Sharks Draw Near Horde of Swimmers

(March 17) -- About 700 swimmers taking part in a race Sunday off Sydney, Australia, seemed oblivious that danger was lurking just a stone's throw away. A hammerhead shark was swimming near them, and another, smaller shark was in the water under them.
This video below, from ITN, captures the drama. The camera was able to pick up the hammerhead, but it wasn't able to get an image of the other interloper.

Most of the competitors appeared to be unaware of the sharks' presence. Race winner Chris Allan did see authorities put up a shark signal as he was swimming, but he seemed to take it in stride. "I figure [the sharks] had 700 of us to choose from and they couldn't decide, by the looks of things," he told ITV.com.
The gallery below includes three shots from the race. Keep clicking for photos from recent and notable shark attacks, including information on a spate of attacks earlier this year off Australia's coast.

Still haven't had your fill of shark news? You might want to take a look at a story we pulled together late last week about a controversy over a fisherman who killed a tiger shark after a two-hour struggle in the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana.

Shooting the shark would have bloodied the water and brought many other sharks I think. The ocean is their environment. That's why I stay on the beach.

ps760, The shark, was at home. So you think, they are suppose to shoot the Shark and get rid of the problem. Try swimming in a pool. Sharks have a right to exist in their natural environment... Humans are so arrogant and selfish... Oh, just kill the animal, because they are in their own environment...

Swimming in the keys with my son, A nine foot bull shark came right at my gut, I went to kick the **** right in his freakin nose when all of a sudden he opened his eyes, and become aware that I wasn't a fish or whatever the hell the **** thought I was. The shark jolted sharply to my right, and with one swing from his fin was gone. My son was panic striken, and I had to calm him down to get him back into the boat. My wife was still swimming in the ocean with friends, I yelled for her to get back into the boat as she was completely oblivious to the 9 footer in the area, as were the others. Eventually they all got back in the boat safely, after a good bit of coaxing from my son, and myself. Seems like those ***** in the water get honed in on some type of magnetic field that sends them into an attack mode, at least so it seemed so from this one particular experience that I had. I'm just glad it wasn't a great white.

People venture off into wild animal domain, and then get freaked out when stuff like this happens. Humans don't belong in the ocean, and animals don't belong in captivity... So when you put two and two together it's no surprise people get attacked.
