The mainstream media woke up to the fact that while Fred Thompson played a district attorney on TV, he was working as a corporate shill as a D.C. lobbyist. USA Today wrote up a great story about how Thompson's corporate lobbying career could hurt him in his race. Given that corruption was the number one issue in the 2006 elections, you'd have to be brain-dead (or a quintessential Washington insider) to think a lobbyist could run for president with no questions from the public.
Hilariously, Mr. Thompson is now defending his shilling, saying that lobbying "an honorable endeavor that goes back to the beginnings of this republic." Look, just 'cause it's one of the oldest professions doesn't mean it's one of the noblest.
As if it couldn't get any sadder, it's becoming clear that this man doesn't understand he's not on contract with his corporate backers any more. He's already declared that his keystone policy proposal for his presidential campaign is cutting taxes for corporations. The U.S. has the second lowest effective corporate tax burden of any nation in the world. We've just witnessed seven years of tax cuts for the richest and deficits climbing into the trillions. There's a word for Fred Thompson's proposal. It's hubris. This man is so bought and paid for he thinks working for his corporate masters will pass muster in real America.
I hope you've gotten enough sleep, Fred. Your wake-up call is just about due.

17. "WE ALREADY HAVE A TAX SYSTEM THAT PUNISHES OVER-ACHIEVERS (THE RICH) WHILE REWARDING UNDER-ACHIEVERS (THE POOR)."
Bwahahahahahahaha!!!!! I can't stop laughing at this one. Sure, there are some rich people who are self-made, but to insinuate that people who are rich are all hard-working, self-made visionaries, and all poor or middle-class people are lazy, unmotivated, underachievers is incredibly elitist and shows how completely, unadulteratedly clueless and out of touch rich people are. Capitalism is a great idea. The problem is many self-described capitalists don't actually believe in it. What they actually believe in is much more akin to fascism. If you want to observe the true nature of the so-called capitalist, look no further to the turn of the 20th century in the United States and the unregulated, everything goes "capitalist" system that existed then. Monopolies, business trusts, and an increasingly smaller elitist class becoming ever wealthier off the blood of an increasingly larger underclass damn near transformed this country into the first fascist state. Funny that it took a great REPUBLICAN president in TR to determine that unchecked capitalism could be just as tyrannical and evil as any other politico-economic system devised by man. But, I guess in the average Republican extremist's view, the pre-Roosevelt years of the robber barons and corporate trusts were the "good 'ol days."

19. Lynne, who do you think pays all of the taxes. Big business has no money that we Americans do not give them. If you raise their taxes you will raise our taxes. Bottom line. Simple. Think about it.

21. Most of america, Dem and Rep, want the illegal situation solved not by saying hey your legal now, bring everyone you know in also.
FRED THOMPSON: We should scrap this ‘comprehensive’ immigration bill and the whole debate until the government can show the American people that we have secured the borders — or at least made great headway.”“Marriage is between a man and a woman, and I don’t believe judges ought to come along and change that.”
HILLARY CLINTON: “Legal Immigrant Children's Health Improvement Act of 2007,” which would lift the current waiting period of five years for federal health care benefits for immigrants.
One wants a stop to the madness, the other wants more benifits. Lets stop paying the costs for illegal immigration and we will have a lower deficit.

23. I have to agree with Mr. Lane. The sad truth of the matter is that we are once again becoming a society of the "haves and the have nots." The so called middle class is shrinking while the gap between the rich and the working poor grows wider every year. Millions of hard working Americans cannot afford to eat three meals a day or to pay the co-pays on medical care. Millions don't even HAVE medical care. We are regulating and fee charging the average American out of the ability to function. We are looking at a society which is increasingly self centered, and greedy. Business, our wonderful capitalist system, is a perfect example. Business has lost its moral compass, and needs no more encouragement or governmental breaks. Encourage them to make more jobs? Well, if the jobs paid enough to live on and provided the benefits their employees deserve, that would be a fine and worthy goal, but thats not what happens. The jobs created seldom pay a living wage, and benefits keep shriveling or are tied up in so many what ifs, wherefores, and extra costs, that they might as well be non existent in the first place. Where have the concepts of loyalty, honesty, and integrity gone? What has happened to the concept of a reasonable expectation of profit versus an egregious expectation of profit? Today, greed is the motivating factor of business. What we have is "more work for less pay," and "benefits shmenefits." Find the loophole, add in the fine print, know how to work around the rules, and if we can save a buck and increase our profits, (no matter if we already make enough to fund a small country) well thats the way Jose. Lets all pay the least we can, an cut out as many benefits as possible, or move our factories to a foreign country where we can pay even less. Lets see how high we can crank up the profit margin and pat ourselves on the back as we pad our corporate pocket books. Contrary to the current school of thought, growth, unrestricted, unchecked, and unregulated is not necessarily the best thing for our businesses, our people, or our country, and companies CAN become too large to be "the best they can be."
As for Fred Thompson, to tell you the truth, although in many ways I myself am fairly conservative voter, I have found that I am becoming increasingly more inclined toward the so called liberal school of thought. I deplore the stranglehold that the lobbyists and special interests have on our politicians, and on our society. As another person here has said, just because it is an old profession, does not mean that it is honorable, or good for us. The fact that Mr. Thompson has been involved in that activity is enough to disenchant and even scare me away from supporting him. I like him as an actor, I think he should stay in that profession.

25. This guy is an actor for Pete's sake, if this is the best me can do, God help us. And forget hailing Mr. Reagan, we are still paying for his spending and cuts to corporations.
After all you guys fold all the U.S. manufacturing companies, and the small businesses, ship the jobs overseas or to Mexico, buy everything from China and watch their troops grow. Especially as we kill and maim our current military/national guard.........we are all going to be speaking Chinese! Read your history, they are not selling us this stuff to help us, they are controlling every part of your lives. We are so arrogant as to think we have this covered.
America is gonna lose everything is they keep following dumb leaders!!!!

26. Quite frankly, I don't know why he's even bothering to run. After the Republicans' failure to repeal the enormous tax incentive to ship our jobs overseas (something the Democrats are planning to turn into a tax DISINCENTIVE), all we need is another whore for corporate America arranging no bid or improperly influenced contracts at the tax payors' expense. Cutting corporate taxes ranks right up there with one of the most blatantly distasteful campaign themes he could possible think of. Since 2000, with the spell luckily being broken in 2007, we've seen the huge deficit that Republican borrow and spend (BIG) and seen how at every chance, Republicans award the really huge contracts to insiders on a no bid basis, rather than taking competitive bids to lower their huge deficit. At this point, I think its clear to the American public that in order to salvage the nation from serious damage to our democracy and integrity during the Bush years, that the Republican Party offers virtually nothing to make average Americans' lives better.
What I love are the ever changing Republican soundbytes which all abysmally fail: "tax and spend Democrats" (with (R)'s compulsive spending spree on credit building up the largest deficit in history when they started with a Clinton budget surplus; "godless liberals" (this was big with R's after the one time triumph of Evangelism over reality. Now that we have had 7 years of lies, really BAD corruption, cronyism and sleaze - (R)'s are very aware this is a bad time to call anyone "godless"); "traitors" (this of course refers to the 72% of Americans who hate their (R) reality. Something about a mere 28% of America calling the rest of the country "traitors" fails to pass the "straight face test"); "socialists" (this one is ludicrous. It refers to our methof of government for decades which worked beautifully under Clinton. What it refers to is a CENTRIST like Hillary Clinton because she wants national healthcare and is tired of the (R)'s burdening the middle class and working poor, while letting big corporations and ultra wealthy take all their money. Isn't it time the average American got a break?)

27. What is wrong with this picture. A TV actor to run for President of the U.S. A supporter of all the things wrong with this country, and another neocom. What is his position of the war, the economy, health issues and immigration. You all are so wrapped up in his so called glamour, you aren't asking the hard questions. Are we looking for four or eight more years of the same. If you know what Thompson stands for, please let us in on the secret.

28. Protestant conservative do not think Fred Thompson doesn't come with baggage. All of the candidate do. At this point he is the only candidate (I'm really hopping he runs). I consider him the best for the job. Tax Cuts are great - they helped the job boom and the lower unemployment. To take that away will just bring back higher unemployment.
The problems Protestants have currently is that we don't protest enough. We sit by as we watch our rights be taken away and given exclusivly to other religious groups. It's illegal for a Christian to pray in public but legal for Muslim.
I say to all Protestants/Christians it's time to stand up to our rights and bring our country back to where it belongs.

29. The Democrats have nothing to offer but to blame the Republicans for everything. What have they done since they got control of the Congress. At least with Fred you know where he stands and that we will not be speaking Spanish or praying 20 times a day to the east. Hillary want to take 15% of our retirement savings to fund her social reform. I too will look at moving to another place if the Wicked Witch of the East is elected. He doesn't claim to be perfect and he won't leave a trail of blood behind him like the witch has.

30. "If you know what Thompson stands for, please let us in on the secret." - Unlike the other candidates, who are just now beginning to explain what they stand for and formulate a platform, Fred's views and positions are widely publicized. Email me and I'll be happy to provide links. Fred has a solid record of voting federalist and has been consistent in that. He is actually the easiest candidate to decipher, beause nothing is a cipher. It's very clear where he stands.
