Damon says he bought the winning ticket at the Great Bend Dillons grocery store around 3 p.m. Wednesday, seven hours before the drawing in the multistate game.
"I wasn’t sure how much I'd won," Damon told the Great Bend Tribune. "I figured it was $15 million. When they said it was $96.6 million, I about fell over. I've been saying for years that I was going to win a Powerball jackpot someday."
Damon had the choice of taking the prize in a lump sum or in annual payments. He decided to take the cash option, which will give him a check of almost $34 million after taxes.
The Great Bend Tribune said Damon plans to spend some of his prize money helping local churches and taking his grandson to Las Vegas for his 21st birthday.
