The latest Harris poll shows Fred Thompson leading Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton leading Barack Obama:
... One-third (32%) of those who say they will vote in a Republican primary or caucus will vote for Thompson while 28 percent will vote for Giuliani. Much further back is John McCain, who continues his downward slide with 11 percent saying they would vote for the Arizona Senator, and 9 percent who say they would vote for former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
... Just under half (46%) of those who would vote in a Democratic primary or caucus would vote for the former First Lady while one-quarter (25%) would vote for Illinois Senator Barack Obama. Former vice president candidate and North Carolina Senator John Edwards is further back with 14 percent saying they would vote for him. No other candidate is in double digits.
The only really surprising thing in this poll is that young Democrats will vote for Obama while the older (61 and over) favor Hillary overwhelmingly. A return to the Al Gore, Sr. Dixiecrat roots perhaps?
The Thompson lead is to be expected as he is the "new" candidate. His performance in the debates will be extremely important, should he falter, Rudy will grab this race and run with it setting up the election we were robbed of back in 2000 when Rudy had to bow out because of cancer and Hillary ran against lightweight Rick Lazio.
These are good, strong numbers for Thompson and he should take heart, however they could change dramatically should he not make a good showing. I suspect he'll do fine but also that Giuliani will get a small bump be his brouhaha with MoveOn.org so things should even out. Mitt Romney and John McCain are toast at this point and only can be saved by a complete upset in the early primary states.
On the donk side, John Edwards just hasn't found his stride and is hovering at 12-16% based on polling. He stands no chance of advancing if he hasn't grabbed the electorate by now.

1. "Mitt Romney and John McCain are toast"? Mitt Romney's campaign is focused on early primary states, most of all of which he is leading. Once Romney launches his national campaign, you are going to see a very different scenario. Romney is managing his campaign like the successful business man he is...this is why Romney will win the Republican nomination, subsequent Presidential election.

2. If Hillary wins the Democratic nomination, the Dems are in trouble. Hillary is too polarizing and stands weak. Unfortunately, she may get it. So in that case I may be forced to vote for a Republican so I hope Ron Paul gets it, but that is unlikely. Damn! I am also a Dolphin fan too. This year just sucks so far.

3.
While there has been a fair amount of movement in the polls on the Republican side, Hillary seems to just move further out ahead.
I agree that Hillary is polarizing and has high negative numbers. She does, however have the advantage of already being put through the fires.
The "Bad" news about her is already out there. We are not going to learn all that much new about her. Giuliani and Thompson both still have closets that have yet to be opened. So you knows.....
As a Democrat - leaning voter, I sure wish MoveOn.org would stop "Helping" the Democrats so much. Their intention might be to get Democratic party elected, but some of the time I think they do more harm than good.www.urbaninsuranceagency.comhttp://urbannewsblog.blogspot.com

5. Hilary's been through the fires? Yeah and is now burnt to a crisp. Dems wake up. If she gets the nomination we're through. Obama is my candidate. Yeah he's young, but at least he is strong enough to defend himself and look good doing it. Hilary just can't charm people, and unfortunately that's huge...

6. Romney is far from "toast". He is leading in Iowa, New Hampshire, Michigan, Nevada, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah and is gaining momentum in South Carolina, Florida and California and Arizona. You need to do your homework. Mitt will capture the nomination.

9. Scott...you are so right. You only need to research Romney and his accomplishments to see what a great President he will be. I have had the pleasure of meeting him twice; he is truly passionate about this country and very impressive as a person.
