After speculating whether this was 1968 all over again for the Democrats, I think we now have exhibit A. Cindy Sheehan has formally announced as an independent gunning for Nancy Pelosi's seat.
From AP:
Citing her son as inspiration, a tearful Cindy Sheehan announced her candidacy Thursday for the U.S. House of Representatives.
...Last month, she announced her intention to run against Pelosi if the speaker didn't move to impeach Bush by July 23. On Thursday, she said Pelosi had "protected the status quo" of the corporate elite and had lost touch with people in her district, most of whom, she said, want American troops out of Iraq.
...Sheehan admitted she has no funds for a campaign, but planned to immediately get started raising money. Without giving further specifics, Sheehan said she wouldn't accept money from corporations and would run on a platform of universal health care. Sheehan said she also wants to make college affordable and improve ethics in the legislative and executive branches.
So maybe now the Democrats will actually believe the conservatives and others who suggested that Cindy Sheehan is an unhinged woman trading on the goodwill of her dead son. Just who was it that fed the media reputation, who booked her on all those talk shows? Who funded her camp in Crawford? Talk about pigeons coming home to roost.
I doubt whether even one of the most liberal districts in the nation would be crazy enough to lose the speaker of the house for a leftwing nutcase, so Nancy is safe here, but it will be fun to watch.
as a professional tabloid journalist, of course, I'm obliged to hold out for a Sheehan win, that being the one that would sell more newspapers. A Pelosi battered and reeling from 17 months in the ring with an unhinged but quite determined ditch-dweller would be an acceptable second. Have to say, though, while Sheehan has picked a race in a district where she could conceivably pull it off, I'm disappointed she didn't go where she could do the most damage, I mean bring the most attention to her cause ... plenty of do-nothing hypocrites in the Democratic 2008 field, too, Cindy!

2. Nix sees the bigger picture: the anti war left turning against the party they put in power last November, who haven't come through for them.

3. Nancy Pelosi doesn't know what she is doing, not fit for the job, if it wasn't for reid and Hoyer people would have seen right through her before. Pelosi is in way over her head. Sheehan is off her rocker, they used her, got all the propaganda against Bush they wanted, she is not fit for any job, and like pelosi. Cindy, Hillary isn't intelligent or capable of being president, terroists love all three of them

4. Cindy Sheehan might be "unhinged" (no wonder), but her platform is right on. Impeaching Bush, and maybe Cheney as well might be one of the most important things that could happen in order to protect our way of life. The power grabbing tactics of this administration, if not SERIOUSLY challenged, would pass on to the next Executive branches, in addition to being a catastrophe now. Study the Con-stitution, folks, and demand the checks and balances it advocates. Congress needs to wake up and do more than simply win the next election.

5. I have another thought: Even though I like Nancy Pelosi,I wonder if the reason she is against impeach-ing Bush and Cheney is that if they were actually ousted, she would have to take over as Chief Execu-tive. ????? Maybe that is too scary for her????

7. Good for her. I hope she at least creates some nervousness for Pelosi and any other candidates. Right wing naysayers beware!

8. It continues to amaze me when I see the right wing chickenhawks and their want-a-be's implying that Cindy Sheehan has no creditability concerning the Iraqi war. Like cattle, they continue to back this administration's reason's for sending our young people in harm's way for political reasons. Those who fail to understand what it is like to lose a loved-one in war are truly lost. If only Pelosi and the other democrats had Ms. Sheehan's bravery...

10. I, too, am sorry for Cindy Sheehan's loss. Any Mother would be and I suspect this is because the loss of a child is overwhelming. However, Ms. Sheehan needs to tak a considered, reflective, and careful look at her action of running against the first woman speaker of the house. Senator Pelosi has "paid her dues" and she performs admirably in her new role. Please back off, behave rationally.

11. King George and the puppeteer-in-chief Dicky Cheney have killed more people than the terrorists on 9/11, and injured thousands more. It is for sure that none of the amnistration will become unhinged over the loss of their children in the insanity of Iraq - they are safely enjoying the life of ease and security the corporations that own our government have bought them. God bless you, Cindy!

12. Talk about nonsense. The author thinks that Pelosi and Co. funded Cindy? A joke folks. She was funded by rational Americans who knew this invasion/occupation stuff never should have happened in the first place. Somebody else is afraid we'll lose the first Female Speaker of the House?! Her first act was to take impeachment "off the table". Now that's a true capitulating p***y. Dump her. She got manhandled when she tried to put Murtha in. Truth is the good ole boys still run the show - Republicans or Dems, no diff except lip service. The status quo is where they want it.

13. this administration has done more than enough lieing to the public, torture, Nothing done for New Orleans, where is all the money 2.3 Trillion Missing Sept 10, according to Rummy. * billion sent to Iraq on pallets, 190,000 guns dissappear. 911 and who did it??? No concern for our people, or our environment. Only concern for the richest 1% of the people on the planet and how to give them more tax breaks. Take away our Social Security and everything FDR did for the people. Using terror to scare the people into war and more war. This list should go on for 5 pages. Incompetence and Pelosi does nothing. She is either intimidated or has joined them. sharon

14. I think we out here are wondering how our public leaders have been intimidated?>?? We know that at least Sheehan is a new face and she has proved she is not afraid. We would also like to see a more acurate account of our History. History should not be repeated. BRING OUR Outsourced JOBS BACK HOME, they were on the way out when Bush took over, and did he really win the election??? If so which one???I hope Cindy Sheehan can help our country out.
