Monkeys live longer on low-cal diet; would humans?

WASHINGTON -Eat less, live longer? It seems to work for monkeys: A 20-year study found cutting calories by almost a third slowed their aging and fended off death. This is not about a quick diet to shed a few pounds. Scientists have long known they could increase the lifespan of mice and more primitive creatures — worms, flies — with deep, long-term cuts from normal consumption.

Yes, we know we eat too much, but how do we learn to manage our eatting? Studies like this bring the topic to the forefront for us to prioritize. Plenty of books talk about healthy living. Nevertheless, we need inspiration to do it right. We can eat plenty if we eat the right things. Joyce Meyer said in one of her books "God said we can eat freely of the fruit on the trees ... He didn't say we could eat freely of every Krispy Creme on the street." How about we study some role models that have done it right despite all the temptations in the modern world? One entertaining and helpful book is about 101 year old Elsa Brehm Hoffmann (born in Yonkers, lived in Mt Vernon and Rye, NY, and now lives independently in south Florida, as active and attractive as ever). See the book and the website of the same name "Elsa's Own Blue Zone." elsasownbluezone.com . Barbara Walters found her to interview for a longevity special after a 2 year search in America for the best centenarian role mod...

Of course humans would live longer if we ate lower calorie meals. Unless you're a fundamentalist Christian--because, unlike the rest of us, fundamentalist Christians aren't related to monkeys.

People keep getting fatter because the general public is both nutritionally & scientifically illiterate. They get "soundbyte" diet advice which is often driven by marketing initiatives (bananas = potassium, OJ = vitamin C, salmon = Omega-3), advice which is technically true, but in context of a diverse diet, rather disingenuous as there are many common richer food sources. The public has a vague macronutritional idea (carbs, protein, fat), without the necessary subtleties to make truly wise choices. Micronutrients? Biochmeistry? Forget about it.The public erroneously equates looking skinny = "healthy" as though it is something aesthetic, not systemic. You can burn off soda & cheesecake if you excercise enough. You'll still get the diabetes eventually, even if you look good. So, until people take the time to get to know things more closely, until they learn to distinguish fad from fact, good science from diet superstitions... I fear we're all just going to keep getting unhealthier!

Would you like to lose weight, and be healthier? Don't diet, skip meals, or deprive yourself of goodies - simply eat a salad BEFORE you decide what to eat. It's good for you, fills you up and keeps you feeling full for longer then most foods.

MEMO TO EVERY INTELLIGENT FREE-THINKING AMERICAN, and TO OBAMA: CAP & TRADE IS PERHAPS THE MOST ANTI-FREE MARKET, ANTI-AMERICAN LEGISLATION EVER SERIOUSLY CONSIDERED BY CONGRESS. FURTHER, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO CREDIBLE EVIDENCE THAT ANYTHING WE DO WILL SUBSTANTIALLY CHANGE OR STOP "GLOBAL WARMING". FOR MILLIONS OF YEARS BEFORE MAN, THERE HAVE BEEN MAJOR NATURAL CYLES OF GLOBAL COOLING AND WARMING. DON'T ATTACK AND BURDEN THE AMERICAN BUSINESSES WHICH PROVIDE JOBS AND A HIGH STANDARD OF LIVING IN THE USA, FOR SOMETHING WHICH MAY "FEEL GOOD" BUT HAS NO CHANCE OF MAKING ANY REAL STATISTICAL DIFFERENCE IN GLOBAL WARMING. THIS WILL EXPORT EVEN MORE JOBS OUT OF AMERICA, ALL FOR ALMOST NO MEASURABLE CLIMATE IMPROVEMENT. CALL YOUR SENATOR. VOTE NO.

"Yet the dieting monkey looks many more years younger than his fatter, frumpier neighbor"_________________________________________________________Your job, decide the relative attractiveness of monkeys.I have a bad feeling that this is paid for by the taxpayers.
