Seriously, what a horrible performance the host of Hardball turned in tonight. He didn't manage the time well at all among the candidates, and kept going back to Mitt Romney at the start of a round-robin, ensuring that Romney would get far more air-time than his rivals. The poor guys at the far end of the stage were desperate to get a word in edgewise.
But then there were the questions themselves. The low point came when Matthews asked whether would it be a good thing to have Bill Clinton back in the White House. Is he serious? Was he confusing the forum for one of his blow-hard shows? Actually, all of the candidates burst out laughing upon hearing the question, then many went on to note the obvious, if Bill Clinton were back in the White House, it would mean that their own bids had failed.
He also completely mis-characterized Rudy Giuliani's position on the national identification card for resident aliens and embarrassed himself with some off the cuff mumbling. Really, he should never be allowed to do this kind of thing in the future.

166. What a sorry bunch of losers. They're all for putting women back into the dark ages, taping their mouths shut and taking control of our bodies and minds. Sanctity of life, My Foot! Squash a woman's right to choose, but continue killing our troops and thousands of innocent Iraqi's. That's A-OK! Preach morality? Good Grief! How many of their ranks have been mired in pornography and illicit sexual acts all the while pretending to be holier than thou and condeming the Clinton Administration. What a show of sanctomony and fear when confronted with the mere names of Hillary and Bill, all the while ignoring the intolorable situation and dangerous position this administration has put us in. Admitting mistakes by Bush and his cronies doesn't come close to describing and atoning for what they've done to us. Outright lies, macho bravado and ignorant decisions in the past six years have put our country on a path of destruction. I am a 64 year old grandmother of four and have never seen a President as incompetent and destructive as GWB in my entire lifetime. Haven't the Republicans done enough damage? Go get um you good Democratic condtenders. I can hardly wait!!!

167. David, I really appreicate your critique of this debate. I must admit, I agree completely on every single point you make!! It was very difficult to get a really good grasp of what these candidates are about and I think an opportunity was wasted in this debate. Candidates didn't have enough time to really debate the big issues for Americans and many of the questions presented were just not important (wasting LOTS of time). I did not get the depth of insight I needed to decide. This is important, if I can't feel comfortable with these candidates, I may have to look at the other side. I want my vote to go to the right candidate, not necessarily by political party. I look forward to the debates in June.

168. There is no doubt in my mind that the debates lacked substance and except for a few instances was devoid of reality. The socalled top three were devoid of anything that would make them winners,,,in my mind,,,they seemed to be acting in A NERVOUS WAY , RATHER THAN REAL PROS....GIVING ONE 60SECONDS IS RIDICULOUS. And MATTHEWS DID POORLY...What is happening with him///////

171. I don't think Hilary has to fear Obama based on his comments about being opposed to the war before it started. Obama was not in a national office at the time, nor had he ever held one. I was opposed to the war, too? So, who cares? His votes on the war since he has been in the Senate have been very similar to Hilary's. His resume? Oh, yeah, he won an election when his only opponent was ALAN KEYES! yippee!

173. Another question for Chris Matthews, "What do you dislike most about being an American"?

174. What Debate? What a joke. Such ignorance and sarcastic attitudes from the host moderator and pundits. Again, media cronies and there selfserving ideas and attitudes at everyone else's expense. "Stupidball" with chris matthews and "I count but you don't" with kieth olberman. Can't capitalize there names, they don't deserve it.

175. Abutom makes the common error that we are fighting in Iraq because we were attacked on 9/11.Fifteen of the 19 hijackers were Saudi nationals. Despite the fact that Bush hinself has had to rebut the notion that there is a direct link between al-qaeda and Saddam Hussein, many people still labor under this delusion while Cheney blithely continues to perpetuate this falsehood, even as recently as a few weeks ago when a CIA report stated there was no such link.Bush, too, does not hesitate to invoke 9/11 to justify his invasion of Iraq. This is par for the course from an administration that tried mightily to invoke images of a "mushroom cloud" over an American city in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, which supposedly was an imminent threat to all of us. The specious, spurious and mendacious claims of the current administration require a level of sequacity to accept and thus make it more difficult to vote for a Republican candidate again, including the current crop who also seem to be willing to accept such a premise.
As for the "Chris Matthews Rasfanjani" remark, that is another indicator of Abutom's critical thinking skills.

176. I actually have to applaud all the candidates for even doing the debate considering the well known anti Republican bias of Chris Matthews.
His questions were loaded to try to embarrass the candidates and make them look bad to the American Public. The one that he really went after was Giulliani.
If you listen to MSNBC after debate. Their commentators went out of their way to knock Guilliani. It is obvious that he is the last person the Democrats want to face in a general election and MSNBC was doing their best to prevent him from building upon his lead for the nomination.
Even one time conservative Scarborough seems to have done an Auriana Huffington from hanging out to much with left wing liberals.
Funny how the Dems refuse to do a debate when it was sponsored by Fox, but the Republicans weren’t afraid to go on the far left leaning MSNBC.
I can only hope that the Republicans don’t fall into the Democrats trap. While all 10 Republican candidates would be far better than anything the Democrats have to offer, but there is only 1 or maybe 2 of them (Giulliani and maybe McCain) that could win in the General Election and the Democrats know it. They are going to do everything they can to prevent them from getting the nomination.
Republicans better think long and hard if they are so opposed to Giulliani’s positions on abortion and other social issues (the President really doesn’t have any control over them anyway) that they would rather have a President Hillary Clinton than vote for Giulliani! Because that is what is going to happen, and they will only have themselves to blame.

177. Mickey, get your facts straight Giulliani was correct on the question about the difference between Shiite and Sunnis. If he wasn't you'd be hearing about it every hour on the hour on the liberal media.
The MSNBC commentators checked after the debate and their dissappointment was obvious when they admitted Giulliani got the question right. Rudy was prepared for the question and NAILED IT.

178. I for one don't have the time to waste and watch a bunch of losers talk about nothing. I watched 'Close to Home' and 'Numbers'. Both shows 10 time more intellectual and interesting. Once again remember - DON'T PUMP GAS ON MAY 15. IT IS THE NATIONAL BOYCOTT AGAINST THE OIL CRONIES (Bush, Cheney, Rove & Co.).

180. YEAH, I GUESS CNN'S WOLF BLITZER, WOULD HAVE BEEN A REAL PIECE OF WORK! CHRIS MATTHEWS DID AS WELL AS HE COULD CONSIDERING THE STUPID QUESTIONS HE WAS GIVEN. MAYBE WOLF BLITZER COULD HAVE BEEN EVEN MORE BORING IF THAT IS POSSIBLE. AND MAYBE,THEY COULD HAVE GIVEN WOLFIE FOUR STOOLS TO STAND ON.
