Fred Thompson must really have the liberals worried as the mouth piece for lefties throughout the land began their attacks in earnest. This from the vile vaunted NY Times:
As the election of 2008 approaches with its cast of contenders who bring unprecedented diversity to the quest for the White House, the voting public has been called on to ponder several questions: Is America ready for a woman to be president? What about a black man? A Mormon?
Now, with the possible candidacy of Fred D. Thompson, the grandfatherly actor and former Republican senator from Tennessee, whose second wife is almost a quarter-century his junior, comes a less palatable inquiry that is spurring debate in Internet chat rooms, on cable television and on talk radio: Is America ready for a president with a trophy wife?
Aside from the fact that they attack Fred Thompson for his age, what point did it serve to go after his wife? Jeri Kehn Thompson is a wife, mother and a highly successful professional woman. That would seem to meet the criteria set forth by the womens liberation movement the NY Times continually forces down our throats. Democrats still talk with great adoration of Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis. She was the true example of a trophy wife; her husband was fooling around with anyone he could while she took care of the kids and gripped his arm at social functions; did the Times ever mention her as a "trophy wife"?
You may recall that the media was painstakingly restrained in not reporting anything about Chelsea Clinton. They, of course, couldn't wait to report about the drinking habits of the Bush twins but that's a post for another day. Jeri Thompson doesn't seem greatly involved in Thompsons campaign, she doesn't call talk shows and defend her husband from pundits like Elizabeth Edwards has done. Fred's a big boy and can take care of himself. In other words, she should be off limits, but instead she's portrayed as a bimbo for being a buxom woman.
When Bill Clinton was running for office and during his time in the White House, Hillary Clinton was portrayed as a "nineties, liberated woman" who was not only a super mom, but also was a professional in a tough, man-dominated business. They ran glowing articles about this new type of feminism. Juxtapose that with how they are already treating Jeri Thompson and tell me the Times doesn't have a liberal agenda. I suppose if Jeri were to turn $1000 into $100,000 or illegally hide files (or better yet, attempt to join Augusta National), she would be much more respected by the elitist in the Times office.

16. Spouses are important to the American public. I would say yes she is fair game just like all other spouses. However the reporting should be fair.

17. #7 BettyBB: It is amusing to read comments by those who get glee from making slanderous and degrading comments about others whom they disagree with. Of course these posters won't believe the facts or let go of those tales and that is what makes them so much fun. Fred Thompson was divorced for 15 years before he remarried and his ex-wife has not only nice things to say about him and will help him in his campaign. He present wife, unlike some of the previous gossipers previously stated was never a pole dancer or party girl or a bimbo. She is well educaded, professional woman who can certainly hold her own against any of the other candidates wives. But better to show what tales you have now before Fred enters the race so they can be put behind quickly.

18. BettyBB - Your facts about Fred are off. He didn't dump his wife for Jeri. He and his first wife divored in 1985 and he remarried in 2001. Interesting that the article doesn't mention that point. :-/

19. Thompson's wife fair game? Scott, are you for real? Mcain's daughter was fair game. Your comments about how Hillary was portrayed as a "nineties, liberated woman" is so bias it's actually laughable. How many books have been written about Hillary? The right went after her and now the left will go after Thompson's wife. You see, Scott the left wing in America has learned from the right wing in America and the left is ready to slash and dash any family member who is running from the Republican party. So, I want to thank the right wing attack machines, because the left-wing will follow suit and start to pillage their villages. The Left is saying to the right, "Bring it on"!!

20. This is 2007. Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis came from a time when woman were trained into docile, conformists. She wasn't a trophy wife - she was the american model for what American wives were supposed to be doing in that time according to social standards...Why are we asking if America is ready for an older president with a younger wife? Why are we asking if we are ready for a black, female, or any other domination president?
Are these people going to address the issues? Are these people going to REPRESENT Americans? Do these people have the capability to manage this country, and accept responsibility for their actions?
Wake up people. We have a current government getting away with "forging the truth" day after day...and we're wondering if a black man can run this country as if he wasn't born from the same pool of social connections they all derive from?

21. Just goes to prove what a lot of us already know -The Democrats are very afraid of Fred D. Thompson entering the race for President. With both of their front-runners basically un-electable, what should have been a slam-dunk for them to get a Dem. into the White House will end up proving they can screw up even a wet dream.

22. "No No dont cover the wives. Its not fair." What a bunch of wussies. It was fair when Hillary got racked over the coals. It was fair when Theresa Heinze Kerry got raked over the coals. Now you repukes want to say its off limits to critisize the wives. FU is what I have to say.
One Poster Bob Barney wrote "red Thompson is old??? He'll be 65 in August. Since when is that old? His wife is 40, hardly a teenager. JFK was 43 when he took office, his wife Jackie was 31. She was 24 when she married him, he was 36. Who's robbing the cradle?"
Hey Boborino... do the math. If he's 65 now and she's 40 and they met when he was 36 she would not be only 24 years old. Try 21. Just barely legal drinking age. And frankly its disgusting that he has a daughter the same age. That's just creepy. I dont want to but have to wonder if he demands that she scream "daddy" during relations.

23. I think Mr. Thompson's wife is off limits. Although it seems that no matter what the liberal press want to dig up dirt they find anything. I do not see the point in dragging kids and wives into the lime light, they do not reflect the Presidential Candidate and his service to this country. If this was the case, maybe instead of putting Bill or Hillary in Office, Chelsey would be more intelligent and not as niave as her parents. She's stayed out of the limelight as well as Mr. Bush's children. Stop the MUD SLINGING and just get down to the basics and the real issues..

25. The DEMOCRATS are really affraid of Thompson...all the attack dogs have been let out of their cages at the DEMOCRAT hq> I guess this means Fred is the frontrunner... the Clintons usually wait to start throwing mud....Hillary must be worried.

27. Look, if you want a hot First Lady, the only way to vote is Kucinich. Have you seen this guy's trophy wife??? Wowza.

28. I don't know, maybe we should talk about his wife. Could any of the other candidates not only get a date with a woman 25 years their junior, but marry one? I would like to think that his ability to ask her out shows confidence, he never was all that great to look at, and that he may have a better understanding of what people of my generation experience everyday. The fact that he is a father and grandfather from his previous marraige, as well as a father twice more from this one shows me a man who loves life, his wife, and his kids. Having younger children makes him a better candidate because he has more exposure to the issues that concern parents today. He has a vested interest in making this country better, not just for his generation, or those one or two behind his, but for every living generation in this country. The future, after all, is in our children. Let us talk about his wife, then we may all see someone we really can stand behind. Hooah!

29. The sad fact is that Republican politics have forced such incredible negativity that nothing is out of bounds. The incredible irony is that of the "family value" Reppublican candidates - John McCain, Newt Gingrich, Rudy Guliani, Fred Thompson, and Mitt Romney - the only one to have had only one wife - is the Mormon!!
