It's been fun pointing out the signposts that mark the way to John McCain's withdrawal from the presidential race. Here's another one, a Rasmussen poll for Arizona:
Arizona is the home state for John McCain, but Fred Thompson is the strongest GOP Presidential candidate in the state at this time.
A Rasmussen Reports telephone survey found that Thompson leads Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton by seventeen percentage points, 51% to 34%. Thompson will be formally announcing his candidacy this week.
McCain's edge over Hillary Clinton was 46% to 36%. Which means that John McCain lost 5 points against Fred Thompson in his home state. Clearly John McCain is very much over. I am now intensely interested in the 3rd quarter fundraising numbers for the McCain campaign.
In other Rasmussen polling, Ohio is a complete tossup. Clinton is leading in Florida and Missouri matchups, but showing surprising weakness in Oregon. They love Rudy Giuliani in Colorado. But New York looks very, very bad for Rudy.
Of these the most interesting to me is New York where Rudy matches up to Hillary at 33% to her 58%. This is quite a bit of trouble for a campaign whose main argument is that they can take the fight to places where Republicans can't fight anymore and knock Hillary off balance. the Pennsylvania numbers don't look especially great either.
It's all about winning. If running a New York social liberal doesn't get the GOP any closer to winning than a southern conservative, best to run with the guy that you actually believe in.

1. Please remember NY is the Bluest of Blue states. However what New Yorkers say in public and what they do in private is two different things. They all were against Rudy going into his re-election, he won in a landslide.
They say the PC line in public, but like the fact that they can go the Theater and not have to worry about their safety.

2. Lets go Hillary you go girl You are going to be the next President of the U.S. of America. It is about time that a woman is elected. She is a very smart female and would do a fantastic job.

3. John McCain has military support. To bad that service men and women are to busy to comment on McCain.
John please tell your loyal supporters if you decide not to run. That will change my thinking.
Hillary looks like a wreck. Fred Thompson looks like he is in poor health. A complete health check should be part of the campagin process. GW does look healthy I will give him that much.

4. The Clintons are both the same. They can cheat and lie but the press will cover it up before it gets too bad. Hillary is just using her dumb husband to get to the top. What will happen if she does make it to the top? God help this great country.

5. Hillary looks great. Her negatives are one by one falling - her positives are moving up. She has the experience, works both sides of the aisle, has made hard choices - why is she a "wreck"? She's got a well oiled machine - best advisors - money up the wazoo, has already met half the worlds leaders she'd be dealing with, understands needs of not only single mothers, but for men and if she has a plan to re-train workers being laid off from good jobs and now back in "Bush's" "Economic Expansion" without bene's or decent pay, she's got my vote. Will she bilk American's of well paying jobs while speaking from the other side of her mouth and congratulate herself on how well Corporations are doing each quarter? She was one of the first who demanded Bush extend unemployment benefits 6 more months. Tell my kids that didn't help us out when we needed it most. Commander in Chief? Name a general who'd give Hillary flak? Name a Foreign Leader who wouldn't be put in place and look forward to the trip. Think she'll bow down to Sunni's and Shiite's in the Middle East? Can't see that myself. The "negatives" are what with men would be positives. We are such an ugly people. "Oh, sure women can do it-oops! but, we better not let them!"~chuckle chuckle. Merkle and Thatcher haven't/didn't do so bad - did they? No, only America can be so wishy-washy hiding stereotypes with "witty" banter. I don't need to parse over Bills and Laws passed - her record is longer than McCain's and how long has he been in there? Motivated on day one. Hope she cleans everyone's clocks.

6. Rudy winning mayor of New York City is one thing, and to do so he was a liberal Republican. Winning New York (the state) over a Democrat will be a stretch. Rudy is still a Republican (if in name only). And Democrats still rule the state legislature and now have a Dem governor again.
As to Thompson, I get the feeling his heart is not in this at all. The guy looks awful (he is 65? he looks older to me). Rumor has it it was his wife that convinced him to run - maybe she wants to be first lady.
