David Archuleta's dad loses 'American Idol' backstage pass

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Backstage meddling has caught up "American Idol" favorite David Archuleta's dad, who's been banned from rehearsals, a person working for the TV talent contest said Friday.

Jeff Archuleta was told this week by producers that he can no longer join 17-year-old son as David as he prepares for the show, the person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. The person wasn't authorized to comment publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The show's action was first reported Friday by the online Web site TMZ.

David Archuleta of Murray, Utah, is one of three contestants left as the top-rated Fox show heads toward the Jan. 20-21 finale. The fresh-faced teenager with the big voice has consistently been deemed a front-runner by the judges and been a consistent fan favorite.

Jeff Archuleta's intense backstage involvement had become a source of concern for the series, the person connected with "American Idol" said - but it was a lyric change on Tuesday's show that pushed producers to act.

Despite a warning, Jeff Archuleta insisted on altering "Stand by Me," one of two songs his son sang on the show Tuesday. By adding a verse from Sean Kingston's "Beautiful Girls," the father incurred additional costs for "American Idol," the person said.

Fox declined comment. Attempts to reach Jeff Archuleta for comment were unsuccessful. A phone number listed under his name in Murray, Utah, was no longer in service, and Fox did not immediately respond to a request Friday evening for help in contacting the family.

Earlier Friday, David Archuleta was honored at a hometown celebration held at his high school in Murray, during which Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman declared "David Archuleta Day."

The singer and his family declined to be interviewed at the event, but David Archuleta did speak with the Salt Lake City Fox affiliate, KSTU-TV. "Wow," he exclaimed as he viewed the cheerleading squad outside his stretch limousine.

The other finalists left in competition for the "Idol" title and a record contract are David Cook and Syesha Mercado. Cook, a native of suburban Blue Springs, Mo., had his own homecoming celebration Friday in Kansas City, while Mercado was feted Bradenton, Fla.

I was wondering why David A appears as if he is going to break out into a series of dramatic sobbing upon completion of a song. Now, thanks to RAND, I now know why. Thanks for being so observant. It has become a kind of game when the family and friends get together to watch the show: all watching break into David A impersonations and award a CRYING TOWEL to the one who does the best impersonation. So far, CALEB N. IS THE WINNER OF THE DAVID A. CRYING MARATHON IMPERSONATION CONTEST. IT HAS BEEN A FUN SEASON....................I think the nation will cry when its over. That reminds me of a Ray Charles song, "Oh,...when its crying time again, I'm going to miss you....."

David A. seems popular, but get real...it's not Jeff Archuleta TV, is it ??? With
class-A Jerk genes like Jeff's, David doesn't have a chance in life...so sad.

AOL needs to be held accoutable for these false stories. Idol has put out a story denouncing this accusation saying they have had no problems with Mr Archuleta.
There is a rule that says when the competition reaches the semi finals no parent shall be allowed back stage. This is not a new law and I think AOL should retract this statement. Idol says they usually dont comment on rumors but this could have an effect on some peoples voting, which is just rediculous. Let these kids sing and stop worry about the rest.

The Archuletas have been scamming everyone since this whole thing started. I don't buy for one second that innocent, "I've never done this before..." crap from David, and obviously, when he changed the lyrics to that song, he's in cahoots with his father to do whatever they want, rules or not. The voters should make sure he's booted this week.

I'm surprised Jeff A hasn't been banned before this. He pulled some stuff when David was on antoher talent competiton...they banned him to a sound proof room or something like that!

Since David A is a minor...who is acting as his guardian while he's statyin in the house....does the show provide one???

I think both Davids will be the finalists. David A. is very good and I wish him well but he is going to have a rough life unless he moves out on his own and becomes of age to where he can set up his own fianancial package that his dad cannot touch. David Cook should be the winner, he has the persona a great singer should have. I like the way he will take risks and put his mark on a song. His hair and the way he dresses could improve, but this is his phase he is going thru now. The voice will just continue to be great, no matter how he dresses. And since his brother is so ill, David's acheivements right now should be a real morale booster. Also, David is from a neighboring suburb from me-I live in Lee's Summit, Missouri and David lives in Blue Springs, not very far away.

i am pulling for David Ball though because I think he is so good as a singer and David A. has a good voice and could go far if his dad would leave him alone.

PLEASE, GIVE THE KID A BREAK, HE IS 17. HOW DID ALL OF YOU MORONS SOUND WHEN YOU SANG AT 17. TERRIBLE. HIS DAD IS A COMPLETE LOON AND I HOPE THE KID DUMPS HIM AS SOON AS HE IS 18. THAT IS THE REASON HE LOOKS LIKE HE IS GOING TO CRY AFTER EVERY SONG. HIS DAD IS IN THE AUDIENCE AND HAS BRAINWASHED THE KID. I THINK ALL THREE ARE GOOD SINGERS. IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO WATCH WHO GETS VOTED OFF THIS WEEK.

YOU HANG IN THERE DAVID. MAYBE A BUS WILL HIT YOUR DAD.

Report This! I work in the entertainment field and there's not much worse than an up and coming talent whois hindered by an over zealous stage mon/dad. These people have NO clue to the workings of behind the scenes production. Time is MONEY.........BIG money and anything that interferes with that is quickly dealt with. Hey Jeff..............keep your nose out of it, or you'll end up like many others.......out in the cold.

David A. is the product of an abusive father or at least that is the way he acts!

americana15pr 02:35:04 PM May 10 2008

DAVID WILL WIN IN SPITE OF HIS MEDDLING FATHER. HE HAS MANY PEOPLE VOTING FOR HIM EVERY WEEK, SO HE WILL BE OUR NEXT AMERICAN IDOL. MISS. MERCADO IS TOO STUCK UP. COOK SHOULD LEARN HOW TO COMB HIS HAIR. SO MESSY!!!
