Thanks to this post at ElephantBiz, it's now obvious that all current GOP candidates will blow away and Fred Thompson will step in to save the day. OK it's not that obvious, but there are many admirers of the former senator from Tennessee, including this Web site.
Hotline on Call quotes the WH Bulletin:
Thompson, the former Tennessee Republican senator who's now a Law & Order prosecutor and regular replacement for radio host Paul Harvey, is being urged by supporters to consider entering the presidential race, according to associates. "The draft Fred movement is growing," says one ally. They say that Thompson is flattered by the suggestions, but it is unclear if he is turning away their appeals. The effort is growing among conservative blogs, where several boards are pushing the folksy straight-talker to get in.But then throws cold water all over the idea:
Most importantly, Sen. John McCain is one of Thompson's best friends. They talk regularly. A source close to Thompson said that Thompson will not run for president, period. But what if McCain faded? This is more a symptom of certain conservatives in the party looking at the current field and realizing that there is no conservative hero among them. The only solution then is to draft one. Huckabee and Brownback don't have the stature and gravitas that Fred Thompson exudes without even trying. Unfortunately Senator Thompson has never indicated much of a desire to be president.
If McCain fades sure, Thompson could step in but don't bet on it. what I'm wondering is that given Rudy's liberal record on things, will there be a conservative Stop Rudy campaign coalescing to draft a champion? Just because conservatives can handle Rudy's liberal values doesn't mean they like it. All things equal, they'd rather have Rudy's qualities plus a social conservative as well.
Fred Thompson may not be the only one to face a draft.

31. Apparently the U.S.News & World Report is thinking along the same line. Check out this short article:

32. If ever there was a "stealth" candidate, Fred Thompson would be it! He's smart. While all the other candidates came out of the blocks before the starting gun fired, hopefully, he is watching and waiting for the right moment to get in. With Democratic hopefuls frenzy-feeding on each other; Republicans appearing dazed and confused and neither party listening to the people (that would be you and me) a potential candidate like Fred Thompson inserted at the right time would be like dropping a shark in a goldfish bowl......a welcome shark at that! Right now both parties (in my humble opinion) are political laughing -stocks...and dare I say, at a global level! As it relates to the work that needs to be done in Washington, I personally believe Mr. Thompson posses the leadership skills and political savvy necessary to corral the common ground of both parties(independents too!)And galvanize their efforts towards bipartisan achievement of this counties most pressing issues (too many to list here) the restoration of our (USA) relevance on the world stage might also be a welcome side dish! I am sure Mr. Thompson knows that politics is a lot like comedy...it's all in the timing and delivery!

35. I won't vote for McCain...he's not a "maverick,"...he's a fence stradler. He makes Kerry's flip flops pale in comparison. If Rudy is the man, then he REALLY has to get a social conservative as his VP running mate...most likely a southern governor. I don't agree with his liberal social views, but we've had Bush for 8 years and abortion is still on demand, the gay marriage push is as strong as ever, etc. Rudy says he'd nominate strict constructionists to the judiciary...and that's really the only impact a president has on a social agenda these days. Romney is who I will support in the primary though. I do wish there was another choice...none of them excite me...and that's what worries me. Of course, the fear of "President" Hillary will motivate all conservatives once the primary season is over with.

36. I'd vote for Thompson over any democrat mentioned so far.

37. Everyone listed above who would vote for Thompson
has forgot he broke his oath of office when he
and seven other "moderate" republicans voted to
let President Clinton escape impeachment. I can
not support anyone for the office who has a proven
record of breaking his oath.

38. Memo to sharon (no. 12): "a bit ticked off"?? Cutting people's heads off is a sign of "a bit ticked off"? And please get off this war for oil kick -- it is tiresome and totally ludicrous as the pump prices show every day. Fred Thompson is a nice man and a good actor but no Ronald Reagan.

39. Thompson was a part of the group that professed to believe in term limits. (Remember the "Contract with America?) Fred Thompson kept his word. It is possible that by keeping his word, he removed the only honest elected official in recent history.

40. as par the course we have a collection of con men and women wanting to reside in the oval office.
I don't trust any of them.
All we hear is 12 lies and a bed time story from this bunch.

42. Why on earth would Republicans consider anyone but Rudy. The party just doesn't seem to get it. American voters have seen how Republicans perform when they have control, and its not a pretty site. I think most Americans are also sick of the Republicans grovelling for Fundamentalists, who are a hate group. Rudy with his human values of live and let live is the only one who can make the majority of Americans believe that the Republican/Fundmentalist "let's beat up on gays and ignore the issues" era is over.
If Republicans truly want more of the same scapegoating and mismanagement that we've had since Bush got in office, why don't you nominate Jeb. The poor guy is down in Coral Gables without a job and Floridians like his replacement much better.

43. Too bad for senator Obama. His remarks to the jewish crowd about going after Iran is paralel to Hilary's vote for the Irak war. Both wantthe jewish money and some votes. Both are dead wrong, moraly and politically. I would not vote for people who would use the poor soldiers of this nation to serve there political purposes. Too bad Obama because you were doing good...

44. Sharon, Amazing you don't know what Thomson represents yet you assume, he's pro anywar, anti gay, anti abrtion, anti immigration etc etc. You tell someone to stop parroting the disproving fallacy that the islamofacists are out to get us. Since when was that disproven? And who disproved it?
