Thanks to this post at ElephantBiz, it's now obvious that all current GOP candidates will blow away and Fred Thompson will step in to save the day. OK it's not that obvious, but there are many admirers of the former senator from Tennessee, including this Web site.
Hotline on Call quotes the WH Bulletin:
Thompson, the former Tennessee Republican senator who's now a Law & Order prosecutor and regular replacement for radio host Paul Harvey, is being urged by supporters to consider entering the presidential race, according to associates. "The draft Fred movement is growing," says one ally. They say that Thompson is flattered by the suggestions, but it is unclear if he is turning away their appeals. The effort is growing among conservative blogs, where several boards are pushing the folksy straight-talker to get in.But then throws cold water all over the idea:
Most importantly, Sen. John McCain is one of Thompson's best friends. They talk regularly. A source close to Thompson said that Thompson will not run for president, period. But what if McCain faded? This is more a symptom of certain conservatives in the party looking at the current field and realizing that there is no conservative hero among them. The only solution then is to draft one. Huckabee and Brownback don't have the stature and gravitas that Fred Thompson exudes without even trying. Unfortunately Senator Thompson has never indicated much of a desire to be president.
If McCain fades sure, Thompson could step in but don't bet on it. what I'm wondering is that given Rudy's liberal record on things, will there be a conservative Stop Rudy campaign coalescing to draft a champion? Just because conservatives can handle Rudy's liberal values doesn't mean they like it. All things equal, they'd rather have Rudy's qualities plus a social conservative as well.
Fred Thompson may not be the only one to face a draft.

331. I remember him well as a senator and he was outstanding. Let's vote him in! The other Republicans are lackluster , except for Mitt Romney. Let's put him and Fred together.

334.
Fred Thompson demonstrates the right stuff. What troubles me is how so many people "think" the war in Iraq was a mistake. How we handled the "liberation" and "occupation" could have resulted in a sudden "victory" but too many were "yelling" that it was all a mistake and watered down our ability to deal with the problems by encouraging the "enemy" like the pacifists during the Viet Nam era, e.g. John Kerry.
One of the biggest mistakes was probably in our failure to recognize how the "terrorist" within the country could overwhelm our ability to control the "looting" and destruction of the remaining infrastructure. Just like the democrats and their desire to regain their power to corrupt our social system, the "terrorists" will do anything to regain their position of power and authority.
Until the power mad people who desire to "make" people do what they want either change their ways or are brought under control, the divisions between good and evil will continue.
As for our President, George W. Bush, he is not perfect, but he understands the problems and if he were "allowed" to do what he knows "must" be done, the enemies of our nation and our people would run for cover. They are doing a lot of that right now in the new approach to dealing with the "crazies" in Iraq. Just like Rush Limbaugh stated yesterday on his program, no one in history has ever gotten peace through pacifying the enemy. Even though it is not our desire to force people to do what we know should be done to live in peace, those who would force us to live their way only understand "power" and force. The Biblical statement "resist the devil and he will flee from you," certainly applies.

335. The nomination and the race is Fred Thompson’s to win, that is if he chooses to enter. He has the persona and the background to win it all, but me personally I am not sure I would do it if I was him, who needs the headache of a job that you will be ‘damned if you do and damned if you don’t. As for me I have grandchildren and I hope to God that he does run, I am 54 years old I remember the Cold War as not a abstract political ideology, but as a real threat to my existence, I was a child at the time but I remember ‘duck and cover’ and neighbors with bomb shelters, and CD signs, but I was never as worried as I am now that my grandchildren lives will suffer because of the actions of the hate America crowd of both here and abroad.
I for one would like to have someone in the Whitehouse that knows what it is like to be ‘regular’ people, someone who at least at sometime in his life punched a time clock. Someone that put himself through school and life and didn’t relay on his family or the work of others to do it, someone who says what he means and means what he says, someone who realizes as Michael Shaara put it in his novel ‘Killer Angels’: “There are people that aren’t worth a dead dog”; and acts accordingly.
Most of our best Presidents were men who did not seek the office, but became President by incidental happenstance; Washington, Lincoln, TR, and Truman are all excellent examples of this and I think that Fred Thompson is a man that I would gladly add to this short list.

336. RUN FRED RUN, THIS COUNTRY COULD USE ANOTHER TRUE PATRIOT THAT GENUINELY BELIEVES IN IT, AND HAS A DESIRE TO SEE US STAY STRONG AND UNIFIED
MORALLY,ECONOMICALLY,MILITARLY AND POLITICALLY. WE ARE A FAMILY AND SHOULD KEEP OUR DIRTY LAUNDRY OFF OF THE CLOTHES LINE. FRED SEEMS TO HAVE SOME GOOD COMMON SENSE, A STRONG BELIEF IN THE LORD. AND IT DOES'NT TAKE MUCH MORE THAN THAT TO MAKE GOOD SOUND DECISIONS.

337. Chuck Hagel is the man for the Whitehouse. Democrats and Republicans check him out. I think his attitude is a real plus.At 79 years of age I have studied past presidents and we just have not had the talent to fill the position in my lifespan. I think he would do a good job. Don

338. I submitted a comment on Fred Thompson's possible candidacy the last time I viewed this column online but have not yet seen it on this screen? Please read Sen. Thompson's interview with Chris Wallace's Fox News Sunday show of March 11, 2007, where he did suggest that he might be a candidate. A month has transpired since then and all indications in the current news are that he will announce his candidacy within the next few days. If not, he is certain to be drafted to run. He is THE MAN and the TIME IS NOW!
