Thanks to this post at ElephantBiz, it's now obvious that all current GOP candidates will blow away and Fred Thompson will step in to save the day. OK it's not that obvious, but there are many admirers of the former senator from Tennessee, including this Web site.
Hotline on Call quotes the WH Bulletin:
Thompson, the former Tennessee Republican senator who's now a Law & Order prosecutor and regular replacement for radio host Paul Harvey, is being urged by supporters to consider entering the presidential race, according to associates. "The draft Fred movement is growing," says one ally. They say that Thompson is flattered by the suggestions, but it is unclear if he is turning away their appeals. The effort is growing among conservative blogs, where several boards are pushing the folksy straight-talker to get in.But then throws cold water all over the idea:
Most importantly, Sen. John McCain is one of Thompson's best friends. They talk regularly. A source close to Thompson said that Thompson will not run for president, period. But what if McCain faded? This is more a symptom of certain conservatives in the party looking at the current field and realizing that there is no conservative hero among them. The only solution then is to draft one. Huckabee and Brownback don't have the stature and gravitas that Fred Thompson exudes without even trying. Unfortunately Senator Thompson has never indicated much of a desire to be president.
If McCain fades sure, Thompson could step in but don't bet on it. what I'm wondering is that given Rudy's liberal record on things, will there be a conservative Stop Rudy campaign coalescing to draft a champion? Just because conservatives can handle Rudy's liberal values doesn't mean they like it. All things equal, they'd rather have Rudy's qualities plus a social conservative as well.
Fred Thompson may not be the only one to face a draft.

16. Your story failed to mention anything that Thompson represents. I assume he's anti-abortion, anti-gay, anti-immigration, pro-anywar that helps out the biggest corporations, etc. etc. but it's hard to tell. Those of us in the frozen and snow-socked northlanf haven't heard of him. I and 55% of the country will only vote for someone who will get us out of this budget mess, meaning will get us out of Iraq, meaning start withdrawing now and getting it done by a reasonable time horizon, and stop the US taxpayers (that's you and me Pastor Dan) footing the bill for the oil companies' wars. And Pastor Dan, please stop parroting that disproven fallacy that the Islamicists are out to get you. I know plenty of Muslims and they're more or less like you and me and just want to live in peace. I'll grant you that some of them in the middle east do get a bit ticked when we invade their countries for oil.

17. FRED THOMPSON IS A VERY SMART MAN, SO DO NOT EXPECT HIM TO HAVE THE HUGE EGO REQUIRED TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT. HE LEFT THE SENATE BECAUSE HE WAS DISGUSTED WITH THE SENATE'S RULES, WHICH MAKE THAT BODY ALMOST USELESS. HE REALIZED THAT ITS RULES CONTRIBUTE TO AMERICANS' FIERCE DISLIKE FOR THE WASHINGTON ESTABLISHMENT.

18. I would be inclined to go for the candidate that most represents ALL the issues I consider relevant.
Fred Thompson has the "gravitas" to become a decent President. He knows the way the gonvernment runs. So does John Mc Cain, Newt Gingrich, Obama, Clinton, Giuliana and the others from both sides of the aisle. None of them seem hard headed to an extreme, but I believe most of them are open to thoughtful debate.
Whether we like it or not, we have a problem with radicals from the Middle East, who most remind me of the Nazi and Fascist movements of the 1930's, which lead to WW2. These radicals are bringing their craziness into our society. I'm not interested in blaming anyone. I AM interested in methods to solve this problem. To me that problem will not be solved by people who are single issue oriented.
We have a Constitutional system of checks and balances in place, which moderates any candidate's adjenda. If the candidate announces issues they want addressed, they have to have a
Legislature -- vis a vie "The People" (and Court) in league with them. I can't count the number of viable candidates who have been rejected because of single issues.

19. Back before Fred Thompson became a movie and TV star, I was deeply impressed by his legislative record and the leadership he provided in committee. I would be very pleased if he would present himself for President, and give the people a chance to choose him.
It is well-understood by every thinking American that the Presidency is a job that can wear you out, physically and psychologically. Few have been able to handle it with at least one incident that reflects that fact.
But when a person is so able and trustworthy as to be sought as a candidate, that person should be willing to respond to the call, lest the opportunity to assist his nation and its people be passed by in favor of his own hesitancy to face the trials of office.

20. #7 Robert, if Obama had gone in front of a pro- Israel group and told them he was going after Iran. It would have been on every news show out there. Since I have not heard or read it anywhere, you need to take that garbage to the dump. Obama could not sound like Bush on his worse day. As a matter of fact no one running could sound that dumb. I love law and order, but I would have to know where Thompson stands on the issues.

21. It is the best news I've heard. He is a breath of fresh air.

23. We in New Hampshire are waiting for a guy like Fred. It,s early yet so the primary is far from over.

24. MY OBSERVATIONS ARE THESE.
1) I don't think Mr. Thompson wants to subject himself to that scrutiny of a election. Seems like a very private person.
There is always something about every candidate that people aren't going to like.
Rudy says personally he is pro-life in that he would rather have a child be born then put up for adoption but won't deny a woman's right to choose
He would appoint strict constructionist judges not judges who would make up their own law on the bench
We all know about his stance on terror is and what he did in New York after 9/11.
He believes in tough border control and anti-illegal immigration laws.
That's the best I see out there now who has a ghost of a chance to win.

25. I enjoy Mr. Thompson on Law & Order and also when he subs for Paul Harvey. He seems to have a great way with words, gets his point accros without worring about being PC, and he sounds like he knows what the "average" American is thinking.

26. Lol! Lynne, you're an idiot. And so are all of you bone headed, anti Christian, traitorous liberals. You don't have a clue about what needs to be done to secure the future for all of humanity. All you see is what's directly in front of your face and if it doesn't have anything to do with basic hedonism, child sex or homosexuality then you don't want to have anything at all to do with it. You, the liberals/democrats, are as much the enemy as are the terrorists we're fighting in the Middle East. The same terrorists we'll be fighting right here on our own soil if we bring the troops home.

27. I've been advocating the candidacy of Fred Dalton Thompson for several months now. I've written about this subject on several blogs and gotten favorable responses everytime. Sen. Thompson has the presence, stature, intellect and knowledge of federal government and international politics to command respect from his countrymen and foreign governments alike.
America needs a leader who can restore faith in our system of government and our objectives worldwide. Fred's the man to do just that. America deserves respect. Fred can bring that back. America needs unity. Is there someone other than Fred Thompson who can restore that? I think not. I only wish some of his close friends could convey many Americans' wish that he would step forward and once again serve his country. Fred, we need you now. Fred Dalton Thompson for President of the United States of America!

29. I'm a Democrate but with the field we have I would vote for Mr Thompson. But wish he would run on third party ticket. The other two are so broken they can't be saved. And America and the world can't take much more of this.

30. Sharon, while it is true that some muslims want to live in peace just like us, but how about the fanatics who already murdered more than three thousands on 9/11? And they were not alone. There are so many like them whose aim is to kill us. Just tune in to what these people say on the Arab TV Al Jazeera. Would you give up fighting them overseas? Then be prepared to fight them here!
