Senator John McCain joined his fellow Republicans to vote to maintain a filibuster on the minimum wage hike. This is clearly a vote to win him financial backing and support from the elites, but it is one that should come back to haunt him in his Presidential bid.A hike in the minimum wage is supported by at least 75% of Americans -- that number includes a large percentage of Republicans. And it's an issue you can use to win -- as Sherrod Brown learned in Ohio, a state where I'm guessing McCain will want to perform well.
2008 will likely be the year when the rightwing economic vision and electoral reality collide into eachother. This vote is a clear example of how that will happen.

61. I am a registered Democrat and even I can see the folly of raising the mininum wage. No one these days (at least in Tulsa, OK) works for minimum wage. Even McDonald's starts 16 year old kids out higher than $5.15. Our economy is on the rise and higher wages will fall in place with MOST (albeit not all) of employers. Without tax breaks and special incentatives for small business owners a minumum wage raise will negatively effect our economy, John McCain is on the right side of this debate regardless of what it does to his presidential status.

62. McCain is dead anyway, we conservatives don't like him because he is too far left on social issues. Rudi G. or Newt will win in 2008 unless things improve for Dubya, in which case Jeb should be drafted.

63. Sure it would be nice to raise the minimum wage but who do you think will pay for it? The consumers of course! So does everyone want to pay more for their products. It sounds good on the suface but someone has to absorb that extra cost and it will be us.

64. The minimum wage hike is a joke and always has been. The only people even making mimimum wage are students and kids. Almost every employee ALREADY pays MORE than the minimum wage. The undereducated of this country understand NOTHING about economics so they will AUTOMATICALLY ( and stupidly) THINK that this will help the poor when in fact, all it will do will be to raise the ages of a very small portion of American workers and RAISE the cost of products to the REST of the consumers in the country. All minimum wage hikes do is REdistribute money from the AVERAGE American to a few working students and , in many cases, ILLEGAL aliens. It is nothing but SOCIALISM disguised as "charity". Minimum wage hikes are a SCAM designed to get more votes from more morons. This SCAM is just ONE of the MANY scumbag, underhanded PLOYS that the SOCIALIST DEMOCRATS use to harm Americans and the American economy. Morons will disagree with me, I expect this coming from the IGNORANT masses who would rather watch an MTV episode then to read a DAMN book and LEARN something about economics and how SOCIALISM will KILL this country.
P.S. I will NOT be coming back to this site to see the moronic comments that will argue with the FACTS that I've posted here. Carry on you poor ignorant boobs.

65. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE ANY PERSON THAT VOTES AGAINST A LARGER MINIMUM WAGE LIVE ON LESS THAN $200 A WEEK AFTER TAXES, NO MEDICAL INSURANCE AND LIVING ALONE AND TRYING TO SURVIVE COSTS. THEY SHOULD TRY TO LIVE LIKE THAT FOR 6 MONTHS AND THEN TAKE A VOTE.
THINK AMERICA WHERE WE ARE HEADED. THE MIDDLE CLASS IS SHRINKING. YOU ARE RICH OR YOU ARE GOING POOR

66. John McCain has prooved once againg that he is one of the last of a dieing breed of political dinosaurs. A breed of old white men who are for anyting big business and against anything pro worker. To take part in a fillabuster against raising the minimum wage is disgusting. My solution is to make every senator and member of congress work for minimum ages with no health insurance for one year and see how quickly they change their tune.If anyone out there thinks that John McCain or any other politition has their best interst at heart they are either dilusional or ignorant or both.

67. I've been making minimum wage for almost 40 years. I'm not qualified to do anything else. No raises are ever given. I have a steady job and I like it very much. But the world just keeps going by me. Getting more and more expensive and it is harder and harder to eat properly on the amount of money I make. I have no benefits or health insurance. I'm 55 years old. Do people think that only young people are the ones making minimum wage?

68. The truth about McCAIN is far different from the SPIN and fable version.FIRST, McCAIN is a bad ACTOR trying to portray himself as a war hero which he knows is complete fictional bullshit.HE was bombing and killing innocent civilians, mostly women and children in HANOIfrom 30,000ft,when shot down. HE was immediately groveling to his captors because he is a coward to begin with. THEY broke him easily and he signed a COMPLETE WAR CRIMES CONFESSION. THEN he becomes a POLITICIAN werein being completely full of shit is a major asset. HE is a AMIABLE LIKEABLE CHARACTER, that is true, but his BRAIN and SOUL have been gone for years. I HOPE this SENILE IDIOT DOES NOT GET ANYWHERE NEAR THE WHITE HOUSE

69. John McCain has become a Waffler Extraordinaire. It is disappointing to say the least, that his main focus is on raising funds for his potential election campaign rather than on what is good for the country. but alas, I believe that it is for naught. there is no way that he will get the Republican Parties nomination. They are just using him. I could never vote for him.

70. It sounds good coming from Slick Willie polititians, but do you know anyone making minimum wage? It's high school kids and young adults learning a trade or skill. People, if you look at the economy at large and undrstand economics, this is a major facad put on by the Democrat elites to pose as the common man's keeper. But the reality is the minimum wage hike hurts 80% of American businesses who have to contend with mountains of Government compliance. It's hard to hire workers and make a living. The only results from this will be hire prices for the consumer and/or fired workers. Wake up!
Gary at 4:15PM on Jan 24th 2007
71. That a boy John! You always had my vote, no even more so then before. Minimum wage hikes do nothing but raise prices on consumer goods and force more dependence on foriegn goods.
Deano at 4:19PM on Jan 24th 2007
72. Here is a non-issue made into a gimmick by the Dems. Most states have a minimum wage standard. Remember the Federal standard is just the minimum not the maximum. Democratic states like NY and NJ can and have already passed state legislation requiring a higher minimum wage. Why did Nancy Pelosi and the dems exempt Somoa from their wage bill? Because it would be bad for business in Somoa that has a 25% unemployment rate and depends on two businesses for most of its employment? If its bad for Somoa is good for business here in the states? As usual you don't get the truth and nothing but the truth from the dems but instead half truths and hidden agenda's.

73. People always say they want politicians to do the right thing rather than follow the polls, but when someone like McCain opposes the latest "feel good" idea, he is criticized.
The House minimum wage bill should have been named "The Unemployment Increase for Poor Kids and Subsidy to Middle Class Kids to Buy More iPod Music Act of 2007". Democrats don't seem able to understand that the important thing for young people to get that first job, even at low wages. Yes, some who will benefit (less than half) are working poor people with families, and I want to help them, too. But there was a better way....expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit.
Dan at 4:18PM on Jan 24th 2007
74. You minimum wage hike supporters have no clue what problems you will create!
Why not make it $15 an hour or $25 an hour? Wouldn't everyone be better off making $50 an hour?
One main reason our economy has continued to grow and support higher wages for everyone is the low level of inflation. Let the government start mandating higher prices and just listen for the sound of brakes squealing as our economy comes to a screeching halt!!!!

75. Though Mr McCain is to be respected for coming
back normal from his arduous time as a POW, I
caould never vote for him. He is like a sapling
bows to the stresses of whatever weather fronts
come on the scene.
I cannot believe that anyone would want to vote
into office a man who will be so old. Yeah, I
know Reagan was elected at an older age, but there
was always talk about his nodding off or not
really being "with it".
Also, with so many folks living at or near the
poverty level while big business, which is
supposed to "trickle down" its success to the
masses, pays their top officers salaries and
benefit packages that are obscene, it is hard
for me to see why anyone would vote for any
Republican. Yeah, I know there are ultrarich
members of the Democratic party, but if you looked
long enough and hard enough the greater amount of
these high-priced moguls would be Republicans.
This nation needs to focus on domestic well-being.
Homeland security funds have been squandered in
many instances. Katrina and other federal relief
efforts have shown how much fraud there can be
and how providers of services also have their hands in the big, deep pockets of Uncle Sam. Then,
there are the providers of support services to the
armed forces who fleece our government. When my
father was in the military during WWII, the army
provided all or most of the support services for
themselves with enlisted or drafted personnel.
Does Hallibuton, in all of its various forms think
that the U.S. Treasury is its own little oyster?
And some people want to prevent a raised in the
minimum wage. SHAME ON THEM!!!!
