQ lower than Bush. Now that is low. Oh and Irgun, loco? Why not read a history book once every ten years girl. Your knowledge is underwhelming.

Of course it is. So why should anyone intelligent listen to your ridiculous post? They shouldn't. Another dimwitted bigot bites the dirt. Nice.

Then you say the Irgun did it. Now loco why not make it up as you go along? Why that is what you did. Imagine that.

Actually it doesn't matter who Israel deals with, both the Palestinian authority and Hamas want the destruction of Israel. Both have failed to change their charter that calls for the destruction of Israel and the Jews, both have refused to recognize Israel as a Jewish state. Both want the right of return for all the Palestinians just like the rest of the Arab world does, and both want Jerusalem. So the Arabs want but refuse to give a little or change their demands. So why should Israel deal with them? So if there is no negotiation the Palestinians will start the violence all over again? Big whoop. You don't threaten war if there is no peace and you don't get what you want.
