Bill Frist Endorses Fred Thompson

I know that it's not a major 'get' or anything, as they know each other well and come from the same state, but it does give more oxygen to the Fred Thompson draft movement.

Bill Frist at the volpac blog:
I believe Fred Thompson should run for President.

I've not talked with Fred personally about a potential run, so I am basing my thoughts simply on knowing him well, having worked with him in policy and politics everyday for 8 years, and knowing the people across America want a genuine leader who represents them.

Fred understands real people and they understand him. He understands the legislative process and has a strong bipartisan appeal, though he is a real conservative.

He has the experience of government service with a real appreciation for all three branches of government. He is a commonsense leader.
Speaking of the Chris Wallace interview, the transcript is here.Thompson has been getting a lot of attention lately and it's easy to see why. He's a fairly doctrinaire conservative at a time when there are no real conservatives in the race (Romney, Giuliani), or they have problems (McCain, Gingrich). Fred Thompson, if running, would instantly become the default conservative candidate. In the GOP, that's a pretty powerful starting position.

The big question is whether he's really serious. He has to demonstrate the seriousness and some moves toward organization and money. Right now it seems like he's playing around with the idea.

Personally, I'm lukewarm on the idea of Fred Thompson. I like his chances in the general election, I like his positions, but in his career I've never seen him out in front fighting. That's not a serious knock, we've just gotten to know him and his achievements are absolutely nothing to sneeze at. Fred will be a serious contender and will take a serious bite out of someone's support.
