WASHINGTON -President Barack Obama has pledged to work with Senate Democrats "in any meaningful way he can" to help pass a health care overhaul.
That's what Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the president told Democratic senators in their closed-door meeting Sunday at the Capitol.
Reid said there are still issues that needs to be worked out on the sweeping legislation that is Obama's top domestic priority. Reid said the issues are being narrowed and Democrats are working toward a consensus. But the Nevada Democrat said, "We're not there."
Reid is disappointed by what he said was the Republicans' failure to make any kind of public statement in support of advancing health care legislation.
Reid said Obama told Democrats that there hasn't been an issue such as this since the creation of Social Security.
