The best man for the Republican nomination isn't even running. Former senator and current fictitious district attorney on Law and Order, Fred Thompson is by far the best candidate.
His resume consists of a law degree from Vanderbilt university, Assistant US District Attorney, worked on the Watergate hearings, served as special counsel to Lamar Alexander when he was Governor of Tennessee and eventually was elected to finish out Al Gore's term in the Senate in the biggest landslide in Tennessee history and was reelected to a complete term in 1996.
He decided not to run in 2002, he was a sure winner had he decided to pursue another term. He instead went back to acting and has played the DA's role on L & A for several years now.
He's a people person and a Conservative.
He's brilliant as shown when he absolutely eviscerated uber-lib Mike Farrell in 1993 on Meet the Press. He's not afraid to speak his mind as he did last week when talking about the changes in strategy on the Iraq War:
I'll bet that a lot of folks who support the president on this are asking themselves "what if we'd taken care of business this way two years ago?"
So, Thompson has kept his toes in the water by assisting President Bush in getting John Roberts confirmed and writes at NRO on a regular basis. He's recognizable, has no discernible baggage and would be a commanding presence in the White House. Let's face it, at 6' 6" and with great pipes, the guy looks and sounds presidential.

31. Fred thompson would be an instant frontrunner and probably represents the biggest nightmare the Dems could imagine. Not only would he attract all the conservative votes, he would draw votes from those who don't pay much attention to politics, and from those who may disagree with him but like him nonetheless. Imagine the debates. Imagine the audience those debates would attract. Picture Hilary being removed from the stage with a spatula.
Run Fred, run!

33. I don't think there is a more qualified CONSERVATIVE to run for President in 2008. If he runs, he would literally be saving the Republican Party, which I've already left because it is full of corrupt politicians which I really can't distinguish any more from the liberals. I'll vote Constitution Party Line until Republicans can find their backbones again and stand for the issues that we elected them on. I knew all was about to be lost in the Republican Party when they misrepresented the information in their surveys that we all filled out, to fit their own re-election agenda and not the people. And yes, there are some wacky principles in the Constition Party, but at least they're sticking by them. Fred Thompson, we need your honesty, integrity and above all your attitude. What ever happened to the straight shooters? We didn't elect George Bush to all of a sudden go soft and get all touchy feely with the liberals, we know that doesn't work. His dad tried it, and the liberals tore him apart. George did it, and he is currently being deboned. And isn't there anyone out there besides the honorable Tankredo who knows that enforcing the border and deporting illegals is right and moral? I don't want to hear our elected officials say we can't deport 12 million illegals. We can and we better. If we don't start enforcing our laws NOW, we're done for. How can you ask our kids to fight our wars to protect our sovereignty if you can't protect the very basis of that sovereignty, our borders? Does no one ever learn? Conservatism and only conservatism will save this country.

36. I've had a Fred Thompson candidacy on my mind for the past two months but didn't know where I could express my opinion.
I think he has the experience, the personality, the respect of the American people, and the right approach to government to be ab excellent president.
Besides, I think he could win.

38. Senator Thompson,
Our nation and the world is at a pinacle in history like never before. I have long thought that you are the only man for the job. I think Ronald Reagan was the greatest President of my lifetime. I think you will be better. As President of the United States you are also Leader of the Free World.........WE NEED YOU AND NO ONE ELSE WILL DO! RUN!
Vernon R. Bush Jr. at 8:12PM on Mar 2nd 2007
39. Absolutely--Fred Thompson would be a great President. The comparison to Reagan is obvious and go big with the voters.

40. He would have my support and vote. Like many others before me in the post, I have watched him for years and felt strongly that he would make an awesome president. I like his no nonsense approach. He calls it like he sees it, which is pretty well how I see things. I like his stance on many social issues and I feel he would make the tough decisions that need to be made, without fear of the polls or political fall out. THOMPSON FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!!

41. If Fred will run he "WILL" be the next President. I predict a landslide victory. The people are sick and tired of Washington. Fred has what it takes to get the job done.

44. My wife and I were excited for the first time in the pre-presedential eletion period when we heard Fred Thompson was considering a run for the Presidency. We not only would vote for him, we would give our money, which we have never done for any candidate. Senator Thompson would draw the conservative vote and the moderate vote. He is intelligent, experienced, and a great speaker and debater. We want to know how to get word to Senator Thompson that There are people who want him in this race!
Terry Weaver at 8:48PM on Mar 3rd 2007
45. Fred Thompson would be a very strong candidate. Does he have the drive? A big problem is passing the word that he has a ton of supporters out there. How to get that info to him? No website I am able to find.
