LAS VEGAS (Feb. 11) — Sin City's mayor wants President Barack Obama to apologize for saying companies shouldn't visit Las Vegas on the taxpayer's dime.
Oscar Goodman spoke after a regular scheduled meeting with tourism officials where he expressed concern that federal lawmakers might be discouraging travel to the city.

"What's a better place, as I say, than for them to come here," Goodman told KLAS-TV. "And to change their mind and to go someplace else and to cancel — and at the suggestion of the president of the United States — that's outrageous."
Obama made the remarks Monday during a town hall meeting in Elkhart, Ind., where the president traveled to muster public support for economic stimulus legislation.
"You can't get corporate jets, you can't go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayer's dime," Obama said.
A White House spokesman said it was looking into the mayor's comments and did not have immediate comment.
Goodman said Obama's remarks at the town hall meeting were unwarranted.

A Presidency Begins
As President Barack Obama nears the 100-days mark in his presidency, he has a 69 percent approval rating, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. "That's outrageous, and he owes us an apology," he said. "He owes us a retraction."
Las Vegas tourism officials worry that increased scrutiny on business travel will discourage meetings and conventions — business that would be crucial for the city already suffering economically. The number of visitors to Las Vegas was down 4.4 percent in 2008 compared with a year earlier, and visits in December alone declined nearly 11 percent.
Late Monday, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. said it had moved a three-day conference from the Las Vegas Strip to San Francisco amid what the bank called a broad review of its activities. Goldman Sachs has accepted $10 billion in federal bailout funds.
Last week, Wells Fargo & Co., which received a $25 billion infusion, canceled a planned employee recognition conference in Las Vegas after an AP story reported on the trip and the bank received criticism from Capitol Hill that it was misusing the funds.

Hmmmm...I wonder is Obama read that prepared speech before he gave it? Seems to me that one large hunk of pork in his "stimulus package" oozed out millions of taxpayer's dollars to construct a high speed railroad in that neck of the woods. Sure looks like he is encouraging people to visit Las Vegas after all...and it's costing the American worker much more than a dime.

I would like to thank Obama for coming to Columbus, Ohio today to attend the ceremony of 25 police recruits that were laid off and now reinstated due to bail out money! This trip cost Columbus over $100,000.00 that the city dosent have. Thank god that the Arnold Fitness event is here because otherwise the public would have been more aware of this high cost of a 2 hour visit! By the way, our black mayor wants to tear down the City Center Mall the city purchased the mall for $1.00 which is now empty and build a park. Yeah I want to go downtown to a park and get shot, robbed or look at gang grafitti! Guess where this money to build this park is going to come from? I'll tell you this, the city of Columbus doesnt have the projected cost of 160,000.00 for this park and shops!

HHHMMMM well Obama said to cut back..yet he flies himself and the wife to Chicago(plus secret service details) and then eats at one of the most expensive restaurants there..at the taxpayers' expense..so far he's not doing what he's been preaching about for the last yr..he's spending lots of our tax dollars..seriously they could've spent the holiday in Washington..there's plenty of high class eateries there and would have saved the taxpayers some money..REMINDS ME OF OUR EX-GOV BLAGGIE..he took planes home and back to Springfield every weekend because the wifey refused to ever move into the Gov.'s mansion

Hay Mayor of Vagas! HE was not insulting your greedy decadent city. He was mocking the other greedy corporate criminals that stole our tax dolors in their rigged game of chance they played on the American people just like you do. So don't you worry it will not slow the visitation to that lame fake Disneyland for adults town. its people like you that took all the cool out of Vegas anyway and made it a place dorks and trashy white people go to pretend to be somebody. kinda sorta like you.

They listened to Obama and spent the money in San Francisco (isn't Pelosi from the Bay area?) instead of Las Vegas. Dirty politics!

It really comes down to greed and selfishness. I don't think Obama owes an apology, I don't think he has stated anything negative towards Las Vegas. I've never been there, and would LOVE to go! However, I'm not financially stable myself, I have a baby boy on the way (YAY!!) and I don't think anyone here or there would approve if I just decided, "Oh well, it is Spring Break, I just got loaned 2500.00 dollars to take care of my business with my wife and baby, to prepare for the future.....But I think I'm going to go to Vegas." I think this is what he is referring to, spending money on frivilous parties in a very expensive city known for its gambling the most. Had these companies not needed such funds to keep their companies alive, I'm sure they would have been told to have a good time in Vegas. But this wasn't their money they were planning on, this was OUR tax money. So, next time you're wondering where your tax money goes, just remember, it almost sent some already very rich peop...

i can see how residents of Las Vegas, as well as politicians and business people could take what Obama said as threatening and intimidating. But I don't feel he was saying to Not Go to Las Vegas, I feel that what he is trying to imply is that you don't RUN TO VEGAS, WHEN YOU OWE MONEY! i.e. - the taxpayers dime. He is referring to the corporations he gave government aid so that they wouldn't close down. And instead of using this money towards ensuring the growth and success of their company, they decided to go party with it in Vegas, as though they have not had any trouble. I understand that this may have been an annual party, but lets think about this. Would they have still been having that exec. party in Vegas, with only the bigwigs, if the bigwigs had no money to go there on? I think not. They would have closed, or better yet (sarcasm) they would have stayed open long enough to go to Vegas, then shut down because they got what they wanted.
