Interesting polling numbers out today. Nix reported on the surge by non-candidate Fred Thompson who gained 5 percent in a week while John McCain fell back to fourth behind Mitt Romney. That is what you would call amnesty-bill-blow-back.
In the latest USA TODAY/Gallup poll, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are essentially tied:
The Illinois senator bests Clinton by a single percentage point, 30%-29%, if the contest includes former vice president Al Gore.
Clinton bests Obama by a single point, 37%-36%, if it doesn't include Gore.
Those are very interesting numbers. Note that it was not a large sampling and was was taken before the debate on Sunday night. The results are significant anyway.
Hillary Clinton has been running the race as if she's trying not to lose. Any coach would tell you that you play to win. To use a football analogy, Hillary is in a prevent defense, allowing the short plays up the middle. The problem is, the prevent is good at the end of the game with a lead, she's playing a prevent in the middle of the second quarter and Obama is eating up the field in five yard increments.
OK, enough of the gridiron analogies. What these polls are telling us is that the American people want change. They are sick of the Bushes and the Clintons and want some new blood in power. Barack Obama is clear and concise with his message and doesn't have the baggage of having voted for the Iraq war that Clinton and John Edwards do. He used that to precision by slamming Edwards with it the other night. He is looking like a formidable candidate as of now.
On the other side, Fred Thompson is running the perfect non-campaign. He has the field looking over their shoulders and, until recently, was quietly sneaking up on them. Rudy Giuliani must be getting nervous as Thompson has the conservative credentials he lacks and the cult of personality that would be his if Thompson wasn't around. A Thompson-Giuliani ticket would be unstoppable in my opinion.
Probably the most interesting thing in the GOP poll is the effect the immigration issue is having. John McCain and President Bush are getting hammered every day and it's showing up in the numbers. Mitt Romney hasn't come out against the bill as forcefully as Thompson and the results are clear.

17. #11 Nolene. Your comment made some sense until you finished it off with ludicrous Republican rhetoric. You give the impression that terrorists came into being and committed acts of aggression only under the Clinton Administration. Well you are totally wrong; they have been around forever and are spread around the Globe. We are fighting some of them in Iraq, but they are even here in our country attempting further attacks on us, proof being the two recent arrests made in the last month alone. So why don't you stick to the issues at hand and stop blaming the Clinton's for all of your masters shortcomings. Hillary only stated that a small band attacked us on 911, which happened under your masters watch not Clinton's. Using your recipe for finger pointing, then the U.S.S. Cole incident belonged to the Administration before his, and guess who that was????? Stand up be a person and except responsibility for voting for a moron who has recently pissed off the Russians along with everyone else, and given the chance he will piss off the only one left "The Heavenly Father"
Get a Life.

18. Stop free medical, free welfare, free social security, free citizenship to children born here, free credit at BOA [without a social security number]free schooling and lunches, and I bet we'd see a bunch of the illegals leave. It angers me and most people I know that we as citizens of this country let this go on without kicking and screaming to the government about this. We don't need more poor, ignorant, people invading our country on a daily basis, wake up America, we are losing our rights. I have no problem with people coming into America and loving it, but, when you fly your flag above mine, I'm damn angry. Ginny

19. As far as Hillary Clinton becoming president, it aint gonna happen folks, she's the most cold calculating woman on the planet. I think having a woman as President is fine, but not HER. All these Hillary foks want is Billy boy around again and that aint gonna happen either. If she does by some hook or crook get it, she'd send him on the road permanently during her tenure. Also, if she does become president he will won't have a key to the White House or to her bedroom, wanna bet? Ginny

20. It pleases me that a worman is running for president. It is just unfortunate that it is Hilary Clinton. She is strong and smart but has the moral integrity of a cat. I keep thinking of Nixon. He was a smart guy who accomplished some good things but his level of ethics led us right down the halls of Watergate. When Bill Clinton was in the Whitehouse, so much time and energy were wasted combating one scandal after another. Not all of them were of his making. We have no more time to spend on these things. We have serious problems and need to elect someone with less of an entitlement attitude and certainly less baggage.

22. rrm12 --- it took more than 9 months to plan the attack on 9/11 yes it happened under the Bush administration but only after it had been planned for a long time and why don't you look at the record of how many attacks took place at the world trade center under the clinton administration after clinton had been in office for a long time and what did clinton do about it?? If he had stood up for USA when it all first started happening instead of ignoring it and doing f***ing nothing we would still have problems but we have to protect ourselves. I never new much Al-quaida until 9/11 because clinton never let america know how dangerous they were he acted like his wife does like they are a small band of terrorist they are no small band look what they are capable of and you can act like rosie.I am a person who is concerned for america and my childrens future and i am not going to treat this like it is no big deal like you do and you are a typical democrate only concerned with what you have now and not about the future every threat is big even if you don't think so (like you said about the arrest) you act like it is no big deal until they blow up something else then you will be blaming the president. So just because you are not concerned with real issues and I am don't get mad at me because I am really scared for this country and I think some issues are more important than you do. PS I am right terrorist did commit acts of aggression on this country during the clinton administration 9/11 was not the first time al-quaida bombed the world trade center, not to mention our barracks in africa and not to mention the uss cole and all of this happened by al-qaida under the clinton administration and he was in for 8 years and daddy bush for 4years so you need to get your info right and quit attacking peopler when you get scared when you hear the truth.. i am done

23. Why can't the remaining 30% that still favor Hillary see what a phoney manipulative and opportunistic candidate she is. She is so perfect and precious. Give me an honest candidate with flaws like Edwards or Obama. They actually admit to human failings...how refreshing after 8 years of The Decider.

24. Given the way men generally seem to feel about women bosses, I think that this country would vote in a partially black man before they would a woman of any color, and if Hillary Clinton gets the nomination, that Fred Thompson could beat her hands down.

25. God help this country if Hillary is elected! She is as evil as SATAN! Yu can just see it every time she appears and then tries to persuade you with sweet rhetoric. She is a very dangerous woman!
Fred Thompson on the other hand is just what this country needs, a strong, reliable, and may I say honest leader.

26. Illegal Immigration and Amnesty is only a problem because politicians on both sides are catering to the potential illegal votes from 12 million plus Illegal aliens. With forged documents so easily obtainable large numbers of these Illegals will be able to register to vote in 2008. That is why the Senate and the Congress are doing nothing to enforce our laws, round em up and ship em out. The President and every politician says it is impossible to deport them all. I don't think so.
If you took every dollar we are spending to give them free health care, welfare, free education and college tuition that alone would pay the cost to arrest and deport them. Add to that the value of heavy fines that we could level for hiring, employing and housing Illegals we would have enough cash to close our borders as well.
Politicians are selling their souls for a vote....but if they continue to support Amnesty as they are now; someday a Mexican is likely to take their job.

27. Fred Thompson is a hell of a lot more honest then the Clintons.
HELLery is great at pointing fingers but she does nothing to help.
Being from NYC I saw first hand what a liar she is

28. OK, I believe that these polls do leave a lot to be desired. Obviously, they are not asking the right questions. The right question is: Why is it that an illegal immigrant alien can have a child in our country and that child automatically become an American citizen. Shouldn't it revert to “the tainted fruit law” (if the fruit is bad everything that stems from that fruit is also bad)? Why is that OK? Change this law and then there would be no hard feelings when you send the parents back to where they came from, the kid(s) would be going with them. If your parents are illegal so are you. How come no one talks about that? That would solve a whole lot of our problems. We have to take care of these kids (medical, food stamps, etc). That is not OK. And you wonder why people get so riled up about it. It absolutely makes no sense, beside the fact that it is unfair to the American taxpayer. 12,000,000 illegal aliens, Holy Cow, how did this happen again? We have been lulled into complacency. Why is it OK, for illegals to protest in our streets against our policies? Am I crazy, shouldn't these people be in jail on there way back to where they came from? Not only do they think they have a right to protest they do it with an arrogant attitude. Like they have a right too. Like this is there country. That's our fault, they are not even hiding. To them we are a joke. Any people that would knowingly allow there country to be taken over by criminals and the like, these criminals refuse to speak our language and get us to change our signs, voting machines, drivers tests to their language, yes we are a joke. Sometimes when you bend over backwards to be fair you end up being stupid. Let's stop being stupid. I’m voting for the person that will fight against open immigration. If it’s a Republican so be it. Hillary, Obama you both need to step up.
