The best man for the Republican nomination isn't even running. Former senator and current fictitious district attorney on Law and Order, Fred Thompson is by far the best candidate.
His resume consists of a law degree from Vanderbilt university, Assistant US District Attorney, worked on the Watergate hearings, served as special counsel to Lamar Alexander when he was Governor of Tennessee and eventually was elected to finish out Al Gore's term in the Senate in the biggest landslide in Tennessee history and was reelected to a complete term in 1996.
He decided not to run in 2002, he was a sure winner had he decided to pursue another term. He instead went back to acting and has played the DA's role on L & A for several years now.
He's a people person and a Conservative.
He's brilliant as shown when he absolutely eviscerated uber-lib Mike Farrell in 1993 on Meet the Press. He's not afraid to speak his mind as he did last week when talking about the changes in strategy on the Iraq War:
I'll bet that a lot of folks who support the president on this are asking themselves "what if we'd taken care of business this way two years ago?"
So, Thompson has kept his toes in the water by assisting President Bush in getting John Roberts confirmed and writes at NRO on a regular basis. He's recognizable, has no discernible baggage and would be a commanding presence in the White House. Let's face it, at 6' 6" and with great pipes, the guy looks and sounds presidential.

16. I agree, Fred Thompson would get my vote.. I often wondered over the years, why the most appropiate person for this tremendous position is either too above playing the games needed to get there, or doesn't have the personality to attract the backing or the votes.

17. I had the priviledge as an Honor Guard and Posted the U.S. Flag, at one of his speaches when he was running for the senate.
I was very impressed with him then, and told him that I thought he should run for President.
I sure wish he would, I'd do all I could to help him.

18. I've watched mr thompson on tv and in movies. I've also watched him work his stuff in the senate. What I got from him as a senator is that he was honest and straight forward. During the clinton admin, he did not always side with the republicans. This tells me he knows when to break with the party if they are wrong! He would make a good president, but people like rush limbaugh would make sure republicans don't vote for him--he's too close to the center.

20. The earth needs an American president with a certain centrism: balancing global vision and domestic security and straight talk. Such a person would need to have what matches with Senator Fred Thompson's experience and insight. He is smart - e.g., he has stayed active at the AMerican enterprise Institite in what subject? China, intel on China! His second marriage is in its 5th year. He has what it takes in head and heart. He has the capacity in his gut, but it will take a grassroots campaign as diverse as the first 15 on this response to get his attention. Overriding are his communication skills and I see no one on the GOP horizon who even comes close. Character, acumen and communication: Thompson works for me. And a person of the law to help reign in a brigade of lawyers and judges who want to diminish the uniqueness of the U.S. Constitution by importing rulings from every Tom, Dick and Harry country on earth.
Go, Fred, Go! For a Smarter America!

21. I've long thought that Sen. Thompson could be a great President. I felt that his shepherding the Supreme Court nomination was his putting a little toe back in the water. It went well. How do we convince him to give this more serious thought. Not worried about the L&O connection. That series is about played out. He'll need a new role soon.

22. Please. I like the guy as an actor and seems like a decent, intellegent man. But you're going to sell me Fred Thompson as president on his winning a debate with B.J. Honeycutt a decade ago?
Turn off the television.

24. I would certainly vote for him! Especially if it ended up between Hillary or Obama on the other side!

25. FRED WHO?
David at 12:15PM on Jan 27th 2007
26. Fred Thompson could wage a successful Presidential 2008 campaign for Unity08. He could comment on Nancy Pelosi in Iraq as America United to succeed and solve the Iraq war problem. Fred appeals to both liberal and conservative. He could bring American together to speak with one voice on international matters vital to the U.S.A.

27. Free Trader. Think massive outsourcing of American Jobs. Defender of One Side Trade Deals with the USA always being on the not getting much side. Insourcer. Defends Amnesty. Had enough of those types? Ignore the Slime job AOL did on Duncan Hunter. He built the Border Fence that Works. Every Day. The AOL Elites desise him for that. The Border Patrol Agents shot a drug dealer who had a million dollars worth of drugs in his van (most immigrants drive across the border in their nice van?)They shot him in the left buttocks and the picture is all over the web. The evidence suppressed and covered up seems to be in the DA's office. And the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals just acquited another Border Patrol Agent, David Snipes for the same reasons. The Texas Border DA hid evidence, paid witnesses with Social Security cards and money, hid the criminal record of the defendant. Same things wrong with Ramos and Campeion. And other Border Patrol aGents still in jail All of the DA's are former associates of Bush and Gonzales. How come AOL is in bed with that team?

28. As a lifelong conservative RepublicanLet's, let's draft Fred Thompson; absolutely the best choice for our party.
Neal Marcot at 10:37AM on Jan 29th 2007
29. This country not only needs someone who acts presidential...but looks "presidential"! As a disenchanted Republican, only Fred Thompson could save the party and get my vote!
