Things just keep getting worse for John McCain.
As his ship starts to sink, he is moving into panic mode. Recently, he ducked off the Senate Floor and went to the Senate cloakroom. With bad news about resignations coming in, he called his fund-raiser and exhorted him to raise more money. It seems he entered into a gray area. The Senate ethic rules forbid campaign activities within Senate facilities.
According to the story in the New York Times, if he solicited campaign contributions, that would be a criminal violation. The article goes on to point out that Senator McCain raised this same charge against Vice President Al Gore when he was running for president.
Nothing is going right for McCain. Opportunity knocks once and then the door closes. It is just a matter of time before he will have to bow out. I only hope he is able to do it gracefully. There was a time, I would have voted for him.

1. Senator McCain lost my respect and whatever reluctant
support I might have given his candidacy as soon as the Bi- Partisan Campaign Reform Act , a . k . a .
' McCain - Feingold ' , passed . McCain - Feingold ,
a sop to Democrats ( only forty Republican lawmakers
voted for it ) , unconstitutional , a boon to incumbents , and an idiotically labrynthine stricture on Free Speech , ought never to have passed Congress , should never have been signed by the President and should have been repudiated by the
Supreme Court . The B . C . R . A . is a sorry legacy for McCain , who in any event is almost the same age as BOB DOLE when Dole received the
G . O . P . nomination in 1 9 9 6 and lost to
President Clinton . McCain ought to have the decency , the humility and the common sense to end his campaign now . Alas , the ' Straight Schlock
Express ' answers only to his own ego .
McCain owes more to Republican voters than to
the petty tyrants of the PEW CHARITABLE TRUSTS ,
OPEN SOCIETY , and DEMOCRACY 2 1 , and their
insufferable false prophets FRED WERTHEIMER and
GEORGE SOROS . This typist hopes McCain lives
long enough to see the repeal of B . C . R . A .
In the meantime , it is sweet amusing irony that
McCain , having taken the side of campaign reform ideologues at the NEW YORK TIMES , gets himself
' outed ' for violating campaign fundraising
rules - - and by the TIMES , at that !
