DAVIS, Calif. (May 6) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says it's time for a debate on whether to legalize marijuana, though he says he's not supporting the idea.
Schwarzenegger spoke Tuesday in Davis during an event to promote wildfire safety. The Republican governor, whose term in office expires at the end of next year, was asked about the idea of treating pot like alcohol.

"No, I don't think it's time for that, but I think it's time for a debate," he said. "And I think we ought to study very carefully what other countries are doing that have legalized marijuana and other drugs, what effect it had on those countries, and are they happy with that decision."
The governor's comments came days after a statewide Field Poll found that 56 percent of California voters support the idea of legalizing marijuana for recreational use and taxing its proceeds.
Democratic state Assemblyman Tom Ammiano says legalizing marijuana for adults over age 21 and taxing it at $50 per ounce would bring the state more than $1 billion a year. He has a bill in the Legislature but has delayed seeking approval until next year.
Schwarzenegger warned against making potentially harmful decisions just to raise money and said some countries that have decriminalized pot have had negative experiences.
California became the first state to legalize the medical use of marijuana in 1996. A dozen other states now have similar laws.

British Medical Studies show that Marijuana does far more damage to the lungs than tobacco. British Medical Studies also show that Marijuana Smokers are 40 percent more likely to have psychiatric problems. Thus I do NOT support the use of matijuana as a recreational drug under any circumstance. Having said that, Medical science also shows that Marijuana reduces the pressure in eyeballs of those who suffer with glaucoma. Marijuana also gives people "the munchies." Thus Marijuana may be useful for the treatment of patients who have Anorexia, or Bulemia. Therefore, I would support the use of Marijuana for the Medical Treatment of the above. Marijuana has also been described as "Weed". Yep, Marijuana grows rapidly especially when watered. Marijuana in our farm fields would be mixed into our food sources of grain, meat and poultry products, thus getting everyone high. This is precisely why the Democrat Controlled House and Senate banned Marijuana in 1937 during Democrat President Franklin D...

You legalize marijuana and American kids in science technology will be the stupidest in this universe. Try to hire these doped-up zombies in the Defense Department and America will be in outer space. This country will collapse 100 times faster than expected. Every ethic and moral principle has been wiped-out and pushed aside by hungry politicians who want their pockets full of money. Is it not the same way the Roman Empire collapsed? or the Ottoman Empire? or the Byzantine empire? or the Austro-Hungurian empire?

Gov Arnold is a complete idiot and fool. All he wants to do is tax and tax more. Well with the highest unemployment and highest taxes in the land, you can't squeeze any more out of a turnip. Taxes is not the answer -- Sacramento needs to STOP spending, cut program --- that's what ordinary people do when they don't have enough money. Wake up Sacramento, cut your perks, cut your salaries, cut programs -- hello --- feel the pain the rest of the state does. Sick of politicans that have no idea what the state is going through. I know one way to really save money ---- stop all the freebies to the illegals -- that alone with save our schools and hospitals. CA cannot afford all that we do to support illegals that are breaking the law being here and because of our failure to "enforce" our laws.It will be a very rude awakening when the tax propositions don't pass on May 19th, because Californians are sending a message -- lawmakers stop spending --- stop everything -- stop spending !...

california could make 10-15 billion dollars a year if they grew it and sold it plus it would take the money out the dealers/gangs pockets and that would be huge cause they use weed as a starter then take the money from that and buy harder drugs to sell and guns, if they legalize it and tax the hell out of it people would just continue to go to the corner dealer.....Lcat222 would you rather have a drunk next to you, weed does even come close to impairing judgement like alcohol does think about it

Marijuana is the least harmful and most beneficial "drug" on the planet. Even aspirin and acetaminophen have led to more deaths per year than marijuana. Marijuana cannot even be directly linked to ANY deaths, it is only hypothesized that in some cases people have died as a result of cardiovascular complications after using marijuana. In a 10 year period, the 17 most popular PHARMACEUTICAL DRUGS on the market, accounted for 11,687 deaths where the drug was either the primary or secondary suspect in the cause of death. VIAGRA alone accounted for 2,294 of those deaths. Marijuana accounted for 0 primary cases of death and 279 secondary suspected deaths during the same time period. So drugs that help you get your weenie up are way more dangerous than this one that gets you high.

Ever heard of Carl Sagan? Probably not, judging by your apparent lack of education. Carl Sagan was a famous astronomer/mathematician who used weed regularly. In fact, he solved a most difficult mathematical problem that he'd been having problems solving, only after using weed.
