Archdiocese to Probe Claim of Miracle

(June 29) -- A panel appointed by the Archdiocese of Baltimore is about to take on a rare investigation -- whether prayers to a 19th-century priest miraculously cured an Annapolis, Md., woman of terminal cancer, The Baltimore Sun reported.
The case is just the fifth such investigation in the archdiocese's 200-year history. If the priest, Francis X. Seelos, is found to be behind the woman's cure, it could move him closer to being declared a Roman Catholic saint. The pope will have the final say.

Mary Ellen Heibel, 71, was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2003, The Sun said. She underwent surgery, but doctors later discovered the procedure had missed a cancerous lymph node. The disease spread to her lungs, liver, stomach and chest.
She began praying to Seelos, who had been a pastor at her church, St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. Seelos died in 1867 while treating yellow fever victims in New Orleans. In the 1970s, a woman there beat terminal liver cancer after praying to Seelos. The Catholic Church investigated that case and deemed it a miracle, a finding that led to Seelos' beatification in 2000.
Heibel, her husband and their priest began a special series of prayers to Seelos in January 2005. At that point, her doctor believed she had six, maybe 12, months to live. The following month, a scan showed something stunning: All her tumors were gone. And, according to the results of her latest scan, in March 2008, she's still healthy.
"I'd never seen anybody be cured and not recur until her," her doctor, Michael K. Gibson, told The Sun.
The church panel studying Heibel's case will include a medical expert. For more details on her recovery and the Seelos investigation, go to The Sun.

G Spike 68....What is your definition of "Walking with God"?? Just because I think the bible is used as a copout for people to use to propagate thier own demented fantasies...doesn't mean that I am not a Christian...you are probably one of those that thinks if you don't read the bible you're not Walking with God!

Adam and Eve are all part of the creation fairytale. It's a bible STORY. Why do you think they're called bible STORIES? Certainly not because they're bible FACTS. When you become an adult you should realize the difference between fantasy and reality. If you can't do that, you need professional help.

Bostonbred - And your point is? The woman has had cancer for a number of years. I would expect her to look older than she really is.

Stateman26 - Oh, no...not that old saw again! You should start singing a different tune because that one is getting really, really old. Besides, it has nothing to do with the topic.

I believe in miracles, I'm just not sure about praying to anyone or thing other than the One God, who is a jealous God (KJV Exo. 20:5; Exo. 34:14; Deu. 4:24;Deu. 5:9) it is in the bible 17 times but I have listed only a few. And according to scripture it says call no man your Father upon the earth (KJV Mat. 23:9). So I have some reservations about praying to a man made "Saint".I am happy for this woman but I think that it was her faith that made her whole (KJV Mat. 9:22; Mat. 15:28).God Bless you all and may your faith be multiplied...Your friend,Laura

I wanted to clear things up for Grant06; Religion is mentioned five times tn the bible and never in a positive way thats why a true believer is considered "spiritual" not religious. God is not a respector of persons (KJV Acts 10:34). Also read Ecc. 9:11, please learn scripture before you condemn it,and remember bad things will happen to good people, just like good things will happen to bad people.

So,when 9,000 kids die every DAY from starvation and dysentary do you think their mothers didn't pray to the right god or "saint" to save their babies as well? Maybe these poor moms just don't know the secret "prayer" code. What pure BULL-oney religion will always be.

Quite possibly a miracle or that cancer is as much of a an emotional and mental disease as it is physical. With prayer comes hope and aids in stress reduction. It is also a normal function of the human body for healthy cells to develop into cancer cells but it is the strength of the immune system that dictates weather it accumulates and divides or is killed off. It is a non documented medical fact that in many cases when left alone cancer goes into remission. It is the brutal means of treatment that inhibits our bodies natural ability to fight this disease. This is just an example of that truth and in it's own right clearly is a miracle. There is no doubt any conventional means of therapy was ever administered otherwise it would have been chalked up as so and it would not be deemed a miracle. This is not the first time this has happened and certainly wont be the last.
