John Edwards got himself in some hot water yesterday, although I'd be shocked if you read it in tomorrow's paper:
"We cannot build enough prisons to solve this problem. And the idea that we can keep incarcerating and keep incarcerating - pretty soon we're not going to have a young African-American male population in America. They're all going to be in prison or dead. One of the two."
Now imagine if Fred Thompson or Mitt Romney had said something akin to that.
NRO makes it clear that the African-American community is not all Bloods/Crips, Kanye West/50-Cent and Glock/Mac-10 but is a community that is sending their children to college and making great inroads. Of course we have inner city violence and that is more of a cultural issue hat must be addressed but Edwards made a huge mistake here, even more than the mistake the prominent GOP candidates made by not attending the debate last night.
Edwards sounds a bit Dixiecratish. For those who think the GOP is the party of racists, do yourself a favor and read of current Senator Robert Byrd's KKK Kleagle days or the fact that Al Gore's father was anti-civil rights. Educate yourself on where the parties history on racism lies.

17. The Democrats better wake up and cease trying to ignore Edwards in favor of Hillary/Obama. If they had picked Edwards four years ago instead of Kerry, the democrats would be in the White House. Here is an idea for the Dems....more away from the liberal side of the fence and watch how you start winning elections by a landslide.

18. Are ya'll not ashamed?!? Dixiecrat? Are you implying that Southern society is just a little bit less than the greater whole - a subexistence? Isn't that label just slightly prejudicial by itself? Have you considered that Sen. Edward's comments are an attempt to address a very real problem that exists among young disadvantaged kids/young adults of any race/nationality in this country. Have you looked around to see what happens with kids who grow up in the juvenile court system. They lack the skills and social skills necessary to function in society. They lose touch and are basically abandoned by their families. They have a tough time getting a job, let alone an education. Most prisoners end up back in prison just because they couldn't get a job on the outside. No one wants to hire them. They can't have a home because they can't work. It's a downhill spiral. Most states deny parolees basic Civil Rights. In prison, do inmates have the opportunity to study or learn skills? If they do have the opportunity to learn what mechanism exists to help these people integrate back in society. Is it fair to rely solely on charitable organizations? The system is failing. Sen. Edward's concerns are valid and I'm certain he meant to address a problem affecting everyone.

19. Edwards is talking more about the institutionalized racism that is in out justice system especially pretaining to the War on Drugs, than he is being anything close to a Dixiecrat. Some people just see what they want no matter what the text actually says...

21. Edwards a Dixiecrat? Give me a break. He's just another left wing extremist Democrap. The Dixiecrats were the last true conservatives, before the Democrat party was hijacked by the communists. As for the Republicans, they're just a bunch of politicians pretending to be on the side of we real conservatives. As soon as we look the other way they're almost as bad as the Democrats. Just look at what Bush is doing about the mexican invasion and our porous borders.....nothing. Of course the Democrats are all for selling us out too. Too bad there aren't any more Dixiecrats in office. We could use them now.

23. John Edwards and Mitt Romney are the best that their parties have to offer. Both are decent, honorable men who are intelligent, hard working, and honest and either would make a good leader of our country and might possibly restore some respect for Americans as a whole.

24. Scott, you must remember that in the time of the Civil War (1860's) Democrats were the conservatives. Democrats at the time supported state's rights over federal intervention. Republicans at the time supported less state's rights. That is the opposite today, as Republicans are more state's rights than the Democrats.
@Alan Srout
Thompson is a moron. When questioned at a fundraiser, he just said "I don't know, I haven't been in politics for a while" to almost all the questions. If he believes he could run this country, he must know what to do. The only reason people like him is for his image, but in the end he has no leadership skills like Giuliani does.

26. Hi: gt
We are no longer colored; that was a term that the southern Whites used. We are now Black or African American.
