Former Republican presidential candidate Gary Bauer contends that conservative Christians should seriously consider supporting Thompson if they want to avoid a "nightmare scenario" where they are forced to choose between two pro-abortion, pro-gay rights candidates – Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani.
"He (Thompson)'s obviously against same-sex marriage. He doesn't support quite the same constitutional amendment that some of the others of us do, but he's been talking with us about it, and has been moving closer and closer on the amendment," said Bauer, who is president of American Values, according to OneNewsNow.
"So I hope that we can, as a movement, be very wise about this, and not savage candidates that we may very well have to support in 2008 if they're running against Hillary Clinton."
As I suspected, Fred Thompson has not suffered at all from Dobson's attack, and indeed the collective blogosphere opinion was to think even more highly of Thompson. And with this latest defense it appears that Thompson can get the support of both the religious right and the libertarian elements of the GOP. It's the best of both worlds!
Gary Bauer gave a good sharp head slap to the religious right, saying, in effect, "Do you want to see Hillary as president?! Pull yourself together!"
Mike Huckabee is the religious right dream candidate, he's been religiously (ha! religiously, get it?) going after the support of conservative Christians and is largely succeeding. But in the bigger electoral game, he's been coming up short. Of all the second tier candidates, I believe Mike has the best shot at breaking out, but with Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani, and now Thompson in the way, it seems like a long shot indeed.
In the end, Fred Thompson can and will easily get the support of the religious right, Dobson grumbling notwithstanding.

1. While I believe Fred Thompson is the best of the candidates the Republicans have to date, I further believe the best way for our party to garner even more support from our party base is for Newt Gingrich to jump in as running mate for Fred Thompson. It wouldn't even matter which of the two were President, as Newt brings the family value card in spades! Also, Newt is the only one warning the conservatives about becoming too liberal, as a means to get re-elected. We "Reagan" conservatives are going to demand our party gets back on track..... Oh, by the way, start being vocal for our party.... Imagine the ramifications of Clinton in the white house!

2. What principles can republicans pretend to run on, family values the democrats will show a picture of Craig or Foley, corruption Stevens and Cunningham, or how about terrorism the democrats will remind everyone that Osama is not caught. Lets see the notion that republicans are fiscally conservative is a punch line for late night comedians. How about competance in foriegn affairs, no just show pictures of Bush and dead students at the hands of illegals. Please tell me what pretense the republicans will use to demonstrate that the republican brand is not horribly broken with memories of Abu Garib, Blackwater, secret prisons, wiretapping, WMD's and Iraq and Katrina. Republicans can't even build a fence that works on the border. What fairey tail have you been chasing to suggest that republicans can win the white house without the help of the supreme court - again.

3. Look you all crazy Thomsons and Gingrich admirer,to tell you all the real truth there's no way these two can defeat any democratic candidate, neither Giuliani nor McCain either. The Democrats are baiting these candidates so Hilliary can have a nice meal. The only cadidate can defeat Hilliary is Mitt Romney because he's got what a presidential candidate ought to have to be a greatest leader for America and for the world.Mitt Romney is knowledgeable and understand how to deal with many problems we face as a country domestically and internationally.Mitt Romney is the only candidate running for President with a proven record of leadership and has been successful in all of his dealings. We need to be wisen up and stop the jealousy and anti whatever kind you construct in your little corner of the world. This is about the real problem facing America in the future and will affect our childrens, grandchildrens and future genertion and as Mitt Romney puts it we need to PUT OUR HOUSE IN ORDER.Another very important thing Mitt Romney brings is his strength as a leader and I'm talking about not only his educational and practical expertise and skills but his INNERSELF as a very FAITHFULL candidate to his wife, family, church and to all his dealings with his fellowmen. As a nation we cannot afford to look the other way while the answer to our prayers and hope as well as solution to problems we face as the nation is right infront of our very eyes in Mitt Romney. In these difficult times and problems we face as families and individual citizens as Americans heroic, fame and celebrity is not the solution nor the answer they are only predictable disasters. We need Mitt Romney my fellow Americans we really need him and that is the right answer.

4. Oh, geez, when Gary Bauer speaks, let's all bow down. Who cares what this guy says? How is he any more credible or different than James Dobson?
Bauer ran for president indeed...and he was kicked to the curb by his own party fairly quickly, as I recall. He is a very minor player in the GOP...
The heyday of the religious right is over..Falwell is gone, Dobson and Pat Robertson are old, and reasonable people in this country have had enough of these snake oil salesmen and their moralizing and condemnation...

6. I love the fact that all of the liberal democrats are afraid of Thompson. They prove they are afraid by attacking him all of the time. The even funnier part of it is that they have nothing REAL to attack him on. I can already hear the Hillary people demanding a recount and not understanding why she lost the election to some good ole boy from the GOP. Get used to saying,"President Thompson." I love it

7. The prior poster is dead on. The candidate that is going to win this election is the one that realizes that Dems have been leaving their party in hordes (Dem party has not ended Iraq, and has supported illegals), and that Republicans have been leaving their party in hordes(anti iraq, anti big gov, big spending, anti torture, illegal wiretapping etc).
Shelve the religious issues, they belong in church not governement (gay marriage, abortion, stem cell etc), stand firm on deporting or causing self deporation of illegals, promise to get us out of iraq fast, promise fiscal responsiblity and competent government(decimated by bush), and you have a winner.
No way Hilliary will do this. Will Mitt? or Fred? Let us see who is smartest and can build the largest coalition. If the radical right throws a tandrum, Repubs lose it.

8. "The folks who gave us the Willie Horton ads, the Swift boat campaign, the purges of black voters in Florida and endless other dirty electoral tricks are at it again. Like crack addicts confronting the irresistible vial, the evil geniuses of the G.O.P. can't seem to help themselves. This time -- with an eye toward seizing the White House again next year, even if they lose the popular vote -- they're trying to rewrite the rules for the distribution of electoral votes in California…
"Under current law, all of California's 55 electoral votes go to the presidential candidate who wins the popular vote statewide. This ''winner take all'' system is the norm in the U.S. It's in place in all but two states, Maine and Nebraska, which have just four and five electoral votes, respectively. Now comes a move, from lawyers with close ties to the Republican Party, to scrap the current system in California and replace it with one that would divide up the electoral votes in a way that would likely give 20 or more of them to the candidate who loses the popular vote in the state…Under this new proposal, the 20 or more electoral votes that would be denied the winner of the statewide vote in California could well be enough to hand the White House to a Republican candidate who loses the popular vote nationally…
"…The effort to change the way Californians vote for president has been cloaked in the typically deceptive garb that the G.O.P. pulls out for its underhanded maneuvering. The proposal has been dubbed the ''Presidential Election Reform Act.'' It is being led by Thomas Hiltachk of Bell, McAndrews and Hiltachk, a law firm that has represented both the state Republican Party and G.O.P. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. According to The Associated Press, the firm was also linked to a political committee, largely funded by Bob Perry, that targeted Democratic candidates in 2006. Mr. Perry, a longtime supporter of George W. Bush, contributed millions of dollars to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, whose intense and deceptive campaign in 2004 was so damaging to the candidacy of John Kerry. This crowd is no more interested in genuine electoral reform than Britney Spears is."

9. Newt, who told his wife, as she lay in a hospital bed stricken with cancer, that he was divorcing her, "brings the family value card in spades?" What delusion!

10. Yesteday I attend Mitt Romneys Townhall meeting in California,on my left sat next to me was a very intelligent looking guy of Asian descent. We introduce ourselves to each other with my wife sat next on my right.I'm an Independent and my friend is Democrat and we both marvel at the fact we came to meet and see our future President of the Republican Party(GOP).The crowd of roughly two thousands were on their feet cheering and clapping as the Governor enter the the room.Mitt Romney spoke with much excitement and authoritative appearance and more importantly his view on major issues of our days such as education, healthcare, immigration, social security, borders, homeland security, taxes, family values, war on terror and many improtant topics that Romney touched on yesterday. The crowd took pictures of the Governor as he shooks hands with a lot of people and I sense a feeling of hope and enthusiasm among the crowds and if I can describe their emotion and smiles in their faces in few words as the Governor was about to headed for the exit door is this,"you're our choice for President".It was a powerul feeling that people have felt while Mitt Romney was speaking.

13. Mike Huckabee is strong on some points but he flip flops very frequently. His fluctuation of views will be the biggest obstacle in his way of success. Before Huckabee stands for Tax cuts and after some time Huckabee says Taxes are fine.
