(July 10) - A popular science teacher at an English Catholic school has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly beating a 14-year-old student on the head with a metal weight, British media said Friday.
Peter Harvey, 49, allegedly "snapped" and attacked Jack Waterhouse before a packed classroom at the All Saints Roman Catholic Comprehensive School in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, The Telegraph reported.

Teachers in Trouble
Peter Harvey, a popular science teacher at a Catholic school in Nottinghamshire, England, was charged with attempted murder Friday for allegedly beating a student on the head with a metal object. Harvey apparently lost control Wednesday after a student swore during a physics lesson. According to some accounts, Jack tried to intervene. Harvey allegedly picked up a metal measuring weight and began beating Jack on the head.
Two other pupils, a boy and girl, tried to come to Jack's aid and suffered minor injuries, the reports said.
Police and paramedics called to the scene found Jack lying in a pool of blood. The teenager was hospitalized in serious but stable condition Friday, the BBC said.
"Obviously, the whole class is traumatized. People send their children here from great distances because of its academic record and what happened is very much out of character for the school," Nottinghamshire Police Detective Superintendent Adrian Pearson told The Times of London newspaper.

A Preventable Crime? Prosecutors asked that a judge lock up Isaiah M.K. Kalebu, who was out on bail pending trial for charges he threatened to kill his mother, after a suspicious fire at his aunt's house killed two people. Six days later, on July 19, authorities say Kalebu stabbed a 39-year-old woman to death. For that alleged crime, a judge set the bail at $10 million on July 25.

Harvey, who is married and has two daughters at the school, had recently returned to work after being on sick leave for a stress-related condition, the Daily Mail said.
Former students described Harvey as an excellent teacher who was very popular with his pupils.
"I was never a fan of science, so it was a miracle I had Mr. Harvey. He's absolutely hilarious and inspires confidence in even the least scientifically minded," one wrote on the Rate My Teacher Web site.
Others wrote that Harvey made class fun and that "no other science teacher could compare."
"He was the best," one grad wrote.

This is an awful story. It sounds like he could have very easily killed the child. When you hit someone on the head with a heavy object, chances are pretty good you're going to do serious harm. There are a lot of different ways to "snap", but people who beat on kids shouldn't be allowed to be around kids.

THAT TEACHER IS A COWARD CHILD BEATER. YOU CAN SHOW YOUR BLEEDING HEARTS ALL YOU WANT, BUT WHEN WE SEND OUR KIDS TO SCHOOL WE HAVE AN EXPECTATION OF SAFETY. ZERO TOLERANCE MEANS NO ONE GETS TO HARM OR THREATEN HARM. THAT TEACHER NEEDS TO SPEND THE NEXT 20 YEARS IN PRISON THINKING ABOUT TRYING TO KILL A CHILD, HIS STUDENT. NO MERCY FOR THIS KIND OF BEHAVIOR.

Whatever the problem that stressed this teacher out to take a leave, should've been evaluated before he was ready to return to work, and he should've been put in an office, or a lower grade, as it may have been too much in his midlife, where hormones are changing, as are they raging hormones in Junior High Level and the two may have clashed.

Students whom have violently attacked teachers or other students, what happens to them, suspension, court perhaps, first offense, slap on the wrist, put in the parents custody, made to go to counseling, and/or returns to school or is transferred out, but a teacher may be defending themselves, will ultimately be the one charged in a violent act for touching the student. If in fact this teacher did snap, hit the student deliberately, he certainly deserves to lose his job, but if this is self defense, sorry, the student too, needs to be charged! The teachers do need to stand up for their right to teach without fear of reprisals or that the student will attack them and the parent will blame the teacher instead of making their child responsible for their actions. No one has the right to abuse another in anyway, verbally, physically, mentally, emotionally, intellectually, financially, sexually, or socially! Those offenders do need to pay for their actions!!! Should they be minor ch...

Okay, one more time. ANOTHER kid was the trouble maker and the kid that got beaten was intervening. Two more kids came to his aid and got hurt as well. The teacher was liked and amiable, BUT had been on recent leave due to STRESS RELATED issues. Obviously he was not out of the woods and something in him snapped. He has gone from well-liked to nuts. He is ill. He should not have come back this soon or maybe at all to teach in school. The kids were victims. This is a sad situation all around.

When I was in Catholic School many years ago, the Nuns would physically kick any kids azz that got out of line, and If you went home complaining, your parents would whip it again. With that being said, I can also say the only fear we had of going to school was showing up with incomplete homework. This teacher looks like he is unstable from his picture, but I bet that fowl mouth kid was at the root of unhinging the man for some time. To bad he didn't knock him senseless.
