So why does it matter for the GOP? The Politico explains the obvious:
Yes, the fastest-growing segment (legal, mind you) of the American voting population is not happy with the Republican party. All of George W. Bush's hard work at making in-roads to a constituency that the GOP needs, if it will ever win the White House again, has been squandered.
Republican and Democratic strategists agree that in order to win the White House, the presidential candidate must receive at least 40 percent of the Hispanic vote. Hispanics are expected to make up 10 percent of the total vote in 2008.
GOP candidates seem to be following the conclusion of its conservative base that the party cannot win over the Hispanic vote, Rosenberg [Dan, president of NDN] said. "I think we will look back on this time and it will be seen as one of the greatest strategic blunders in American history," he added.

16. Beautiful! The one thing that W got completely right was wooing the Hispanic vote, and that is in the toilet, now. Amazing! Every time that I think my (former, now I am independent) party gets its "stuff" together, they act like the Democrats.
Absolutely Amazing!
Sincerely,
F. Long

17. I am not Hispanic but I can see that the Republicans are making the effort and succeeding at turning hard working Mexican immigrants into villains. We are all for securing the border but the Hispanic bashing is ridiculous. I know three Mexican immigrants (you call them illegal) that have died in Iraq fighting for the USA. I don't recall anyone writing about them. My boyfriend's dad helped build the railroads in this country during World War 2 when he was brought here from Mexico as part of the Brazero program. I have not heard of one Mexican coming here wanting to blow us up. Look in the kitchens of the restaurants you eat in and at the crews that are cleaning up New Orleans and rebuilding that city. They are predominantly Hispanic. So stop the racist comments and rhetoric. It is racist. Sorry but even a blonde haired blue eyed woman with southern roots like me sees it.

20. the american government was born out of rascism, used rascist tactics to gain power over anyone and everyone. lets not forget people lived here on this land way before "columbus discovered" it, or got lost on his way to india. thats a conveniant forgotten fact. genocide = strong arm military, forced fed foreign religion i.e. christianity, classist values, diseases, alcohol...all brought to you by yes "the american government" all fat power hungry gluttony driven white men from prestigous families with common ideas of royalty.
so when i think of the government and presidential candidates and so many citizens opposed to immigration and "sub-standard schools" becuase of illegals, i think how lucky we all are, to have ancestors that lived and suffered so that we may complain about what language 'they' have the nerve to make 2nd, civil rights causes that almost always leave out every ethnicity besides black. forget that 'they' "borrow" given land and use it as nuclear waste dumps HERE, its going on now, so when all you people get to sit and complain at your computer just as i have now, remember how you got here, who benefited from the long line of deception double talking deal making less than 100yrs ago. and whos still gonna benefit. so booohoo, get over it vote and carry on. opinions are one thing, taking action for what is true is NOT part of the american way. PS history books don't tell you this, but this land was occupied with tribes and mexica/ mexicans, for centurys before....their blood is what allows thousands to see Ellis Island, the european immigration, as what is known as the american dream.
someone likened La Raza to the kkk...but i dont think any member of la raza would ever burn a cross on someones lawn buddy, thats a white thing, a hateful comment made only by legal white patriotic flag waving proud to be american illiterate having babys with their daughters land raping breed of what time has mutated by way of american history. yep.
i am mexican by colonization, mexica origin, traditional ways spiritually, but i am american by birth right. nothing more than that. and nothing less. VOTE FOR ME - couldnt do any worse than G-dub

22. IF I LIVED IN ANOTHER COUNTRY AND BECAME A CITIZEN I WOULD BE PROUD TO LEARN AND UNDERSTAND THE LANGUAGE OF THAT COUNTRY, NOW MY OWN. I WOULD BE INSULTED IF THE PEOPLE RUNNING FOR THE HIGHEST OFFICE OF THAT LAND INSULTED ME BY ASSUMING I DIDNT UNDERSTAND OR COULDNT SPEAK THE NATIVE TONGUE I STRUGGLED TO LEARN. I WOULD FEEL LIKE THEY WERE SEPARATING ME FROM THE NATIVE BORN.

23. When shall we think as Americans and quit this racist block thinking? I do not think Baraka Obama is a racist just because the registration stated above have not been amended. Anyone wishing to have such amendments should seek advice on how to sponsor legislation changes and look for the necessary signatures and support to carry the review through to the state senate. Secondly could we respect democracy and accept that uniform voting is not necessarily democratic but brainwashing? Where is the individual and where are the interests of the nation?
On migrants:
We must evaluate migrants and when we do, we shall find that they are gifts to a nation that could contribute wonderfully. Ask yourself how much the migrants nation(where they came from) chipped in to bring up that imigrant and you will see what they earn here may never be given back to the society that brought them up. Irrespective respecting the law should be the game.

24. I THINK WE NEED TO GO BACK TO THE WAY THINGS WERE.ONLY ALLOW IMMIGRANTS TO ENTER THE US EITHER ON A WORK PERMIT OR A GREENCARD.AND MAKE THEM PAY TAXES LIKE THE REST OF US.SECURE THE BORDERS, AND THE ONES WHO DON'T HAVE GREENCARDS, OR WORK PERMITS SEND THEM PACKING.AND SECURE THE BORDERS FOR THE ILLEGAL ONES WHO ARE TRYING TO SLIP THROUGH ILLEGALY.IF THEY SLIP THROUGH AND ARE CAUGHT, SEND THEM TO PRISON.THEY NEED TO BE TREATED WITH FAIRNESS, BUT ALSO MUST FOLLOW OUR LAWS, JUST LIKE WE DO.

26. RX,,
Wrong. My kid's school was at least 50% illegal. I was the PTA President. It is the inner city ghetto school. And believe me, all Moms who are involved in their kids education know the finances of the schools, and how major programs have to be dropped because of the new comers. It is seriously impacting our children's education.
Two, my kid came down with TB caught from an illegal at school. The public health department said there was no TB in the area before the illegal invasion and now it is endemic. Parents get you kids tested for TB as often as your doctor will allow, not just once a year.

Nope, La Raza does not burn crosses. They did urinate on the USA flag and burn it, and hung the USA flag upside down, and below that of the Mexican flag.
In terms of violence, the only that I know of is yelling racial insults at non-Latino Americans and spitting on them. And telling Americans that they were going to take over and kick Americans out. That's pretty racist.
However, it is interesting that there has been violence at many of the pro rule of law, anti illegal rallys, by the lawless illegal supporters. In New Jersey, prior to the rally, someone tried to intimidate the organizer threatening violence and the police got involved. At the rally someone tried to steal the microphones etc and got caught. When the organizer and his wife got out of their car, about 10 men started to beat them up. The police arrested them.
In Seattle, again the pro rule of law folks were attacked by the lawless illegal supporters who wore black masks and shields. The police intervened and arrested the lawless ones.
In LA the Black community received a permit for a pro rule of law rally. The lawless illegal supporters again caused trouble, blocking the route. The police asked the Black group to back down (they did not want to) I presume because the Black group was a law abiding group, whereas the lawless crowd just wanted to create trouble.
Now there is a rally being planned in the midwest, and again there seems to be problems with intinmidation. The organizer there might have to end up going to the ACLU in order to assert the people's right to free speech.
There seems to be a pattern here, but who knows if it is coordinated. Over many years, I have been involved in, or observed many marches, and with the exception of one neo nazi march, never seen the other side to the issue interfere.
It is somewhat worring that we have this happening. We cherish our right to free speech, but obviously there are now people out there who either have no idea how free speech works, or do not have American values. They are acting like a bunch of thugs.

People keep talking about how everyone is making racist remarks about Hispanics. I have not heard, read or listened to one single such remark.
If what they mean is that people who are pro rule of law, and want our country to stick to legal immigration, with the illegals being sent back home, that is not racist at all.
Nor is it racist to enforce our laws. Mexico enforces theirs and it is much harsher than ours.
Hispanics may not like it, but the fact is there are lot of people here illegally, that is a crime ( 8 USC 1325 - Rudy got it wrong ), and it is entirely unfair and racist to let them stay when the legals are waiting to get in.
America is made up of immigrants, from all over the world. All new immigrants should come from all over the world, not just Latin America. We all have families and friends we want to have come to America, and every American's right is a good as any other American. Therefore to let in 8 million Hispanics without letting in 8 million Africans, 8 million Asians, 8 million Indians, 8 million Europeans, etc is racist, and is against the equality under the law clause of our constitution.
What we need are tough enforcement of our laws, so illegals self deport. We bring in legal immigrants if we need additional labor. Paul Samuelson the economist has pointed out it is an economic diaster to bring in just unskilled and low skilled workers. They do not produce wealth. What you need are the engineers, doctors, scientists etc who put more into the economy than they take out. Then you can bring in some uneducated immigrants, and have a proper economic balance.
Right now each illegal is being subsidized by the taxpayer to the tune of $22,000 per year, and that is after their economic benefit to society has been added. They are a net loss. If all 12 million were given amnesty, in 20 years, the taxpayers will owe 2.5 trillion dollars in unfunded entitlements for the 12 million illegals alone. Do you want to triple your taxes right now?
Its real easy to be nice and say oh, let everyone come in, what is the problem. The problem is we are going bankrupt due to the cost of the illegals, and it would only get worse if we give amnesty.
South Korea has predicted that the USA will be, in 30 years, a third world country because of the illegal immigration, and its effect of destroying our ability to pay for and maintain our infrastruture. It is already happenend with collapased bridges, terrible road, terrible schools etc. California speand 10.5 billion a year on illgals - think what that could be used for. And some of our population are adopting a third world mentality, ie the rule of law does not apply, do what ever you want, use political arm twisting and any sort of pressure you can, to get what you want, even it is against the law. That is why third world governments fail, and people flee from those countries. Now we have that disease here. We need to get back to being a society of laws.

30. Carlos, #14, Muchas gracias para su declaracion appropiada!
My daughter Caridad is Cuban/American, not illegal, nor was her dad. Alot of neocons lump certain ethnicities into stereotypical groupings.
my daughter is 30, quite old enough to have her own mind. She has a Masters in World Religions and now she is a screenwriter. She speaks Spanish, as well as , English. She votes Democrat. Her reasons are due to blatant racism by the GOP,(not just Hispanics), anti-feminist, anti-abortion, anti-free speech, now guaranteed rights being taken away by using the threat of terrorists, pro-war, pro-elitism,pro every darn thing that insults any human being with decency and empathy.
If you know not what you speak then shhhhhhhhhh!
