Interesting polling numbers out today. Nix reported on the surge by non-candidate Fred Thompson who gained 5 percent in a week while John McCain fell back to fourth behind Mitt Romney. That is what you would call amnesty-bill-blow-back.
In the latest USA TODAY/Gallup poll, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are essentially tied:
The Illinois senator bests Clinton by a single percentage point, 30%-29%, if the contest includes former vice president Al Gore.
Clinton bests Obama by a single point, 37%-36%, if it doesn't include Gore.
Those are very interesting numbers. Note that it was not a large sampling and was was taken before the debate on Sunday night. The results are significant anyway.
Hillary Clinton has been running the race as if she's trying not to lose. Any coach would tell you that you play to win. To use a football analogy, Hillary is in a prevent defense, allowing the short plays up the middle. The problem is, the prevent is good at the end of the game with a lead, she's playing a prevent in the middle of the second quarter and Obama is eating up the field in five yard increments.
OK, enough of the gridiron analogies. What these polls are telling us is that the American people want change. They are sick of the Bushes and the Clintons and want some new blood in power. Barack Obama is clear and concise with his message and doesn't have the baggage of having voted for the Iraq war that Clinton and John Edwards do. He used that to precision by slamming Edwards with it the other night. He is looking like a formidable candidate as of now.
On the other side, Fred Thompson is running the perfect non-campaign. He has the field looking over their shoulders and, until recently, was quietly sneaking up on them. Rudy Giuliani must be getting nervous as Thompson has the conservative credentials he lacks and the cult of personality that would be his if Thompson wasn't around. A Thompson-Giuliani ticket would be unstoppable in my opinion.
Probably the most interesting thing in the GOP poll is the effect the immigration issue is having. John McCain and President Bush are getting hammered every day and it's showing up in the numbers. Mitt Romney hasn't come out against the bill as forcefully as Thompson and the results are clear.

46. Speaking of morons--richiemac is the textbook example--what an ignorant liberal Democrat don't have-a-clue moronic sob. President Bush pissed off the Russians?? And you tell somebody to get a life, you imbecelic asshole! Why don't you get hold of Dr Kevorkian who just got out of jail to put you out of your misery. It's a shame your mother didn't exercise her right to have an abortion--and that goes for all you other uneducated ignorant assholes who can't spell and try to write in about our president who is trying to protect your miserable asses. I can't believe some of this childish scribbling from so-called Americans. Daniel Rosenberg, you are more stupid than richiemac.

48. Obama's comment that there is great (black) frustration and anger when a "not guilty"(sic) verdict comes from a jury is right on. that's true with whites too. it's exactly how i felt when the jury let O.J. get away with murder!

49. I was wondering how long it would be before Obama used the race card. Now he is saying his people are going to riot over nothing being done in New Orleans. Don't you think it's time the government tells those people to get off their asses, and start contributing to society.

50. Obama is our only hope...speaking of names, which I agree have NO significence in any presidential race...but just for insurance his name should really be Barack Obiwon Obama!
He speaks clearly the truth and nothing but. He is the only candidate with a spotless past. His heartfelt desire to turn this troubled country around is evident in everything he does and says.
Hail to Obama!!! We should all pray to whomever we pray to that he wins his bid for the countries highest office. God knows how desparately we need radical change. The one who can and will effect that
change is Mr. Barack Obama.

51. I read all these freakin' posts and wonder why people spend soooo much time bashing one candidate, former president or another, even other posters instead of putting that energy into finding a solution to our problems. If you people had a clue, stopped bashing and fighting amongst yourself ... maybe, JUST MAYBE enough of us could get our pathetic excuses for politicins to LISTEN TO US!! I know, it's probably a pipe dream, however this country goes downhill a little more each day and will continue to do so with current sets of politicians we have. Wouldn't finding a way to get a politician who works for the regular, every day middle class American on the ticket be more productive for our society and country? Or have we been driven so far into the ground by the past couple of decades worth of politicians that we're better off arguing amongst ourselves than finding solutions?

#49 - SPOTLESS?? PLEASE!!! NO ONE has a spotless past. His skeletons just haven't been uncovered yet.
He speaks only the truth? LMFAO!! Seriously now, you sell used cars?? He's a damn politician. There isn't one on the face of the Earth who doesn't lie to their people about some things.
#50 - I agree. But what does it say about whites, when they don't spark riots because of it. What does it say about African-Americans when they get pissed at the whites about something racially related and they riot and burned down their own freakin' neighborhoods? I have to laugh at them. I'm sorry but if you're pissed off at white people and want to riot, why take it out on your own people and neighborhoods???

54. "WATCH YUOR WORDS: THEY BECOME ACTION.
WATCH YOUR ACTIONS; THEY BECOME HABITS.
WATCH YOUR HABITS; THEY BECOME CHARACTER.
WATCH YOUR CHARACTER: IT BECOMES YOUR DESRINY".

58. #48. I wish I could see where your ignorant and plain racist statements were coming from. We're talking about people who have lost every single possession they own. I think it would take a little longer than a year or two to become the next Noble Prize winner; but hey I guess everyone can't be vinnie.
