Amazing. During last night's Republican debate, three candidates signaled that they did not believe in the theory of evolution. Mike Huckabee, Tom Tancredo, and Sam Brownback. John McCain himself, who was initially asked the question, seemed almost hestitant to endorse what is perhaps the most robust scientific theory of our age. You might as well say you don't believe that planes can fly. Watch.
Of course, evolution itself is not incompatible with a belief in God, as some would have you think. But it certainly doesn't square with a literalist interpretation of the Bible. One wonders how each candidate would respond in full to this question, and whether it's the last we'll hear of it.

61. As I said in another comment in the election blogs, WOW, you want to talk about hard to believe...you actually buy into evolution? You have got to be kidding me! Evolution isn't a good theory - it is just a pagan religion masquerading as science. Take a look at creation and you have got to see that there is a Creator.
Think back to H.S. biology - Your eyes alone can disprove evolution. The retina, which covers less than one square inch, contains 137,000,000 light sensitive cells. Even Darwin admitted "To suppose that the eye could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest degree."
Think about it, which evolved first the lungs, the mucus lining to protect the lungs, the throat, or the perfect mixture of gases to be breathed into the lungs? DNA or the RNA to carry the DNA messages to cell parts? The immune system or the need for it?
If humanity just happened without any purposeful design, explain how you sneeze at 120 miles per hour but that every time you sneeze, you have been programed to close your eyes?
Is it possible that similarities in design between different animals prove a common Creator instead of a common ancestor? You know, I'll but into a lot of things, but I just can't buy into Evolution. I find it very ironic that people like you charge Christians as being stupid people who blindly follow what we have been taught from youth. All the while you steadfastly hang onto a "theory" you were spoonfed from kindergarten, which is based on lies and speculation.
Give me your favorite proof for evolution -- Where are your peppered moths? They were attached to the trees for photographing. Piltdown Man? Jawbone of a modern ape. Nebraska Man? "Scientifically" built up from one tooth, later found to be the tooth of an extinct pig.
Ask yourself, why is it that you so fiercely hang onto evolution? Because if you can tell yourself that there is no Creator, then you do not have to obey His commands and you can continue in the sin you love.
Proof is all around you that there is an intelligent design to this universe, our world, and your own body. Please do not insult me and the rest of us who believe in Creationism and Intelligent Design until you can come up with something better than a straw man argument about the flat-earth theory. I remind you that it was "scientists" that believed that hundreds of years ago. I and generations of Christians before me have believed that the earth is round. Why? Because the Bible tells us so. (Isaiah 40:22 KJV)

62. The "scientific" claims of evolution:
1. Life comes from non-life! Science is based upon experimentation and observation. There is no instance of observing life coming from non-life.
2. Life evolved with, and without free oxygen in the atmosphere; its presence would oxidize and thus prevent all organic molecules required for life from forming, its absence would prevent life from existing!
3. Raw energy "created" enough inconceivably vast numbers of the right kind of biological molecules, despite the fact that raw energy destroys them at a vastly greater rate than they are created.
4. Against inconceivable odds, only the 20 correct left-handed amino acids came together to form proteins required for life, and only right-handed, five-carbon sugars came together to form the required DNA and RNA, despite the vast number of other possible random variations for right and left-handed amino acids and right and left-handed, four-carbon, six-carbon, and seven-carbon sugars!
5. Evolution claims further that the initial stage in the origin of life was the origin of a self-replicating DNA or RNA molecule. There is no such thing! In fact, DNA is so fragile that it is destroyed even by water! Were it not for cell functions to repair DNA, life cannot, could not exist!
How is it not obvious that life has been designed and created by an incredibly intelligent and powerful agent. "The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of His hands." Psalm 19:1.

64. Again, the tendency for people to "believe what they want to believe." Jesus Christ! Ahem!
The theory of evolution is complicated and I am no expert on it. However, I have an open and inquisitive mind. The dogma and literal interpretation of the bible is at complete odds with having an open mind. In fact it's more in tune with blind patriotism being the last refuge of a scoundrel. However, having an open mind, I can still leave open the possibility of a creative force in the universe, God if you will. As someone pointed out there is no reason God and evolution have to be mutually exclusive. In fact, it seems obvious to me that God created evolution, if you will. Talk about an apparent oxymoron, it really isn't. Still that is a mere speculation on a mere mortal's part.
It seems to me the part of evolution that fundamentalist Christians get most upset about is the idea that we, precious flawless humans created in "his" image allegedly evolved from apes. God forbid! How insulting! How dare you link our noble species to those dirty filthy Godless creatures! All we have done is rape and pillage and kill each other over and over again for thousands of years all in the name of our creator. Nice job living up to "his" image. All the apes ever did was live peacefully in their little tribes in the jungle and never hurt anyone. Those horrible ugly things! Come to think of it, maybe it's an insult to the apes to suggest we came from them. Maybe it's a good thing we can't find that missing link. Leave the monkeys alone; take responsibility for our own disastrous legacy.
But, I don't even have to be fully knowledgeable about the science of evolution to know that there is fairly indisputable evidence that humans did walk the earth say 60 thousand years ago, just to pick a random number. That evidence alone disproves the static claim of the literal interpretation of the bible, that we all came from Adam and Eve around 6 thousand years ago, which, by the way, would mean that we all necessarily sprang from incestuous relationships between their offspring, no? And Jesus, don't even talk about dinosaurs!
We've already got a fundamentalist knucklehead in the white house. If the American people elect another one, God forbid, well then, I guess we will get what we deserve and my growing misanthropy will be justified. Go on believing what you want to believe people. Whatever, I wash my hands!

66. The ultimate question - the one that always stumps me, and should stump all who ponder the source of creation - is: if god created the universe, who created god? If your answer is that god was "always" (whatever always means in that context) here, then why not say the universe was "always" here. That eliminates an unnecessary intervenor (god). Scientific theory employs "Occam's Razor," which requires ommission of unnecessary steps that merely complicate, but don't advance, the process of reaching conclusions. To be fair about it, the Big Bang theory doesn't take me any farther. If the entire unimagineably vast universe originated from an unimagineably tiny "singularity," where did the singularity come from? If it was "always" there, then, well.... You get my point.

68. I could believe that God "created" evolution, but that is not what He said! He said that He created the world in six days. Furthermore, His story is much more plausible than the evolution story.
Evolution is a different kind of "old-time religion." They discard an eternal God (saying that it's not logical that God could have always existed), and instead believe in eternal matter/energy. They discard an unchanging God of law and order (which is reflected, and observable in nature) and believe instead in a system of randomness, disorder, purposeless, and without any obligations or requirements on mankind. Real and useful science is founded on laws, order, purpose and design.
I do not have confidence in a Presidential candidate who believes in the evolution story. He is a person who places more importance in going along with the "wisdom" of man rather than the Wisdom of God. He is like a man who builds his house upon the sand, instead of a solid foundation on rock.

71.
1. "Life" has no real scientific meaning. Like it or not, there is a continuum between people, viruses, prions, and nonliving things.
2. Anyone who believes Evolution or even this universe is "unlikely" has a very poor understanding of probability. With such vast space and time, even the craziest things are possible. Plus, there may be a million universes out there, and only this one happens to support life. Either way, PROBABILITY ONLY APPLIES TO FUTURE EVENTS, IT DOES NOT APPLY TO PAST EVENTS. IN FACT YOU USE PAST EVENTS TO DETERMINE THE PROBABILITY OF NEW EVENTS!!
3. The ease in believing something DOESN'T MAKE IT ANYMORE TRUE!!! How much of math for example, is counter-intuitive?
4. Athiests have nothing against God. It's dogmatic unrelenting unneccessary belief in teachings by others that they are most concerned about.
5. Patronizing Creationists or Evolutionists does not help them understand anything.
6. THERE is NO SCIENTIFIC DIFFERENCE between "theory" and "law" Anyone who says otherwise does not understand science or is manipulating the confusion to support their beliefs. Scientific Theories/Lawsare still robust explanations based on thousands of scientific observations and experiments, not on pre-written stories.
7. Anything about Darwin changing his mind is absolute myth and is still irrelevent. Even if Einstien changed his mind, we would still be using his theories.
8. You cannot disprove anything by simple imagination. That isn't scientific.
9. LIFE DID NOT ORGINALLY NEED FREE OXYGEN. Look up "anerobic respiration"
10. Energy cannot be created or destroyed by ordinary chemical means (Kieth #69)
11. THERE ARE SUCH THINGS AS SELF REPLICATING RNA MOLECULES. Ribosomes are made up of RNA and they can create more strands of RNA. Look it UP!!!!

72. Alright, I just gotta say this is about stupid, i mean your trying to convince somebody that their whole life is wrong and that they really arent that smart.....oh yeah im referring to evolutionists. Hell im not religious and i dont have a whole lot of faith which is why i believe in god. Another reason is while science said the earth was flat the bible said it was round. when science said the sun went around the earth the bible said the earth revolved around the sun. when god made the sun stand still. that might explain the leap year. a description of a biblical beast i believe in ezekiel or daniel portrays an eagle with the heart of a man coming out of a lion wouldn't that describe america coming from england? whose animal is the lion? i can go on and on and hell im not even in church although i have read the bible. speaking of intelligence when asked to reference the smartest man in recent times who do we place the honor on? hint he had wild ass hair, ding! ding! einstein! ya know what he said he said? that it was impossible for there not to be a god. no im not in any church. I just heard little facts like if earth was a little closer to the sun we'd roast, a little further and we'd freeze. it spins at the exact rate to promote life. every chain in life balances each other out like too many would devour too much of this without a natural enemy to keep their numbers even thats just an example people dont be a smart ass and you can plainly see examples of what im talking about hell even science admits that theres a balance so how did this happen? with a big bang? it just happened? or is nature intelligent enough to learn from its mistakes? like doh! i got life going but i forgot to give that life food damnit so it died out alright poof! okay theres life again, damnit! now they had sex way to much and populated to fast and ate the food supply. damnit! okay, this time they wont be as potent as before.....shit they couldn't reproduce fast enough and died off again....so they had to come into being with all the right preprogrammed codes and even though they were the simplest of cells they automatically knew what they had to do to stay alive even though there was no higher being or anything telling them what to do or what not to do. they just knew.....alright im having a hard time explaining this shit i hope ya get the idea and realize that there has to be a higher power now whether what i personally believe is correct which is that the bible is true i dont know but to make any kind of sense at all you have to admit that there is a god something had to have started it all and if there is a god either were like a sea monkey project which i dont believe or there was a purpose in us being created which i like to believe if there is a purpose in us being created what is that purpose? is it to learn a lesson or to worship god or both is it to undergo tests in which we are tested to determine our connection to a higher power "ie" faith and trust in god like the bible says im trying to convince ya but im reminded of a passage in the bible referring to the last days and what people will believe and do and be like damnit i wish this wasn't the case but this nwo shit this belief that there is no god the events and times and circumstances this was all predicted and it sucks because now it looks like im going to have to figure out who if anybody is right eventually and ima have to give up premarital sex and not swear anymore and let people hit the other cheek see that just sucks ass! cause i like to fight go figure i've been accused of being the devil on more then one occasion and most people that know me wouldn't be expecting me to side with christians because im just to good at being a sinner now i just got done writing a long ass passage and kiss my ass im too damn lazy to put in the important little dots and commas if you cant get the gist of what i was saying without them you have no imagination. im not a writer although i've got shit to say on a shitload of subjects like if your really american you'll quit voting the lesser evil to hell with them all ron paul is the only candidate worth my lazy ass waitin in a line for if ya vote for anybody else your an idiot check his issues out ronpaul2008.com we dont need a damn car salesman people ie romney and we dont need a globalist ie clinton. paul is the only candidate that would give us our freedom back think about it whether your liberal, conservative or libertarian if you cant see the common sense that ron paul makes you have no idea what an american really is god bless america to hell with big government

73. I'm increasingly concerned about the political bias of the mainstream media -- including AOL.The attempt, by radically simplifying the question of evolution ("Do you believe in it or not?")is to push Republican candidates into sounding like ignorant rubes. Am I right?
George McKenna at 2:40PM on May 4th 2007
74. George, #71,
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Actually, you are wrong in one sense, the initial question on evolution came from a citizen who'd e-mailed it to The Politico (a co-sponsor of the debate), not the media. You may think that I'm trying to make the republicans who don't believe in evolution look stupid. I would argue that not believing in evolution (which, I realize, is a theory just like gravity is) is itself the idicator that concerned me. In this regard, McCain, Giuliani, Romney and all those who didn't raise their hands, did not seem stupid to me at all.
